1 The safeRS Designer
The safeRS Designer is a software used to configure safeRS, the first volumetric linear
s
afety barrier based on a radar technology.
The application can be downloaded for free from the webpage www.sick.com, both in
its Microsoft Windows and macOS versions.
Please note that you can only use it while your computer is connected to an actual
safeRS control through USB.
It allows to perform the following functions:
configure the safeRS functional parameters, such as machinery length, alarm and
pre-alarm depths, input and output settings, etc…
properly place and orient the number of sensors required to secure a given area
print the configuration report
check the functioning of the system
download the system log files.

5 Configuration
Through the C
onfiguration page, the user can configure the safeRS, choosing between
the linear configuration (i.e. all the sensor placed along a line in order to create a linear
barrier and unique alarm and pre-alarm depths for the whole safeRS) and the manual
configuration (free placement of the sensors and specific alarm and pre-alarm depths for
each sensor).
5.1 Linear configuration
Below, the correct procedure to follow in order to configure the system is described:
1.
Set the Barrier Length in the right side of the Configuration page.
2. Determine the functions of the system needed to protect the area: stopping func‐
tion, restart function or both of them). According to this choice, the blind spots
allowed are different and, consequently, even the position of the sensors change.
3. Determine the installation height (H) and the tilt angle, i.e. the inclination, (I) of the
sensors.
4. Compute the dangerous area and the alarm depth (S) of the system as indicated
in standards ISO 13855 and ISO 13857, using the chosen height and installation
of the sensors:
where
°
K is t
he maximum dangerous area access speed in [mm/s] (always 1600)
°
T is the total system stopping time in [ms] (safeRS, i.e. 100ms, + machinery,
calculated in accordance with standard ISO 13855)
°
Ch is a constant in [mm] that takes into account the sensor installation
height
(H) according to standard ISO 13855
Ch = 1200 - 0.4*H
Its minimum allowed value is 850mm.
°
Ci is a constant in [mm] that takes into account the sensor installation incli‐
nation (I)
if H < 500 → Ci = (20 - I)*16
otherwise → Ci = (-I)*16
Its minimum allowed value is 0 mm.
Please see the operating instructions "safeRS" for more details and examples.
5. Set the Alar
m Depth in the Configuration page, once it has checked that it is not lower
than the value S previously computed with the formula. Please keep in mind that,
in order to ensure the safety of the area, it is not possible to set the alarm depth in
the software without its computation with the certified formula.
6. Set the Pre-Alarm Depth, if used, in the Configuration page.
7. Look at the Result Values on the screen and choose one of the linear configurations
suggested by the application.
8. Click on Apply Changes to commit the new configuration on the controller.
5.2 Manual configuration
With the manual c
onfiguration, it is possible to:

3. Remember to click on Apply Changes to commit them to the controller.
5.3 The Apply changes button
In order to commit the changes to the controller and have them applied to the safeRS,
it is im
portant to click on Apply changes on the right side of the top bar.
Please note that the button is present only when the the user is logged in to the system
with the admin password. Have a look at chapter 7, describing the Login page, to have
more details about it.
5.3.1 Apply changes and consequences on Masking
When the environment changes with respect to the one saved by the controller, a mask‐
in
g signal may be generated, for example when a big metallic object is placed in front of
a sensor.
Please take into consideration that, when Apply changes is clicked, the current environ‐
ment in the field of view of the sensors is saved by the system.
So, it is very important to be sure that, when Apply Changes is clicked, there are no
objects obstructing the field of view of the sensors, otherwise the masking signal
could not be generated and the safety of the area is necessarily going to be reduced.
