The apparatus shall not be exposed to dripping or
splashing.
Do not damage the mains lead.
When not in use, disconnect the mains lead from the
outlet. Grasp the plug, not the cord, when disconnect-
ing the unit.
If water should enter the unit, electrical shock or a
malfunction may result. Use
in an area where there is
low humidity and little dust.
Do not disassemble or alter the unit in any way.
Do not use the unit in areas where extremes in tempera-
ture occur (below 5°C or exceeding 35°C), or where it
may be exposed to direct sunlight.
Because of the CD player’s extremely low noise and
wide dynamic range, there is a tendency to turn the
volume on the amplifier higher than necessary. Doing
so may produce an excessively high output from the
amplifier which can cause damage to your speakers.
Please be careful in this regard.
Sudden changes in the surrounding temperature can
cause dew to form on the optical pickup lens inside the
unit. Under this condition the unit may be unable to
operate properly. If this should occur, remove the disc
and allow the player to adjust to the surrounding
temperature.
Important Notes:
1) When positioning the unit for
use, be sure to place

it on a flat surface so that it does not tilt.
2) When carrying the unit from one location to
another .
- When moving the unit a short distance, such as I
from room to room, turn the power off and wait
at least 10 seconds for the CD changer mecha-
nism to reset.
- Lift the unit by the handle and besureto keep the
unit in a horizontal position.
3) When transporting the unit ...
- Remove all the discs from the unit.
Carrying the unit around with discs inside can
cause damage to the discs and may cause the
unit to malfunction.
- Press the POWER button to turn off the power
and wait at least 10 seconds for the CD changer
mechanism to reset before carrying the unit.

SPEAKER PLACEMENT

This unit features a detachable speaker system. The left
and right speaker enclosures can be detached from the
main unit, and placed where desired. When the speaker
enclosures are attached to the main unit, the MCH-S970F
can be carried to any location desired.
CONNECTING THE SPEAKERS
Speaker terminals (SPEAKERS)
These terminals will accept speakers with an impedance
of 3 to 8
ohms. The speaker wire should be connected to
the speaker terminals with the proper polarity. The red
terminal ispositive (+), andthe black terminal
is negative
(–). The speaker wire with white stripe is positive (+) and
the other is negative (–).

proper stereo reproduction will not be obtained.
Twist the two solid black wires together.
Push the terminal button and insert the speaker wire
into the opening.
Release the terminal button. The speaker wire is se-
cured.

Push the RELEASE lever as illustrated and push the
speaker enclosure toward the front.
Extend the speaker wire to the desired length.
Connect the speaker wire to the SPEAKERS terminals.
To attach the speaker enclosures
1. Push the SPEAKERS terminal button and
remove the
speaker wire.
2. Attach thespeaker enclosures to the main unit and slide
the speaker enclosures to the locked position.
3. Place the excess speaker wire onto the speaker wire
guide on the back of each speaker enclosure.
4. Connect the speaker wire to the SPEAKERS terminals.

The remote control emits an invisible infrared beam,
which carries the control signals to the sensor window on
the front panel of the unit. Because the infrared beam
travels in a straight line, the Transmitter Window on the
remote control must be pointed toward the infrared sen-
sor window on the unit. Make sure that there are no
objects between the remote control and the unit that
might block the beam.

Use the remote control within an angle of 15° to the left
and right horizontally and over distances up to approxi-
mately 7 meters.

Battery power operation
1. Open the battery compartment lid by pushing down
on the tabs.
2. Install 8 “D” size and 4 “AA/HP7/R6” size batteries.
Refer to the polarity diagram on the back of the unit.
Match the (+) and (–) marks on the diagram to the
(+) and (–) marks on the batteries.
3. Replace the lid.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
CD memory backup
4 “AA/HP7/R6” batteries are necessary to retain the
number of discs loaded, the program contents and
the repeat setting in memory when the power is
disconnected.
CAUTION
WHEN INSTALLING THE BATTERIES
To prevent leakage from the batteries, which is
corrosive and can cause personal injury and dam-
age to the unit, observe the following precautions:

This unit is designed to play compact discs bearing the
identification logo below. Discs that do not carry this logo
may not conform to the CD standard and may not play
properly.
This unit can be used to play 12 cm discs only.

