This warranty covers ONLY defects in material and workmanship. Sears will NOT pay for:
Expendable items that become worn during normal use, including but not limited to spark plug, air cleaner,
belts, and oil filter.
Standard maintenance servicing, oil changes, or tune-ups.
Tire replacement or repair caused by punctures from outside objects, such as nails, thorns, stumps, or glass.
Tire or wheel replacement or repair resulting from normal wear, accident, or improper operation or
maintenance.
Repairs necessary because of operator abuse, including but not limited to damage caused by over-speeding
the engine, or from impacting objects that bend the frame, auger shaft, etc.
Repairs necessary because of operator negligence, including but not limited to, electrical and mechanical
damage caused by improper storage, failure to use the proper grade and amount of engine oil, or failure to
maintain the equipment according to the instructions contained in the operator's manual.
Engine (fuel system) cleaning or repairs caused by fuel determined to be contaminated or oxidized (stale). In
general, fuel should be used within 30 days of its purchase date.
Normal deterioration and wear of the exterior finishes, or product label replacement.
This warranty applies only while this product is within the United States.
This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state.

cyclingthevalvecontrolleverfromforwardtoreverseseveral
timeswhileengineis notrunning;returningto neutralbefore
repairingor adjustingfittings,hoses,tubing,orothersystem
components.
d. Donotadjustthepressuresettingsofthepumporvalve.
10. Leakscanbe detectedbypassingcardboardorwood,while
wearingprotectiveglovesand safetyglasses,overthesuspected
area.Lookfordiscolorationofcardboardorwood.
11. Ifinjuredbyescapingfluid,seea doctorimmediately.Serious
infectionor reactioncandevelopifpropermedicaltreatmentisnot
administeredimmediately.
12. Keeptheoperatorzoneandadjacentareaclearforsafe,secure
footing.
13. Ifyourmachineisequippedwithaninternalcombustionengine
and isintendedforusenearanyunimprovedforest,brush,or
grasscoveredland,theengineexhaustshouldbeequippedwith
a sparkarrestor.Makesureyoucomplywith applicablelocal,

PREPARATION

SAFE HANDLING OF GASOLINE
Toavoidpersonalinjuryor propertydamageuseextremecarein
handlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremelyflammableandthevaporsare
explosive.Seriouspersonalinjurycanoccurwhengasolineisspilled
onyourselfor yourclotheswhichcanignite. Washyourskinand
changeclothesimmediately.
Useonlyanapprovedgasolinecontainer.
Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipes,andothersourcesof
ignition.
Neverfuelmachineindoors.
Neverremovegascapor addfuelwhiletheengineishotor
running.
Allowenginetocoolat leasttwo minutesbeforerefueling.
Neveroverfillthefueltank.Filltanktono morethan1/2inch
belowbottomoffillerneckto providespaceforfuelexpansion.
Replacegasolinecapandtightensecurely.
Ifgasolineisspilled,wipeitoff theengineandequipmentand
movemachineto anotherarea.Waitfive (5)minutesbefore
startingtheengine.
Neverstorethemachineorfuelcontainerinsidewherethereisan
openflame,sparkor pilotlightason awaterheater,spaceheater,

OPERATION
1. Beforestartingthis machine,reviewthe"SafetyInstructions".
Failuretofollowtheserulesmayresultin seriousinjurytothe
operatoror bystanders.
2. Neverleavethismachineunattendedwiththeenginerunning.
3. Donotoperatemachinewhileundertheinfluenceofalcohol,
drugs,ormedication.
4. Neverallowanyonetooperatethismachinewithoutproper
instruction.
5. Alwaysoperatethismachinewithall safetyequipmentin place
andworking.Makesureall controlsareoperatingproperlyfor
safeoperation.
6. OperatorZone
HorizontalOperatingPosition:Standon thecontrolleverside
ofthelog splitterand stabilizelogasshown,if needed.See
Figure1.
VerticalOperatingPosition:Standinfrontofthelogsplitter
andstabilizelogasshown,if needed.SeeFigure1.
Whenstabilizinglog withlefthand,removeyourhandwhenthe
wedgejust contactsthelogor seriousinjurymayoccur.

