3.1VerificationofBatteryFreePowerLossAlarm
Checktheconcentratorforproperoperatingconditions.
1.Iftheunithasbeeninbelow-freezingtemperatures,allowittowarmuptoroomtemperaturebeforeoperating.
2.TheconcentratormayneedtobeturnedonforfourtofivesecondstochargetheBatteryFreePowerLossAlarm.Connectpowercord
tooutletandturntheconcentratoron.TurnflowcontrolknobcounterclockwiseandflowwillbeginIMMEDIATELY.Setflowrate
tofiveL/min.Lettheunitrunfor30minutes,thenturnunitoff.
3.UnplugthepowercordandpressOn/Off(I/O)switchtotheOn(I)position.Anintermittentaudiblealarmwillsound.Thisconfirms
properoperationoftheBatteryFreePowerLossAlarm.TurnOn/OffswitchOff(O).
4.Connectpowercordtooutletandturnonconcentrator.Unitwillbeeponstart-up.
5.Checktheoxygenconcentrationperspecificationsafter30-40minutesrunningtime.
3.2SequenceofOperation
TurningOn(I)thepowerswitchapplies230VACtothecompressormotor,hourmeter,transformer,coolingfanandtheprintedcircuit
(P.C.)board.
Roomairentersthecompressorviathecabinetfilterandthecompressorinletfilter.TheairiscompressedbytheWob-Lpistonsinthe
compressortoapressureof144.79kPa(21p.s.i.).
Asincreasedpressurecreatesincreasedtemperature,aheatexchangerisusedtolowerthetemperaturebeforetheairentersthe4-way
valve.Itisthenchanneledtoasievebedcontainingtheadsorptionmaterial.Restrictiondownstreamofthesievebedcausespressureto
buildupinsidethesievebedwhichisnecessaryfortheadsorptionprocess.Asmallamountofrelativelypureoxygenentersthetopofthe
secondbedthrougharestrictiveleakinthepressureequalization(P.E.)valvewiththebalanceenteringastoragetank.Thenitrogenremoved
isexhaustedbackfromthebedthroughthe4-wayvalveintoroomair.Amufflerislocatedattheexhaustendofthevalvetomufflethe
soundoftheexhaustasitexitstheconcentrator.
Theoxygennotbeingusedtoexhaustischanneledintothestoragetank.Thepressurizedoxygenisregulateddownto5p.s.i.(34.4kPa),enters
anaccurateflow-measuringdevice,flowsthroughtheoutletHEPAfilterandcheckvalve,thenouttothepatient.
Theelectricalactivationofthe4-wayValveisaccomplishedevery8to15secondsbythepressuresensorandP.C.Boardelectronicswhenthe
pressurereachesasetpointof144.79kPa(21p.s.i.)outputflows4L/minandaboveor16p.s.i.(110.32kPa)outputflows3L/minandbelow.The
timebetweencyclesisdependentonaltitude,flowrateandinternalenvironmentalfactors.
AP.E.valveopensjustpriortotheshiftofthe4-wayvalve.Thisallowshighlyconcentratedoxygentoenterthejustexhaustedbedfromthetop.
Thisadditionalpressureallowsthebedtostartitscycleatahigherpressure.TheP.E.valvewillclosejustaftertheshiftofthe4-wayvalve.
Ifmainpowerislost,theBatteryFreePowerLossAlarmwillsoundashort"BEEP",withalongpauseafter.Allunitsareequippedwithadiagnostic
alarmsystemthatsignalsifthepneumaticpressureorelectricalsystemsmalfunction.Thetroubleshootingguideinthismanualexplainsthe
alarmsystemsignalsandreasons,indetail.RefertoTroubleshooting.

