Deployment Considerations
ThefollowingradiationrelatedconsiderationsmustbeexaminedbeforedeployingatypicalSNOM
M700System.Theseincludes(butnotlimitedto):
BuildingPenetration:
Whenasignalstrikesabuildingitisdiffractedorabsorbed;thereforetosome extendthesignalis
reduced.Theamountofabsorptionisdependentofthe
kindofbuildinganditsenvironment,the
amountofsolidstructure.Thisisanimportantconsiderationincoverageplanning.
Note: Thestructureofthebuildingwillhaveanimpactofcoveragerange.
InterferenceSources:
Signalsfromreceivingantennasareweakenedbyinterferencefromothersignals.Thesesignalsmay
befrom
thesamenetworkorotherobjects.AwellplannedDECTmulticellinstallationshouldidentify
potentialinterferencesourcesforoptimalplacementofBasestationsandrepeaters.
Note: OtherDECTsystemsordevicestransmittingin similarfrequencies,weakensreception.
Thereforeitisrecommendedtosetupbasestationssufficientlyclosetoeach
other.
Radio/CellRange:
Thesuggesteddistancebetweentwobasestationsdependsonthephysicalpathbetweenthebase
stations.Ifthepathlossislessened,e.g.byminimizingamountofwalls/obstaclesinthepath,then
signalsfrombasestationswillcovermoredistance.Inatypicalofficebuildingthesuggested
distance
betweentwobasestationsis2040m.

Capacity Planning
Eachbasestationhasamaximumlimitofparallelcalls.
ToavoidinsufficientuserexperiencethroughcongestedDECTnetwork,thecapacityfortheDECT
networkshouldbeplannedinadvance.
Duetodifferentusagepatterns,thenumberofbasestationrequiredtofulfilthedemandofvoice
channelsmayvary.
Thetotalcapacityinthecoverageareaofabasestationisalwayslimitedtothecapacityofasingle
basestation.
Site Planning / Cell Coverage
Theactualcellcoverageandqualityinaninstallationcanbedeterminedwithaspecialhandset
feature,inwhichthehandsetestablishesanaudioloop.
Snomurgentlyrecommendsto
Note: Thisfeaturecanbeusedwithbasestationsinaninfrastructure,butalsowithsingle
basestationswithoutEthernetconnection,
sothefeatureallowstoidentifyobstacles
anddifficultiesinaninstallation.
1. Using the Handset for reception measurement
Beforestartingthedeploymentmeasuringmakesurethehandsetisproperlycharged.Identifythe
MACaddressofthebasestationtowhichyouwanttomeasure.AswellmanuallyreadtheMAC
addressonthebasestationlabelsonthebacksideforthedevicetobeusedwiththe
handset.The
handsetdoesnotneedtobe(pre)registeredtoaparticularbase.
1. Press“Menu”followedbythekeys:*47*togetthehandsetintofindbasesmenu.
Note:Stayclosetothebasestationtostartthesearch.

Snomrecommendsusingabuildingplanandcheckingthebasestationcoverageusingthehandset
signalstrengthindicationRSSIlevelfromeachbasestation.

ontheplandrawing.AcceptablespotsarespotswherethehandsetshowsRSSIlevelsbetter
than075dBm(meaninglowernumericnumber)andwhereyouverifiedviaaudioloopback
thatthereceptionisclear.
ItisrecommendedtohaveaRSSIvaluebetterthan/equalto‐75dBm,andnever
below‐90dBm.:
Lowernumericnumberthan075dBmonthehandsetscreen.Pleasenotethattheminusisnot
shownonthescreen.
Typically,installationssuchasofficebuildings,warehousesandhospitalityshouldbeequippedwith
bothbasestationsandrepeatersonseveralfloorstocreateuniformandcompl e teradio
coverage.
Donotlinktwoormoremulticellbasestationviaarepeater.Arepeatershallbeonlyusedtoextend
thecoverageofasinglebasestation.IfEthernetisavailableitisrecommendedtouseamulticell
stationratherthanarepeater.
Openareascanbecoveredwitha
sparsenetworkofbasestations.Insuchapplications,thebase
stationsand/orrepeaterscoveranextendedrangeduetotheextendedlineofsightradiopropagation
capability.