7. Whenloadinga log,alwaysplaceyourhandsonthesideof the
log,noton theends,and neveruseyourfoottohelpstabilizea
log.Failuretodo so,mayresultin crushedoramputatedfingers,
toes,hand,or foot.
8. Useonlyyourrighthandtooperatethecontrols.
9. Neverattempttosplit morethanonelogata time.
10. Forlogswhicharenotcutsquare,theleastsquareendandthe
longestportionofthelog shouldbe placedtowardthebeamand
wedge,andthesquareend placedtowardtheendplate.
11. Whensplittingintheverticalposition,stabilizethelogbefore
movingthecontrolhandle.Splitasfollows:
Placelogon theendplateandturnuntilit leansagainstthe
beamand isstable.
Whensplittingextralargeorunevenlogs,thelogmustbe
stabilizedwithwoodenshimsor splitwoodbetweenthelog
andend plateorground.
12. Alwayskeepfingersawayfromanycracksthatopenin thelog
whilesplitting.Theycanquicklycloseandpinchor amputateyour
fingers.
13. Keepyourworkareaclean.Immediatelyremovesplitwood
aroundthemachinesoyoudo notstumbleoverit.
14. Donotchangetheenginegovernorsettingsoroverspeedthe
engine.Thegovernorcontrolsthemaximumsafeoperatingspeed
oftheengine.
15. Nevermovethismachinewhiletheengineis running.
16. Thismachineshouldnotbe towedonanystreet,highwayor
publicroadwithoutcheckingtheexistingfederal,state,orlocal
vehiclerequirements.Anylicensingor modificationssuchas
taillights,etc.,neededtocomply,isthesoleresponsibilityofthe
purchaser.Ifa "Statementof Origin"is requiredinyourstate,see
yourlocaldealer.
17.Donottowmachineover45mph.
18.SeeTransportingtheLogSplittersectioninthismanualforproper
towinginstructionsonceallfederal,local,orstaterequirements
aremet.
MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE
1. Stoptheengine,disconnectthesparkplugandgrounditagainst
theenginebeforecleaning,orinspectingthemachine.
2. Stoptheengineandrelievehydraulicsystempressurebycycling
thevalvecontrolleverfromforwardto reverseseveraltimeswhile
engineisnotrunning;returningto neutralbeforerepairingor
adjustingfittings,hoses,tubing,or othersystemcomponents.
3. Topreventfires,cleandebrisandchafffromtheengineand
mufflerareas.Iftheengineis equippedwitha sparkarrester
muffler,cleanand inspectit regularlyaccordingtomanufacturers
instructions.Replaceifdamaged.
4. Periodicallycheckthatall nutsandbolts,hoseclamps,and
hydraulicfittingsaretightto besureequipmentis insafeworking
condition.
5. Checkallsafetyguardsandshieldstobe suretheyareinthe
properposition.Neveroperatewithsafetyguards,shields,or
otherprotectivefeaturesremoved.
6. Thepressurereliefvalveispresetat thefactory.Donotadjustthe
valve.
7. Neverattempttomovethismachineoverhillyor uneventerrain
withouta towvehicleor adequatehelp.
8. Foryoursafety,replaceall damagedor wornpartsimmediately
withoriginalequipmentmanufacturer's(O.E.M)partsonly.Useof
partswhichdo notmeettheoriginalequipmentspecificationsmay
leadtoimproperperformanceandcompromisesafety!
9. Donotalterthismachinein anymanner,alterationssuchas
attachinga ropeorextensiontothecontrolhandle,or addingto
thewidthor heightof thewedgemayresultin personalinjury.
10. AccordingtotheConsumerProductsSafetyCommission(CPSC)
andtheU.S.EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA),thisproduct
hasan Average UsefulLifeofseven(7)years,or 130hoursof
operation.AttheendoftheAverage UsefulLifehavethe machine
inspectedannuallybyan authorizedservicedealertoensurethat
allmechanicalandsafetysystemsareworkingproperlyand not
wornexcessively.Failuretodo socanresultinaccidents,injuries
ordeath.
SPARK ARRESTOR
Thismachineis equippedwithan internalcombustionengineand
shouldnotbe usedonornearanyunimprovedforest-covered,brush
coveredor grass-coveredlandunlesstheengine'sexhaustsystem
isequippedwitha sparkarrestermeetingapplicablelocalor state
laws(ifany).
Ifa sparkarresterisused,itshouldbemaintainedin effectiveworking
orderbytheoperator.IntheStateofCaliforniatheaboveis required
bylaw(Section4442oftheCaliforniaPublicResourcesCode).Other
statesmayhavesimilarlaws.Federallawsapplyonfederallands.

