Alwayswearsafetyglassesor eyeshieldsduringoperation
andwhile performinganadjustmentorrepairto protectyour
eyes.Thrownobjectswhich ricochetcancause serious
injurytothe eyes.
Do notoperatewithoutwearingadequatewinterouter
garments.Do notwearjewelry,longscarvesorother
looseclothing,whichcould becomeentangledin moving
parts.Wearfootwearwhich willimprovefootingon
slipperysurfaces.
Useagroundedthree-wireextensioncordand receptacle
forall unitswithelectric startengines.
Adjustcollectorhousingheighttocleargravelorcrushed

Operation

auger/impellerhousingorchuteassembly.Contactwiththe
rotatingpartscanamputatehandsandfeet.
2. Theauger/impellercontrolleverisa safetydevice.Never
bypassits operation.Doingsomakesthe machineunsafe
andmaycausepersonalinjury.
3. Thecontrolleversmustoperateeasilyin bothdirections
andautomaticallyreturntothe disengagedpositionwhen
released.
4. Neveroperatewitha missingordamagedchuteassembly.
Keepallsafetydevicesin placeandworking.
5. Neverrunanengineindoorsor inapoorlyventilatedarea.
Engineexhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,an odorlessand
deadlygas.

engine,disconnectthesparkplugwireandgroundit against
the engine.Inspectthoroughlyfordamage.Repairany
damagebeforestartingandoperating.
17.Disengageall controlleversandstopenginebeforeyou
leavetheoperatingposition(behindthe handles).Wait
untilthe auger/impellercomestoacompletestopbefore
uncloggingthechuteassembly,makinganyadjustments,or
inspections.
18.Neverput yourhandinthe dischargeorcollectoropenings.
Alwaysusetheclean-outtool providedto unclogthe
dischargeopening.Do notunclogchuteassemblywhile
engineis running.Shutoffengineandremainbehind
handlesuntilallmovingpartshavestoppedbefore
unclogging.
19.Useonlyattachmentsandaccessoriesapprovedbythe
manufacturer(e.g.wheelweights,tire chains,cabsetc.).

Maintenance & Storage
1. Nevertamperwithsafetydevices.Checktheirproper
operationregularly.Refertothe maintenanceand
adjustmentsectionsofthismanual.
2. Beforecleaning,repairing,or inspectingmachine
disengageall controlleversandstopthe engine.Wait until
theauger/impellercometoacompletestop.Disconnectthe
sparkplugwireandgroundagainstthe engineto prevent
unintendedstarting.
3. Checkboltsandscrewsfor propertightnessatfrequent
intervalstokeepthe machinein safeworkingcondition.
Also,visuallyinspectmachineforanydamage.
4. Donotchangetheenginegovernorsettingor over-speed
theengine.Thegovernorcontrolsthemaximumsafe
operatingspeedoftheengine.
5. Snowthrowershaveplatesandskidshoesaresubjectto
wearanddamage.Foryoursafetyprotection,frequently
checkallcomponentsand replacewith originalequipment
manufacturer's(OEM)partsonly."Useof partswhichdo
notmeetthe originalequipmentspecificationsmayleadto
improperperformanceandcompromisesafety!"
6. Checkcontrolsperiodicallytoverify theyengageand
disengageproperlyandadjust,if necessary.Referto the
adjustmentsection inthis operator'smanualforinstructions.
7. Maintainor replacesafetyandinstructionlabels,as
necessary.

Forshippingreasons,thesnowthrowerhasbeen
packagedwiththeupperchutepivotedall thewaydown.
Topivotitupward,proceedasfollows:
1. Turnthechuteuntilthechuteopeningisfacing
straightahead.
2. Removetheknobandcarriageboltfromthelower
chute. SeeFigure2.
3. Pivottheupperchuteupwardoverthelip onthelower
chutesothatthereisNOgapbetweentheupper

Before Starting

recommendedthatyoureadtheenginemanualalso
includedwiththis unit.
Gas and Oil Fill-Up
1. Checkoilandgasolinelevelandadd ifnecessary.
Followrelatedinstructionsintheseparateengine
manualpackedwithyoursnowthrower.

To Start Engine
1. Insertignitionkeyintoslot.
2. Nowfollowtheinstructionsbelowasitpertainsto

Electric Starter (if so equipped)
WARNING:Theelectricstartermust
be usedwitha properly groundedthree-prong receptacleat all times to
avoidthe possibilityof electric shock.
Follow all instructionscarefullyprior
to operating the electric starter.
1. Theelectricstarterisequippedwitha grounded
three-wirepowercordandplug,andisdesignedto
operateon 120voltAChouseholdcurrent.
2. Determinethatyourhousewiringisa three-wire
groundedsystem.Aska licensedelectricianifyou
arenotcertain.
3. If your homewiringsystem isnot a three-wire
grounded system, do notusethiselectricstarter
underanyconditions.
4. If your homeelectricalsystemisgrounded, but
a three-holereceptacleisnotavailable,oneshould
beinstalledbya licensedelectricianbeforeusingthe
electricstarter.
5. If you havea grounded three-prong receptacle,
proceedasfollows:

