youplan,test,andexecuteascheduledmigrationoremergencyfailoverofdatacenterservicesfromonesite
toanother.
SRMisanextensiontoVMwarevCenterthatenablesintegrationwitharraybasedreplication,discovery
andmanagementofre
plicateddatastores,andautomatedmigrationofinventoryfromonevCentertoanother.
SRMserverscoordinatetheoperationsofthereplicatedstoragearraysandvCenterserversattwositessothat,
asvirtualmachinesattheprotectedsiteareshutdown,virtualmachinesattherecoverysitestartupanduse
theda
tareplicatedfromtheprotectedsitetoassumeresponsibilityforprovidingthesameservices.Transfer
ofservicesfromonesitetotheotheriscontrolledbyarecoveryplanthatspecifiestheorderinwhichvirtual
machinesareshutdownandstartedup,thecomputeresourcestheyareallocated,andthenetw
orkstheycan
access.SRMletsyoutestarecoveryplan,usingatemporarycopyofthereplicateddata,inawaythatdoesnot
disrupttheongoingoperationsateithersite.

Whatisthemaximumdowntimeyoucanaccept?WhatisyourRecoveryTimeObjective(RTO)?
Howmuchdatalosscanyouaccept?WhatisyourRecoveryPlanObjective(RPO)?
Whatkindofrecoveryplandoyouneedforapartialdisaster,suchasastoragearrayfailure,compared
toacompletedisaster,suchasanentirefacilitybeingunavailablebecauseoffiredamage?
Howdoyouclassifyyourcomputingresourcesforrestorationafteradisaster?Aretheycritical,urgent,
important,normal,ornonessential?
VMwareprofessionalscanassistyouwithperformingariskassessmentanddevelopingaplantohelpensure
recovery.
Overview of SRM Architecture, Installation, and Configuration
SRMusesyourVMwarevSpherereplicateddatastorestoprovideautomatedprotectionofinventoryitems
suchasvirtualmachinesandtemplates.TheSRMserveroperatesasanextensiontothevCenterserverand
theSRMuserinterfaceinstallsasavSphereclientplugin.LikeanyvCenterextension,SRMtakesadvantage
ofvCente
rservicessuchasstoragemanagement,authentication,authorization,guestcustomization,andso
on,andusesthestandardsetofvSphereadministrativetoolstomanagetheseservices.

About the Protected and Recovery Sites
InatypicalSRMinstallation,theprotectedsiteprovidesbusinesscriticaldatacenterservices,andtherecovery
siteprovidesanalternatefacilitytowhichtheseservicescanbemigrated.
Theprotectedsitecanbeanysitewherevirtualinfrastructuresupportsacriticalbusinessneed.Therecovery
sitecanbelocatedthousandsofmilesaw
ayorinthesameroom.Inthetypicalcase,therecoverysiteislocated
inafacilitythatisunlikelytobeaffectedbyanyenvironmental,infrastructure,orotherdisturbancesthataffect
theprotectedsite.SRMhasseveralrequirementsforthevSphereconfigurationsateachsite
EachsitemustincludeatleastonevSpheredatacenter.
Therecoverysitemustsupportarraybasedreplicationwiththeprotectedsite,andmusthavehardware
andnetworkresourcesthatcansupportthesamevirtualmachinesandworkloadsastheprotectedsite.
Atlastonevirtualmachinemustbelocatedonareplicateddatastoreattheprotectedsite.Thisdatastore
mustbesupportedbyastoragearraythatiscompatiblewithSRM.
TheprotectedandrecoverysitesshouldbeconnectedbyareliableIPnetwork. Storagearraysmighthave
additionalnetworkrequirements.
Therecoverysiteshouldhaveaccesstothesamepublicandprivatenetworksastheprotectedsite,though
notnecessarilythesamerangeofnetworkaddresses.
Installing and Configuring SRM
SRMincludesaservercomponentthatmustbeinstalledateachsiteandaclientpluginthatyoudownload
fromtheserverandinstallinavSphereClientthatyouusetomanageSRMservices.Figure 2illustratesa
typicalSRMinstallation.

2Attheprotectedsite,createprotectiongroups.Aprotectiongroupisacollectionofvirtualmachinesthat
allusethesamedatastoregroup(thesamesetofreplicatedLUNs)andfailovertogether .
3Attheprotectedsite,createinventorymapsforprotectedvirtualmachines.SRMenablesyo
utospecify
inventorypreferencesthatcontrolhowvirtualmachineresourcessuchasfolders,resourcepools,and
networksattheprotectedsitearemappedtosimilarresourcesattherecoverysite.Thisinventory
mappingensuresthatrecoveredvirtualmachinesareconfiguredproperlytopoweronandconnecttothe
netw

4Attherecoverysite,createoneormorerecoveryplans.Arecoveryplanisanautomatedrunbook:an
orderedsetofstepsthatcontrolwhathappensduringafailover.