UNPACKING & ASSEMBLING THE LOG
SPLITTER
TOOLS NEEDED: Safetyglasses,leathergloves,wirecutters,prybar
and/orclawhammer.
1. Usea prybarorclawhammerto loosenand removethetopof
thecrate.
2. Usea prybarorclawhammerto removethesidesof thecrate,
beginningwiththeshortsides(orleftand rightsideofthelog
splitter).Setthesidesofthecrateasidetoavoidinjury.
3. Onthefrontsideofthecratethetongueassemblyisattachedon
theinsideof thecratewitha cabletie.Cutthecabletieto remove
thetongue.
4. Removethe largeplasticcoveranddiscard.
DoNOTremoveanywoodor cutanystrapssecuringthelogsplitter
[orits componentstothelog splitteror thecrateatthistime.Only
[removestrapsand/orwoodwheninstructedtodoso.
5. inspectthebottomofthecrateforanyprotrudingstaplesor wood
splintersandremove.
6. Removeanyloosepartsincludedwiththelogsplitter(i.e.opera-
tot'smanual,etc.).
7. Removethe springclipandclevispinfromthejack standonthe
tongueandthenpivotthejackstandtowardsthegroundintothe
operatingposition.SeeFigure1.
8. Securethejack standin positionwiththeclevispinandspring
clip.See Figure1.
9. Withthelogsplitterstillsecuredtothebottomd thecrate,removetwo
hexboltsandhexnutsfromthetankbracketandremovethepieced
woodinsidethetankbrackets.SeeFigure2.

Tire Pressure
Themaxrecommendedoperatingpressureis30 psi. Donot,under
anycircumstances,exceedthemanufacturer'srecommendedpsi.
Maintainequalpressureon alltires.
Excessivepressurewhenseatingbeadsmaycausetire/rim
toburstwithforcesufficienttocauseseriousinjury.
Gas and Oil Fill-Up
Servicetheenginewithgasolineandoil asinstructedbelow.Readthe
instructionscardully.
Useextremecarewhenhandlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremely
flammableandthevaporsareexplosive.Neverfuelthemachine
indoorsor whiletheengineishotor running.
NOTE:Yourlogsplittermaybe shippedwithmotoroil intheengine.
YouMUSTchecktheoil levelbeforeoperating.Becarefulnotto
overfill.Gasolinecanbeaddedto theenginewhenthelog splitteris
ineitherthehorizontalor verticalposition.However,it maybeeasier
whenthesplitterisintheverticalposition.
1. Removeoil filldipstick.
2. Checktheoil levelmakingcertainnotto rubthedipstickalongthe
insidewallsoftheoilfilltube.Thiswouldresultin a falsedipstick
reading.RefilltotheFULLmarkonthedipstick,ifnecessary.
Replacethedipstickandtighten.
3. Ifnecessary,withthelog splitteron levelground,useafunnelto
fillenginewithoil totheFULLmarkonthedipstick.Becarefulnot
tooverfill.Overfillingwillcausetheenginetosmokeprofuselyand
will resultinpoorengineperformance.
4. Checktheoil levelthreetimespriorto startingtheenginetobe
certainyou'vegottenanaccuratedipstickreading.Runningthe
enginewithtoolittleoil canresultin permanentenginedamage.
Gasoline
1. Removethefuelcapfromthefueltank.
2. Makesurethecontainerfromwhichyouwillpourthegasolineis
cleanandfreefromrustorforeignparticles.Neverusegasoline
that maybestalefromlongperiodsof storagein itscontainer.
Gasolinethathasbeensittingforanyperiodlongerthanfour
weeksshouldbeconsideredstale.
3. Fillthefueltankwithabout1.5quartsofclean,freshgasolinewith
a minimumof85 octane.
NOTE:Neveroverfillthefueltank.Filltanktono morethan1/2inch
belowbottomoffillernecktoprovidespaceforfuelexpansion.
PREPARING THE LOG SPLITTER
1. Lubricatethe beamarea(wherethesplittingwedgewillslide)with
engineoil. Donotusegrease.
2. Removetheventedreservoirdipstick,whichis locatedinfrontof
theengineon topof thereservoirtank.SeeFigure8.

NOTE:Thelogsplitterisfilledtotheproperoperatinglevelfromthemanu-
facturerwithShellTellus®32HydraulicFluid.However,youMUSTcheckthe
fluidlevelbeforeoperating.Ifnotfilled,proceedwiththefollowingsteps:
Muchd theoriginalfluidhasbeendrawnintothecylinderand hoses.
Makecertainto refillthereservoirtopreventdamagetothehydraulic
pump.
3. Checkthefluidlevelusingthedipstick.SeeFigure8.Donot
overfill.
4. Replacetheventeddipsticksecurely,tighteningit untilthetopof
thethreadsareflushwithtopofthepipe.
5. Disconnectthesparkplugand primethepumpbypullingthe
recoilstarterasfaras itwillgo.Repeatapproximately10times.
6. Reconnectthesparkplugwireandstarttheenginefollowingthe
instructionsin theOperationsection.
7. Usethecontrolhandletoengagethewedgetothefarthest
extendedposition.Thenretractthewedge.
8. Refillthetankasspecifiedon thedipstick.
NOTE:Failureto refillthetankwillvoidthesplitter'swarranty.
9. Extendand retractthewedge12completecyclesto removeany
airtrappedinthesystem(thesystemis"self-bleeding").
10. Refillthereservoirwithintherangemarkedonthedipstick.
NOTE:Somefluidmayoverflowfromtheventplugasthesystem
buildsheatandthefluidexpandsandseeksa balancedlevel.