7. Pushprimerslowly,three(3) times,makingsureto
coverventholewhenpushing.
8. Connectpowercordtoswitchboxondashpanel.

4. If engineiswarm,pushprimerbuttononlyonce.
NOTE:Alwayscoverventholein primerbuttonwhen
pushing.Additionalprimingmaybe necessaryforfirst
startiftemperatureisbelow150F(-90C).
5. Graspstarterhandleandpullropeoutslowly,untilit
pullsslightlyharder.Letroperewindslowly.
6. Pullstarterhandlerapidly.Donotallowhandleto snap
back.Allowitto rewindslowlywhilekeepinga firm
holdonthestarterhandle.
7. Asenginewarmsup andbeginsto operateevenly,
rotatechokeleverslowlytoOFFposition.If engine
falters,returntoFULLchoke,thenslowlymovetoOFF
position.

To Stop Engine Operating Tips
1. Tostopengine,turnignitionkeycounter-clockwise.
Disconnectthesparkplugwirefromthesparkplug
to preventaccidentalstartingwhileequipmentis
unattended.
Tohelppreventpossiblefreeze-upof starter,
proceedas follows:
1. Runengineforafew minutesbeforestoppingtohelp
dryoff anymoistureon theengine.
2. Electric Starter (optional}: Connectpowercordto
switchboxon engine,thento 120voltACreceptacle.
Withtheenginerunning,pushstarterbuttonandspin
thestarterforseveralseconds.Theunusualsound
madebyspinningthestarterwillnotharmengineor
starter.Disconnectthepowercordfrom receptacle
first,andthenfromswitchbox.
3. RecoilStarter:Withenginerunning,pullstarterrope
witha rapid,continuousfullarmstrokethreeorfour
times.Pullingthestarterropewillproducea loudclatter-
ingsound,whichisnotharmfultotheengineorstarter.
4. Wipeall snowand moisturefromthecarburetorcover
intheareaof thecontrollevers.Also,movecontrol
leversbackandforthseveraltimes.Leavechoke
controlintheFULLchokeposition.
5. Removeignitionkeyanddisconnectsparkplugwireto
preventaccidentalstarting.
Operating the Snow Thrower
Thepitchofthechuteassemblycontrolstheangleat
whichthesnowisthrown.Adjustthechuteassemblyby
followingtheinstructionsbelow.
1. Loosenthewingknobfoundontheleft sideofthe
chuteassemblyandpivottheupperchuteupwardor
downwardtothedesiredpitch.Retightenthewing
knobbeforeoperatingthesnowthrower.
2. Positionthechuteassemblyopeningbyusingthe
ChuteHandletothrowthe snowinthedesireddirec-
tion.See Figure6.
1. Dischargesnowdownwindwheneverpossible.
Slightlyoverlapeachpreviouslyclearedpath.
2. Liftinguponthehandlewillallowtherubberon the
augersto propelthesnowthrowerforward.Pushing
downwardon thehandlewillraisetheaugersoff the
groundandstopforwardmotion.
NOTE:Excessiveupwardpressureon thehandlewill
resultinprematurewearontherubberaugerblades
whichwouldnotbecoveredbywarranty.
3. Runtheenginefora fewminutesbeforestoppingto
helpdryanymoistureontheengine.

Shave Plate
1. Tochecktheadjustmentoftheshaveplate,placethe
uniton a levelsurface.Thewheels,shaveplateand
augersshouldallcontactlevelsurface.Notethatif the
shaveplateisadjustedtoohigh,snowmayblowunder
thehousing.Iftheshaveplatewearsoutexcessively,
ortheunitdoesnotself-propel,theshaveplatemay
betoolowand needstobeadjusted.
NOTE:On newunitsorunitswitha newshaveplate
installed,theaugersmaybeslightlyoff theground.
2. Toadjust,tipthesnowthrowerbacksothat itrestson
thehandle.Loosenthefourlocknutsand boltswhich
securetheshaveplatetothehousing.See Figure7.

thenutsandboltssecurely.

Removethecarriageboltsand hexlocknutswhich
attachittothesnowthrowerhousing.
Installnewshaveplate(or reverse),makingsurethe
headsofthecarriageboltsare ontheinsideofthe
housing.
Adjusttheshaveplateaccordingtoinstructionsabove
Control Cable
Asa resultofboththecontrolcableandthedrivebelt
stretchingduetowear,periodicadjustmentsmaybe
necessary.
If theaugerseemsto hesitatewhenrotatingwhilethe
enginemaintainsa constantspeed,an adjustmentis
necessary.Proceedasfollows:
Theupperholeinthecontrolhandleprovidesforan
adjustmentincabletension.Toadjust,disconnectthe
endofcontrolcablefromthebottomholeinthecontrol
handleand reinsertit intheupperhole.Insertthecable
fromtheoutsideas shownin Figure8.Testthe snow

or retailer,with respect to anyproduct,shallbind MTD.Duringthe
periodof the warranty, the exclusiveremedyisrepairor replacement

for incidentalor consequentiallossor damageincluding,without
limitation, expensesincurredfor substituteor replacement lawncare