IP configuration
ThesnomM700canoperateusingavarietyoftheIPnetworksettings,allowingittobeconfiguredfor
differentnetworks.
ThebasestationcanbeconfiguredforeitherdynamicIPaddressretrievalusingDHCPorsetupfor
usageofafixedIPaddress.Bydefaultdynamicconfigurationisconfigured.
ThebasestationcanalsobeconfiguredforusageofavirtualLAN(VLAN),whichistherecommended
configuration,asadedicatedVLANforvoicetrafficinacorporatenetworkcanprovidethemost
optimalQualityofService(QoS).NoVLANtagisenabledasdefault.TheVLANcanbe
configured
duringbootupviaDHCPOption132(VLANID)andOption133(VLANQoS).
DedicatedQoSsettingsintheIPpacketsforsupportofDiffServ,ToSandcanbeenabledusingthebase
stationconfigurationpageorsnomprovisioning.
ThecommunicationbetweenthebasestationsiseitherIPMulticast
orPeerToPeercommunication.
IPMulticastisthepreferredoptionasitgeneratestheleasttraffic,butitrequireseitherasingleIP
subnetorIPMulticastpassthroughinthenetworkswitches.
M700/M5 Repeater Placement Recommendations
Theantennasinthebasestationsareclosetoomnidirectional;therebythereisnoneedtoconsider
howthebasestationsfaceeachotherwhendeployingthem.
Thesearesomerecommendationsforplacementstrategies:
AroundCorridors:
Basestations/repeatershouldbedeployedverticallypreferablyatcorridorintersectionswhere
propagationpatternsfollow
thecorridorpatterns.Incasetherearehighobjectsinthearea,thebase
station/repeatershouldbeinstalledabo v ethoseobjects.
MultiStoryBuildings:
Basestationsandrepeaterscanbeinstalledonoppositesidesofthefloorstotakeadvantageofthe
floortofloorcoverage.Thecoveragedesigncannot
relyentirelyonfloortofloorpropagation;each
casemustbeverifiedduetovariationsinlocalattenuationpatterns.
LargeHalls:
Basestationsandrepeaterscanbedeployedinlargehallsthatcontainacentralopenspaceareawith
windowstotheotherareas.Thisprovidesagoodcoveragefor
theroomsintheinnercircleonall
floors.Inlargehalls,basestations/repeatershouldbeinstalledverticallyinthemiddleofthespace
belowtheceiling.
MountingPositions:
WhenBasestationsandrepeateraremountedverticallyonawall,theradiocoverageinfrontofthese
devicesistwiceas
largeasthecoverageattherear.Thebasestationsshouldalwaysbemounted
higherthattheobstructiveobjectsintheareae.g.minimumhigherthan2mabovefloor.
Repeatersshouldbeinstalledinthemi ddleofcorridorsandsmallrooms.

Basestationsandrepeatersshouldnotbedeployednearlargemetallicobjects.Thisincludesmetallic
inshelvesinwarehouses.
ReinforcedConcreteStructures:
Thesestructuresreducesignalstrengthdramaticallyinsidethebuilding.Theyreducetheradio
coveragerangeoftheBasestationsandrepeatersandtherefore
requireahighernumberofbase
stationsorrepeatersinthebuilding.Lightertypesofconstructionmaterialsrequirefewerbase
stationssinceattenuationfiguresareconsiderablylower.


TheM700systemisaverypowerfulDECTsystem.Comparedtomostcompetitorsitdoesnotrequire
specialcontrollersorlicensesforbuildingyourDECTnetwork.Aninstallationcanbeextendedwith
additionalM700basestations.
Duetothehighlyintegra tedsystemandthe“sharing”ofresourcestherearesomelimitations
and
thingstocons iderwhileplanningorextendinganexistinginstallation:
Onebasestationwillbecomethemasterbasestation,whichwill“organize”theinstallation
andsynchronizetheotherbasestations(slavebasestations)withthenetworktopology.
Outgoingfromthe“masterbasestation”,amaximumof6
additionalbasestationslevelscan
beinstalled.Thismeansamaximu mof7levelsofbasestationsinaline(row)includingthe
master.
Themaximumamountofusers/handsets/SIPregistrationsis200.
Eachbasestationcanholda maximumof30users,soyouneedatleast7basestations
to
achievethemaximuma mountofusers(butmorethan7won’tallowmorethan200users).
Eachbasestationallowstohave8narrowbandcallsinparallel

TodeployamulticellDECTnetwork,therearesomerequirementstofollowandsomelimitations.
AmulticellDECTnetworkisbasedonamaster/slavearchitecture.Themasterbasestationwillensure
thatalltheslavereceivethenetworklayout.Thismeanstheslavecellsare“synchronized”andare
“aware”of
eachothertoallowseamlesshandoverforusershandsets.
Amaximumof7synclevelsaresupported,thatmeansstartingfromthesyncMaster(Level1),youcan
deployandcascadeupto6additionalbasestations(slaves)outgoingfromthemaster.Thismeans,if
youwanttocovera
longcorridor,youshouldsetupthemasterbasestationinthemiddle,thisallows
thelevelstobeinbothdirections.