toeliminateexcessspacebetweenthewedgeandthebeam.
1. Loosenthejam nutson thetwoadjustmentboltson thesideof
thewedge.See Figure16.

Theflexiblepumpcouplerisa nylon"spider"insert,locatedbetween

tweentheengineandthepumpcontactanauthorizedservicedealer.
If thecouplerfailscompletely,youwillexperiencea lossofpower.
TIRES
Themaximumpressureforthetiresis 30psi.Donotexceedthe
manufacturer'srecommendedpsiunderanycircumstances.Maintain
equalpressureonall tires.
Excessivepressurewhenseatingbeadsmaycausethetire/rim
assemblytoburstwithforcesufficientto causeseriousinjury.Refer

1. Disconnectthesuctionhosefromthe bottomofthereservoirtank.

thelog splitterisdesignedsothegibsonthesideof thewedgeplate
canbe removedandrotatedand/orturnedoverforevenwear.
Makecertainto readjusttheadjustmentboltssothewedgemoves
freely,butno excessspaceexistsbetweenthewedgeplateandthe
beam.
ENGINE

1. Stoptheengineandwait severalminutesbeforecheckingtheoil
level.
2. Removetheoilfilldipstick.
3. Checktheoillevelon thedipstick.Withtheengineon level
ground,theoil mustbeto theFULLmarkon thedipstick.
4. Replacethedipstickandtighten.

Useextremecautionwhenworkingwith kerosene.It isanextremely
flammablefluid.
Service Spark Plug
1. Cleanthesparkplugandresetthegapto .030"at leastoncea
seasonorevery50hoursofoperation.
2. Cleantheareaaroundthesparkplug.Removeandinspectthe
sparkplug.
3. Replacethesparkplugiftheelectrodesare pitted,burnedorthe
porcelainiscracked.

LOG SPLITTER
1. Cleanthelogsplitterthoroughly.
2. Wipethelogsplitterwithanoiledragtopreventrust,especially
onthewedgeandthebeam.
ENGINE
NOTE:Itisimportantto preventgumdepositsfromformingin the
essentialfuelsystempartssuchasthecarburetor,fuelfilter,fuelhose
ortankduringstorage.Also,alcoholblendedfuels (calledgasoholor
usingethanolor methanol)canattractmoisturewhichleadstosepara-
tionandformationofacidsduringstorage.Acidicgascandamagethe
fuelsystemof anenginewhileinstorage.
1. Drainthefueltankbyrunningtheengineuntilthefuellinesand
carburetorareempty.Alwaysdrainthefuelintoan approved
containeroutdoorsawayfromopenflame.Besuretheengineis
cool.Donotsmokewhilehandlingthefuel.
NOTE:Neveruseengineorcarburetorcleanerproductsinthefuel
tankor permanentdamagemayoccur.Usefreshfuelnextseason.
2. Removethe sparkplug,pourapproximately1/2oz.ofengineoil
intocylinderandcrankitslowlytodistributetheoil.
3. Replacethesparkplug.
FUEL STABILIZER
NOTE:Fuelstabilizerisanacceptablealternativein minimizingthe
formationoffuelgumdepositsduringstorage.
Pleasefollowtheinstructionsbelowforstoringyourlogsplitterwith
fuelandstabilizerintheengine:
1. Addstabilizertothegasolinein thefueltankor storagecontainer.
Alwaysfollowthemixratiofoundonthestabilizercontainer.
2. Runtheengineatleast10minutesafteraddingstabilizertoallow
thestabilizertoreachthecarburetor.
NOTE:Donotdrainthegastankandcarburetorif usingfuelstabilizer.
Drainall theoilfromthecrankcase(thisshouldbedoneafterthe
enginehasbeenoperatedand isstillwarm)and refillthecrankcase
withfreshoil.

Donotstorethegasolinefromoneseasontoanother.
Replaceyourgasolinecanif itstartstorust.
Storethelogsplitterin a clean,dryarea.Donotstoreit nextto
anycorrosivematerials,suchasfertilizer.
Wipetheequipmentwithan oiledragto preventrust.
