TO THE
CAMERA

When this lens is attached
to the
camera body it will

tunction
in the same
way
as
your
normal
lens.
Please reler to the

SETTING THE
EXPOSURE MODE
When a Sigma
lens
is
mounted on
your
camera,
il tunctions in lhe same manner as
your
normal lens.
However, depending on the camera
body, the exposure
setlings
may vary. Please refer lo lhe camera
instruclion
book.
The basic setting is as
follows:
(For
Sigma
SA,
minotta AF and
Canon
AF)
Exposure
modes
and Diaphragm values are sel by the
conlrols.
on the camera body, therefore the lens does
nol have a diaphragm control ring. Please refer
lo
your
camera's instruction booklet.
(For
Mkon
AF/MF, Minolla ilF)
When
you
use lhe Program
exposure
mods
or Shutler speed
priority
aulo
mod€,
th€ Diaphragm control ring
musi be
sel to lhe smallest F-stop
(i.e.
largesl number). All Nikon AF/MF and Minolia MF lenses
have
a
salety button which should be moved to the lock
position (fig2).
When
you
use the Aperture
priority
auto
mode or Manual
exposure mode, unlock the butlon and sel the Diaphragm value
by
tuming the ring.
(For
Pentax AF/MF)
When
you
use the Program exposure mode or
Shutter speed
priority
auto mode, tum the Diaphragm
ring
on
lhe lens
to the smallest F-stop
(i.e.
largest number),
lhen set lo
the
'A'
position
whil€
pressing
the auto lock
button. When
you
use the Aperiure
priority
auto mode
or Manual
exposure
mod€,
turn the Diaphragm ring
away
from
lhe
'A'setting
whib
pressing
th€ aulo lock
button, and s€t lhe Diaphragm value by
luming the
ring
(lig.3).
FOCUSING AND ZOOMING
(Auto
Focus)
When
you
use the AF lens with
the
AF
camera body, Auto Focusing
is
possible.
Selecl
the
autofocus mode
on
your
camera body
(set
the
focus mode
switch on the lens
lo'AF tor Sigma
SA
and
Canon
AF lens).
ln
the autofocus
mode,
your
camera
will
sel the
tocus
aulomatically.
While aulo focusing,
please
do not touch
the
focus
ring around
the
lens.
iTo
avoid
damaging AF mechanism,
please
do not
tum the focus dng manualty
while in the autofocus
mode.

You
can set lhe focus
by
turning
the
locus ring.
When
you
focus manually
wilh AF lens, select the manual
focus mode
on
your
camera
body
(sel
the locus mode
swilch on the l€ns
to
'MF'

Owhen
operating this lens in
manual focus mode,
it is recommended
that conecl tocus
be conlirmed
visually in the view{inder rather
than relying
on the dislance
scale. This is due
lo
possible
focus
shift
resulling
lrom extreme
changes in temperalure
which cause various
components in
lhe lens to expand
and
contact.
Special allowance is made tor
this at the infinity
setting.
(Zooming)
Fotate
the Rubber
grip
on
lhe
zoom
ring
lo lhe desired
position.
OPERETION OF MACRO SWITCH
1.Sel the zoom ring to
the
maximum
telephoto
sening.
2.Turn
the
Macro
Switch
lo lhe
'MACRO'
position
(fig.4).
Now
the
focus
ring will
lum from infinity lo macro
range. The Macro
Switch will not be
able to be changed
to the
'MACRO'
position
if the zoom ring is
set
on
other than the maximum
lelephoto setting.

Macro
Switch is
set on
the'MACRO'
position,
the zoom ring is locked
in the maximum telephoto
sening
and zooming is not
possible.
To
avoid damage
to
the
lens,
please
do not torce
the zoom
ring
to
lum.
3.To return
to lhe
normal
mode,
please
tum lhe
Macro
Switch to the
'NORMAL'
position
while the locus ring
is
out
of lhe macro range. lt the tocus ring
is in
lhe macro range,
the switch will not
move.
MAGNIFICATION
The indication
ofthe lens
as
"1:xx"
on afocusing
distance
scale represent
the magnification
(commonly
called
the reproduction
ratio).
For
example when
you
are
in focus
at the"l:3"position
on
the
scale, a subject with
an
actual size
of 3cm
will have an
image size
of 1cm
on the film.(fig.O)
LENS
HOOD
A bayonet
type detachable lens hood is
provided
with lens. The lens hood helps
prevdnt
flare
and
ghost
images caused by
bright
illumination from
beyond the
sub.'ect area. When attaching, be sure to turn
the hood
to
its
fully locked
position(fig.6).
Owhen
mounting
or removing the lens hood, the lens
should be in the manual tocus mode in
order to avoid
the
damage to the
lens
or camera.
awhen
taking
photographs
using
the built-in
flash,it is
advisable
to
removethe lens hood
so asto avoid cutting
off any
ol the
flash
output,
which
could cause a shadow in
the
picture.
aThe
lens
hood
can de revrse-mounted for
storage
(fig.7).
DEPTH
OF FIELD
When
you
set the focus lor a
padicular
subiect, there is an area in front of and b€hind
your
subject that will
also be in locus.
This
is called the
Depth of
Field.
Generally, the larger the aperture
(smaller
F-stop number),
the
shallower
th€ depth of
lield.
As
shown
in
(fiq.8),at
the
F22
aperture
and
at a
3m
(9.8ft).
focusing
distance,
the
subiect
will be
in
focus
lrom about
2.2m(6.6ft)to
5m
(16.4ft).
INFRARED
PHOTOGRAPHY
When
photographing
using infrared film
and
infrared
litters
an adjuslment lo
locus
must be made.
First focus in the normal
way.
Then
set focus switch
to manual focus mode. Tum the tocus ring
manually
so
that the distance scale marking thal was
previously
alignod wilh the focuJzoom index mark
is now
aligned
with the
infrared
guide
mark
"R" (fig.g).
FILTERS
lOnly
one
litler
should be used at a time. Two
or more tilters
and/or special
thicker lilters,
like a
potarizing
filler,
may
cause vignetting.
OWhen
mounting
or
removing
the filter, the lens
should be
in
the manuallocus mode, and
should
be held
by
the
front
of the lens banel in
order
to avoid damaging the lens and camera
(fig-10).
OWhen
using a
polarizing
tilter with AF camera,
use
the'circular'type.
BASIC
