GeneralOperation
Read,understand,andfollowallinstructionsonthe
machineandinthemanual(s)beforestarting.
Donotputhandsorfeetnearorunderthemachine.
Keepclearofthedischargeopeningatalltimes.
Onlyallowresponsibleadults,whoarefamiliarwiththe
instructions,tooperatethismachine.
Cleartheareaofobjectssuchasrocks,wire,toys,etc.,
whichcouldbethrownbytheblade.Staybehindthe
handlewhentheengineisrunning.
Besuretheareaisclearofbystandersbeforeoperating.
Stopmachineifanyoneentersthearea.
Donotoperatemachinebarefootedorwhilewearing
sandals.Alwayswearsubstantialfootwear.
Donotpullmachinebackwardunlessabsolutely
necessary.Alwayslookdownandbehindbeforeand
whilemovingbackward.
Neverdirectdischargedmaterialtowardanyone.Avoid
dischargingmaterialagainstawallorobstruction.
Materialmayricochetbacktowardtheoperator.Stopthe
bladewhencrossinggravelsurfaces.
Donotoperatemachinewithouttheentiregrasscatcher,
dischargeguard,rearguard,orothersafetyprotective
devicesinplaceandworking.
Neverleavearunningmachineunattended.
Stoptheengineandwaituntilthebladecomestoa
completestopbeforecleaningthemachine,removing
grasscatcher,oruncloggingthedischargeguard.
Operatemachineonlyindaylightorgoodarticiallight.
Donotoperatemachinewhileundertheinuenceof
alcoholordrugs.
Neveroperatemowerinwetgrass.Alwaysbesureof
yourfooting;walk;neverrun.
Disengagethedrivesystem,ifsoequipped,before
startingtheengine.
Ifthemachineshouldstarttovibrateabnormally,stop
theengineandcheckforthecauseimmediately.Vibration
isgenerallyawarningoftrouble.
Alwaysweareyeprotectionwhenoperatingmachine.
Lightningcancausesevereinjuryordeath.Ifyousee
lightningorhearthunderinthearea,donotoperatethe
machine;seekshelter.
Seemanufacturer'sinstructionsforproperoperationand

SlopeOperation
Slopesareamajorfactorrelatedtoslipandfallaccidents,
whichcanresultinsevereinjury.Operationonallslopes
requireextracaution.Ifyoufeeluneasyonaslope,donot
mowit.
Mowacrossthefaceofslopes;neverupanddown.
Exerciseextremecautionwhenchangingdirectionon
slopes.
Watchforholes,ruts,bumps,rocks,orotherhidden
objects.Uneventerraincouldcauseaslipandfall

Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipes,andothersources
ofignition.
Useonlyanapprovedgasolinecontainer.
Neverremovegascaporaddfuelwiththeengine
running.Allowenginetocoolbeforerefueling.
Neverrefuelthemachineindoors.
Neverstorethemachineorfuelcontainerwherethereis
anopename,spark,orpilotlightsuchasonawater
heateroronotherappliances.
Neverllcontainersinsideavehicleoronatruckor
trailerbedwithaplasticliner.Alwaysplacecontainerson
thegroundawayfromyourvehiclebeforelling.
Removegas-poweredequipmentfromthetruckortrailer
andrefuelitontheground.Ifthisisnotpossible,then
refuelsuchequipmentwithaportablecontainer,rather
thanfromagasolinedispensernozzle.
Keepthenozzleincontactwiththerimofthefueltank
orcontaineropeningatalltimesuntilfuelingiscomplete.
Donotuseanozzlelock-opendevice.
Iffuelisspilledonclothing,changeclothingimmediately.
Neveroverllfueltank.Replacegascapandtighten
securely.
WARNING
Exhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,anodorless,
deadlypoisonthatcankillyou.
Donotruntheengineindoorsorinanenclosed
area.

Neveroperatemachineinaclosedarea.
Keepallnutsandboltstighttobesuretheequipmentis
insafeworkingcondition.
Nevertamperwithsafetydevices.Checktheirproper
operationregularly.
Keepmachinefreeofgrass,leaves,orotherdebris
build-up.Cleanupoilorfuelspillageandremoveany
fuel-soakeddebris.Allowmachinetocoolbeforestoring.
Ifyoustrikeaforeignobject,stopandinspectthe
machine.Repair,ifnecessary,beforestarting.
Nevermakeanyadjustmentsorrepairswiththeengine
running.Disconnectthespark-plugwireandground
againstenginetopreventunintendedstarting.
Checkgrasscatchercomponentsandthedischargeguard
frequentlyandreplacewithmanufacturer'srecommended

immediatelystoptheengine,disconnectthewirefrom
thesparkplug,andexaminethemachinefordamage.
Forbestperformance,installanewbladebeforethe
cuttingseasonbegins.
ReplacethebladewhennecessarywithaLawn-Boy
replacementblade.
CuttingGrass
Cutonlyaboutathirdofthegrassbladeatatime.Donot
cutbelowthe2inch(51mm)settingunlessthegrassis
sparseoritislatefallwhengrassgrowthbeginstoslow
down.RefertoAdjustingtheCuttingHeight(page7).
Whencuttinggrassover6inches(15cm)tall,mowatthe
highestcuttingheightsettingandwalkslower;thenmow
againatalowersettingforthebestlawnappearance.If
thegrassistoolong,themachinemayplugandcause
theenginetostall.
Mowonlydrygrassorleaves.Wetgrassandleavestend
toclumpontheyardandcancausethemachinetoplug
ortheenginetostall.
WARNING
Wetgrassorleavescancauseseriousinjuryif
youslipandcontacttheblade.Mowonlyindry
conditions.
Alternatethemowingdirection.Thishelpsdispersethe
clippingsoverthelawnforevenfertilization.
Ifthenishedlawnappearanceisunsatisfactory,tryone
ormoreofthefollowing:
Replacethebladeorhaveitsharpened.
Walkataslowerpacewhilemowing.
Raisethecuttingheightonyourmachine.
Cutthegrassmorefrequently.
Overlapcuttingswathsinsteadofcuttingafullswath
witheachpass.
Setthecuttingheightonthefrontwheelsonenotch
lowerthantherearwheels.Forexample,setthefront
wheelsat2inches(51mm)andtherearwheelsat
2-1/2inches(64mm).

bladeisdamagedorcracked,replaceitimmediately.Ifthe
bladeedgeisdullornicked,haveitsharpenedorreplaceit.

Disconnectthewirefromthesparkplug.
Weargloveswhenservicingtheblade.
1.Disconnectthespark-plugwirefromthesparkplug.

2.Tipthemachineontoitsside,withtheairlterup.
3.Useablockofwoodtoholdthebladesteady.
4.Removetheblade(turnthebladebolt
counterclockwise),savingallthemounting
hardware.
5.Installthenewblade(turnthebladeboltclockwise)
andallmountinghardware(Figure20).

7.Installthesparkplugandtightenitwithatorque
wrenchto15ft-lb(20N-m).
8.Tightenallnuts,bolts,andscrews.
