3. Safety instructions
Improper use of the scanner and accessories puts you and others at risk of danger and
may damage or destroy the scanner, so please read and observe strictly the following
safety instructions, hazard warnings and general warnings.
Purpose of use
The Film Scanner is intended for use in dry, enclosed spaces only. It is designed for
personal use and is not suitable for commercial applications.
Hazards for children and persons with limited ability to operate
electronic equipment
Film Scanner, accessories and packaging are not childrens toys! Please keep
children away from them. Hazards include the risk of electrocution, poisoning and
suffocation.
This equipment is not intended to be used by persons (including children) with
restricted physical, sensory or mental abilities or inadequate experience and/
or inadequate knowledge unless they are supervised, or instructed in the use of the
equipment, by an individual responsible for their safety.
Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the equipment.
Electrical hazard
If foreign objects or liquid have penetrated the Film Scanner, disconnect it from
the computer. Let everything dry thoroughly. Otherwise there is a risk of fire and
electrocution.
If the Film Scanner has fallen or the housing has been damaged, disconnect it from
the computer. Otherwise there is a risk of fire and electrocution.
The Film Scanner may not be taken apart, modified or repaired. There is a risk of
fire and electrocution.
Damage from heat –  re hazard
Do not allow the Film Scanner to be located in places where the temperature is
able to increase strongly (e.g. in a motor vehicle). This can cause damage to the
housing and internal parts, which in turn may cause fire.
4
Do not wrap anything around the Film Scanner and do not place it on top of
clothing or textiles. This can potentially cause a build-up of heat within the unit,
causing the housing to deform, and there is a risk of fire.
Injuries and material damage
Place the Film Scanner on stable, robust surfaces only. Otherwise the scanner may
fall down or fall over, becoming damaged and causing injury.
To avoid overheating, ensure adequate ventilation and do not cover up the Film
Scanner.
Do not place any open fire sources, such as burning candles, on or near the equipment.
Damage to the electronics brought about by external factors such as impact, falling
or other cause is not covered by warranty and therefore represents a chargeable
repair.
Do not insert the slide feeder or the negative holder from the left-hand side into the
scanners media opening, and do not pull the negative holder out of the unit to the
right! Damage so caused is not covered by the warranty!
Do not allow the Film Scanner to fall or be bumped and treat it with care at all
times. Otherwise it may become damaged.

4. Overview of device
Note:
This Film Scanner supports only Windows XP SP2 and above, Vista, Windows 7
and USB 2.0.
In the interests of getting clear images at all times, it is advisable to clean the
glass surface of the scanner’s media bay often using the cleaning brush (inclu-
ded) or a clean, dry cotton bud free of alcohol.

5. Inserting negatives
Open the negative holder at the position marked Open and place the holder, open-
ed, in front of you as shown below. Then place the negatives the usual way up (neither
turned nor upside down) into the recesses provided in the holder for this purpose. Use
the numbering on every negative strip as a guide.
Close the negative holder and press down on the edges until they click into place.
Then insert the negative holder into the Film Scanner from the right-hand side in such
a way that the white triangular marking is to the front and visible. Push the negative
holder into the Film Scanner until you can feel it click into the  rst negative position.
Note:
Always handle negatives with care. Dust, scratches and  ngerprints will all
be visible on the digital image. If possible, wear cotton gloves whilst handling
negatives. Use compressed air to remove dust from the negatives. A com-
pressed air unit is not included with the scanner but can be purchased in any
electronics or offi ce equipment store.
The design of the negative holder corresponds with ISO standards. In certain
cases the negative holes will not  t precisely onto the holder if non-standard
cameras have been used. In such cases a small black line will be visible at the
edge of the image. This line can be removed quite simply using a digital
image processing program.
7
6. Inserting slides
The supplied Film magazine can be used for slides of a variety of thicknesses up to a
maximum of 3.2 mm.
Before using the magazine it must be set to the thickness of the slides to be scanned.
Use the sliding button on the upper side of the slide feeder to choose from three
thicknesses (see picture):
1) Upper position: for cardboard-framed slides up to 1.0 mm
2) Middle position: for CS slides up to 2.3 mm
3) Lower position: for slides up to 3.2 mm
Insert slides into the opening in the magazine as shown below.
The magazine is then loaded into the scanner window- rst.
8
Note:
If the slide feeder is inserted into the scanner from the wrong side you will
damage the scanners protective  aps! Such damage cannot be repaired
under warranty!
Slides placed in the bay are pushed into the scanner one by one using the lever loca-
ted on the side of the slide feeder. To do this,  rst push the lever away from the scan-
ner all the way until it stops. Then move the lever carefully back towards the scanner.
