HEARINGPROTECTIONMANUAL
I. PURPOSE
Thissectionistobeaguideforprotectionfromhearingloss.Protectionofhearing
inindustrialnoisecanbeaccomplishedthroughcontrolofnoiseexposureand
throu ghtheuseofhearingprotectiondevices.
II. PROTECTIVEEAREQUIPMENT
Ifengineeringandadmini strativecontrolsarenotpossi ble,thenproperprotective
hearingprotectionshallbeprovided.
Sincetheprincipalentranceforsoundpressureontheeardrumisthroughthe
externalearcanal,blockingthepassageofsoundwavestoth eear drumprovidesan
effectivemethodofreducingthesoundpressurereachingtheinnerear.
Twotypesofearpr otectionaree arplugsandearmuffs.
A. EarPlugs
1. Properlyfittedea rplugscanprovidenoiseattenuationonthe
orderof30decibels(dB)overaspecificfrequencyband.Itis
importanttomatchthefrequencybandoftheearplugtothe
noisehazard.
2. Earplugsareef fectiveonlyifproperlyseated.Instructthe
employeestoinserttheplugsbyteachingthemtopulltheear
upandback.
3. Earplugsmustbereseatedfromtimetotimeduringthecourse
oftheworkday sincenormalbodymovement(chewing,
yawning,talking)willcausethemtoworkloose.
4. Insertingearplugswillnotdamagetheearnorwill wearing
themdamage theearcanaloreardrumifbotharedone
accordingtoinstructions.
5. Ifear plugsdonotfittightly,theywillnotprovideprotection.Ear
plugsmaybeuncomfortableforafewdays,butlikeanything
new,employeeswilleventuallygetusedtothem.
6. Earplugsshouldbewashedinsoapywarmwatereverythreeto
fourdays.Thedangerofirritationtotheskinlining theear
canalari sesfrompoorhygiene.
7. Earplugsmaybecomehard,orshrink;allemployeeswearing
earplugsshould beinstructedtoreportto thesupervisorwhen
thisoccursandtomakearrangemen tstoobtainanewpair.
8. Drycottondoesnotprovideanyearprotection.