OxygenSensorTechnology-CeramicZirconiaSensor
3.3.1TechnicalDescription
Theoxygenbeingproducedbytheconcentratorflowsoutoftheproducttankandintotheflowmeter.Asmallflowofoxygenproducedbythe
unitissentthroughaprecisionorificetotheoxygensensormountedontheprintedcircuitboard.
Astheoxygenentersthesensor,itpassesthroughascreenandcontactsthesensingdisk.
Electriccurrentflowingthroughametalfilmresistorheatsthediskinexcessof300°C.
Oxygenmoleculescontacttheelectrodeofthediskandpick-upextraelectronstobecomeoxygenions.Theseoxygenionsareattractedto
theelectrodeonthebottomofthezirconiasensingdisk.Becauseofthecrystalstructureofthezirconia,onlyoxygenionscanpassthrough.
Whentheoxygenionsreachthebottomelectrode,theextraelectronsarereleasedfromtheoxygenionsandoxygenmoleculesreturntothe
air.Thenumberofelectronsisdirectlyrelatedtotheoxygenconcentration.TheelectronstraveltotheP.C.boardwheretheyarecounted
andtheoxygenconcentrationreadingiscalculated.
AmicroprocessorontheP.C.boardcontainssoftwarethatinterpretsthesignalbeingreceivedfromthesensor.Itcomparesthesignalto
clinicallyacceptablelimits.Signalsoutsideoftheclinicallyacceptablelimitsgenerateresponsesintheformoflights,audibleindicators,and/or
systemshut-down.
3.3.2OperatingSequence
OncethepowerswitchhasbeenturnedOn(I),theSensO
2
circuitwillwaitfiveminutesfortheconcentratortobeginproducingclinically
acceptableoxygenandtheoxygensensortostabilize.TheGREENlightwillilluminate(indicatingnormalsystemoperation)whiletheoxygen
sensoriswarmingup.
Afterfiveminutes,iftheoxygenpurityexceeds85%±2%,theGREENlightwillcontinuetoilluminate.

Iftheoxygenlevelisnotabove85%±2%withinthefirst30minutes,theoxygenconcentrationalarmsequencewillactivateandtheunit
willshutdown.
Whenoxygenconcentrationisabove85%±2%,thesensormeasuresoxygenpurityevery10minutes.Ifareadingfallsbelow85%±2%,a
YELLOWlightwillilluminate.Iftheoxygenpurityfallsbelow73%±3%theREDlight/Alarm/Shut-Downmodewillactivate.

Theconcentratorisequippedwithanoxygenpurityindicator.Thisfeaturemonitorsthepurityleveloftheoxygengeneratedbytheconcentrator.
Ifpurityfallsbelowalarmthresholds,indicatorlightsonthecontrolpanelwillilluminate.
Concentratormaybeusedduringtheinitialstartwarm-uptime(approximately30minutes)whilewaitingfortheO
2
puritytoreach
maximum.
Whentheunitisturnedon,theGREENlightwillcomeon(SYSTEMOK/O
2
greaterthan85%).Afterfiveminutes,theoxygensensorwillbe
operatingnormallyandwillcontroltheindicatorlightsdependingonoxygenconcentrationvalues.Theexplanationoftheindicatorlight

Toavoiddamagetotheinternalcomponentsoftheunit:
DONOToperatetheconcentratorwithoutthefilterinstalledorwithadirtyfilter.
Thereisonecabinetfilterlocatedonthebackofthecabinet.
1.RemovetheairscoopAfrombackofunit.
2.RemovethefilteraccesspanelBbypressingdownoncentertabCandpullingpanelout.
3.RemovecabinetfilterDfromfilteraccesspanelandcleanasneeded.
Environmentalconditionsthatmayrequiremorefrequentinspectionandcleaningofthefiltersincludebutarenotlimitedto:
highdust,airpollutants,etc.
4.Cleanthecabinetfilterwithavacuumcleanerorwashwithamildliquiddishdetergentandwater,rinsethoroughly.
5.Thoroughlydrythefilterandinspectfromfraying,crumbling,tearsandholes.Replacefilterifanydamageisfound.
6.Reinstallcabinetfilterontofilteraccesspanel
7.Reinstallfilteraccesspanelintounit.
8.Reinstallairscoopontobackofunit.
5.2CheckingtheOutletHEPAFilter
TheoutletHEPAfiltercanbecheckedduringpreventivemaintenanceorbetweenpatientsbyperformingthefollowingprocedure.
1.TurntheconcentratorOn(I)andadjusttheflowmetertothemaximumflowrateoftheunit.
2.Observetheflowmeter'sflowindicatorwhileconnectinga15.2m(50ft)cannulatubetotheoutletbarboftheconcentrator(notshown).

3.ForeasieraccesstotheoutletHEPAfilterA,removethecompressorinletHEPAfilterbygraspingthecompressorinletfilter,pulloutward
andupuntilfilterisdislodgedfromrubberbase.
4.Withaflatheadscrewdriver,removethetubingBfrombothsidesoftheexistingoutletHEPAfilterbypryingthetubingawayfrom
theoutletHEPAfilter.
5.DiscardexistingoutletHEPAfilter.
6.ConnecttubingtobothsidesofthenewoutletHEPAfilterasshownbelow.

6.Installnewcompressorinletfilterbyinsertingthefilterintotherubberbase.
7.Pushthefilterdownuntiltherubberbasetouchestheedgeofthefilter.
8.Reinstallthefilteraccesspanel.
9.Reinstalltheairscoop.