The Film located inside the scanner is then removed from the unit, and a new slide is
pushed into the scanner’s viewing area.
Note:
Be sure to push a new slide slowly into the scanner. Doing this too abruptly
can cause the mechanism to jam. If this happens, pull the lever all the way
back and try again.
9
7. Removing dust from scanner optics
Open the NimoFilm program just as if you were going to scan in an image (see page 15).
Do not insert either the slide feeder or the negative holder into the scanner. You will
now see in the NimoFilm preview window where any dust has gathered. Switch, wi-
thin the program, between the “Slide” and “Negative” settings to detect further dirt or
dust. You can now remove the dust using the cleaning brush.
In order to get a clear image each time, we strongly advise that you clean the original-
image holders and the glass surface of the media bay regularly with the cleaning
brush (included) or a clean, dry cotton bud free of alcohol.
10
8. Installing the software
The program NimoFilm must be installed before using the Film Scanner.
Place the installation CD in your CD/DVD drive, and the installation CD menu will
appear automatically.
When the start-up screen appears, select “NimoFilm to install the software.
You will then be given general instructions for installing the software under Windows
XP, Vista and 7 (varies slightly from system to system).
11
3. Click “Next to continue
installation.
1. First, choose the language in
which the program should be
installed, then click “Next.
2. The installation procedure is
then prepared.
12
5. Choose the folder in which the
program should be installed, then
click “Next.
6. Click “Install” to install the
program.
4. Read the license agreement
before saying whether or not
you are in agreement with it.
Then click “Next.
13
7. The installation procedure is then
carried out.
8.
To complete the installation,
click “Finish, then remove the
installation CD from your drive
and re-boot the computer.
9. Once installed, the software automatically puts a
“NimoFilm symbol on your desktop.
14
9. Connecting the Film Scanner to your computer
Plug the scanner’s connector cable into one of your computers USB ports. The power
LED on the scanner will then light up in green.
The transparency scanner will only work on a USB port that supports USB 2.0. On desk-
top computers, such connection ports are usually located on the rear side. In the case
of laptops and notebooks, you may have to try out various USB ports to  nd a suitable
one. Because the USB systems on portable computers often do not carry suffi cient
power, it may be necessary to use a USB hub with its own power supply.
Note:
When used for the  rst time, the transparency scanner should be connected
without an original-image holder inserted, as the unit starts by calibrating
itself.
Note:
If “Error message 10” appears on the screen during installation of the scanner,
leave the unit plugged in and re-boot the computer.
15
10. Using the Film Scanner
On your systems desktop, double-click the NimoFilm icon to open the software.
To scan in images, select the folder – on the left-hand side of the screen – in which you
want the scanned images to be saved. The default setting is the “My Files/My Images”
folder.
16
On the “File drop-down menu, select “Capture”. This opens the “Photo preview” win-
dow which handles the scanning-in process.
Now place slides or negatives into the Film Scanner using the appropriate original-
image holder. The image is then displayed in the preview window showing how it will
look when scanned in.
Note:
Inserting the slide feeder or negative holder into the scanner from the wrong
side will damage the scanners protective  aps! Such damage cannot be
repaired under warranty! See Section 5 on page 6 (Inserting Negatives) and
Section 6 on page 7 (Inserting Slides).
17
The preview window then presents you with the following setting options:
Film Types
1) Positive: to scan in slides.
2) Negative: to scan in colour negatives.
3) Black-White: to scan in black-and-white negatives.
Resolution
1) 1800 dpi: This corresponds to the physical resolution of the scanner: images are
captured with 2.592 x 1.728 pixels.
2) 3600 dpi: The scanned image is interpolated to produce a higher resolution. Images
are captured with 5.184 x 3.456 pixels.
Note:
Upon scanning in, negatives are converted immediately into positive images.
Note:
Images captured with 3600 dpi have a higher resolution, but interpolation
does impair quality to an extent.
18
Colour settings
Select one of the pre-set colour settings “Nature”, “Colourful” or “Old Photo or choose
“Customize and create your own colour settings manually for the preview image by
moving the sliders to adjust exposure, brightness, contract and colour balance.
As soon as you have made all settings, the image can be scanned in – simply click on
“Capture”. The image is then scanned in and saved to the folder you speci ed.
Images digitalised using the scanner are saved in JPEG format and can be processed
afterwards using any digital image processing software.
Note:
If the image preview shows any patches or defects on the image to be scan-
ned:
Remove any dust from the slide or negative and from the scanner lens (see
page 9).
