Before Use
The VR-3EX RCS software is designed to control the VR-3EX using a computer.
By connecting the VR-3EX to your computer via USB, you will be able to copy settings (backup) or update the system software of the VR-3EX in
addition to remote controlling the unit from your computer.

* Connection and operation of the VR-3EX with standard computers running the operating systems described above have been veried, but
connection and operation with all computers satisfying such conditions is not assured. Connection or operation may be impossible due to
dierences in setting specications or the usage environment that are specic to the equipment.
Connecting a Computer Via USB
* Making the connection using an extension cable or USB hub might result in the computer failing to recognize the VR-3EX. We recommend using a
direct connection between the VR-3EX and the computer.
1. Using a USB cable, connect a USB 2.0 port on the computer to the USB port on the VR-3EX.

2. Turn on the power to the VR-3EX.
3. Start the computer.
4. Wait for communication between the VR-3EX and the computer to be established.
When communication with the computer starts, the operating system’s standard driver is automatically installed

Starting the VR-3EX RCS
1. On the computer, double-click “VR-3EXRCS.exe icon.
The VR-3EX RCS will be started and the VR-3EX RCS window will appear on the desktop.
2. In VR-3EX RCS, click [Control ON] button.
The [Control ON] button lights up, and you can now operate the VR-3EX remotely using VR-3EX RCS.
NOTE
If the following symptoms occur, check the values of the settings at the MIDI menu on the VR-3EX.
Problem

Shutting down the VR-3EX RCS
1. Click the “Close button ( button) for the VR-3EX RCS window.

[Control OFF] button
[Control ON] button
These turn the remote control functioning of VR-3EX RCS on and o.
Selecting the [Control ON] button (making it light up orange) enables remote control of the VR-3EX from
VR-3EX RCS.
To end remote control of the VR-3EX and enable operation using the panel on the unit, select the
[Control OFF] button (making it light up orange).

[VIDEO SELECT] buttons Select input channel of the VR-3EX.

Backing Up/Restoring the VR-3EX’s Settings
You can back up the values of settings on the VR-3EX to a computer connected via USB. You can then restore the backed-up data to the VR-3EX when
needed.
Backing Up
1. In VR-3EX RCS, click [Backup] button.
A popup dialog box appears.
2. On the VR-3EX, touch [MENU] g <MIDI> g <STD: Tx BULK
DUMP>.
3. Press the [VALUE] knob on the VR-3EX.
The settings on the VR-3EX are sent to the computer. When sending
nishes, a popup dialog box appears.
4. In the popup dialog box, click [Save] button.
(To quit without backing up, click [Cancel] button.)

5. Specify the destination for saving the le and a le name
(*.txt), then click [OK] button.
The VR-3EX’s setting are backed up as a le on the computer. When
the message “Complete appears, the operation has nished.
Restoring
NOTE
Restoring backed-up data overwrites the current values of
settings on the VR-3EX.
1. In VR-3EX RCS, click [Restore] button.
A popup dialog box appears.
2. In the popup dialog box, click [Load] button.

3. Select the backed-up data to restore, then click [OK]
button.

4. On the VR-3EX, touch [MENU] g <MIDI> g <STD: Rx BULK
DUMP>.
5. Press the [VALUE] knob on the VR-3EX.
6. In the popup dialog box, click [Send] button.
(To quit without restoring, click [Cancel].)
The restore operation is executed. When the message “Complete”
appears, the operation has nished.

Updating the System Software of the VR-3EX
How to tell the version
1. On the VR-3EX, go to “MENU” and select <SETUP> and then
<VERSION> to check the version information.
* Don’t perform the update if the product is already up-to-date.
2. Turn o the power of the VR-3EX.
Getting the update le
Download the system program le for the VR-3EX from the following
Roland website.
Upgrade information for the system program is provided at the
Roland website.

Updating the System Software
NOTE
Never turn o the VR-3EX’s power while the update is in
progress. Otherwise the system program or the VR-3EX itself
may be destroyed.
1. Using a USB cable, connect the VR-3EX and the computer.
2. Power-on the VR-3EX while pressing the [MENU] and
MONITOR [OUTPUT] buttons on the VR-3EX.
The audio channel 3 [SETUP] button on the VR-3EX ashes.
3. Start VR-3EX RCS, and then click [Update] button.
The Update dialog box appears.
• Verify that “Update Mode” is displayed in the VR-3EX:” eld.
• When the VR-3EX eld displays “---”, disconnect the USB cable and
connect it again.
4. Drag the program le (vr3ex_ver****.bin) to the Update
dialog box and drop it.
The version information for the update le is displayed.
5. Go to the Update dialog box and click the [Update] button.
(To quit without updating, click [Cancel] button.)
The update starts.
When the update is completed, the message “Update Complete
appears and the VR-3EX is automatically powered-o.
6. Turn on the power to the VR-3EX.
Follow the procedure described in “How to tell the version on this
page to verify that the update has been applied.