COMPACT
DIGITAL AUDIO
Do not attempt to load a 8 cm disc with or without a
snap-on adaptor. Doing so may cause damage to the
disc and CD changer.
Fingerprints and dust should be carefully wiped off
the signal surface of the disc (glossy side) with a soft
cloth.
Wipe in a straight motion from the centre to the
outside of the disc.
Never use chemicals such as record cleaning sprays,
antistatic sprays or fluids, benzene orthinnerto clean
compact discs.
These chemicals will permanently damage the plastic
surface of the disc.
Always place the compact disc in the disc tray with the
label facing upward. Compact discs can be played on
only one side.
To remove a disc from itsstoragecase, press down on
the centre of the case and lift the disc out, holding it
carefully by the edges.
Discs should be returned to their cases after use to
protect them from dust and scratches.
To prevent warping the disc, do not expose it to direct
sunlight, high humidity or high temperatures for ex-
tended periods of time.
Do not apply paper or write anything on either side of
the compact disc. Sharp writing instruments, or the
inks used in some felt-tip pens, may damage the
surface of ‘he disc.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Sanyo compact disc changers have built-in error compen-
sation circuits to correct for minor manufacturing defects
in a disc. There are limits, however, to the amount of
correction possible.
In some cases, the CD changer may skip some tracks on a
disc during play. This problem may be caused by defects
(such as scratches) in the disc being played, which are too
large for the error compensation circuits to handle. If you
encounter this problem, check the operation of the CD
changer as follows, before having the unit serviced.
Play a new disc. If the CD changer operates normally,
the skipping problem is most likely due to a defective
disc.

any disc, using the remote control.
While a disc is being played, it is possible to switch
immediately to a particular track on the disc.
First select the disc to be played by pressing the DISC
SELECT button, then press TRACK NUMBER buttons.
Examples:
To start play from track 3, press TRACK NUMBER button

To play from track 10, press +10, then O.
To play from track 25, press +10 twice, then 5.
If atracknumber higher than the Iasttrack on the disc
is selected, the last track will be played.
Direct track selection is not possible in the program
play mode.
When using the controls on the front panel, select a
disc by pressing the DISC SELECTOR button (DISC 1
- DISC 6). Press the SKIP/SEARCH “ w “ or “ FM “
button to select the desired track to be played.
To begin play, press the PLAY/PAUSE button.
“REPEAT ALL” can be selected.
If the STOP/CLEAR or OPEN/CLOSE button is pressed,
the repeat mode is canceled.
The CDchanger remains intherepeat mode when the
POWER is turned off and on again.

Up to 32 selections, from up to 6 discs, can be pro-
grammed for play in any order.
Thesametrack ordisccan be programmed more than
once.
Load the discs that you want to program before
starting programmed play.
Programming procedure
Follow the example below to program tracks 2 and 6 on
DISC 1, track 9 on DISC 2 and all tracks on DISC 3.
In this example, each disc has 9 tracks and DISC 3 is
selected.

the disc, and the “ M/+ “ and “ */M “ buttons or

The maximum number of selections that can be pro-
grammed is 32. If you try to enter more selections,
“FULL” will appear on the display.
Checking the program

While in the stop mode, press the MEMORY button.
The disc, track and program numbers will appear on
the display.
Press the MEMORY button again to view the disc,
track and program numbers fortheother programmed
selections.
These displays do notappearduring programmed
play.
Press the PLAY/PAUSE button to start play.
When all programmed selections have played, the CD
changer stops automatically.
The program contents are retained in memory.
NOTE:
The program is cleared in the following cases:
When the OPEN/CLOSE button is pressed.
When the STOP/CLEAR button is pressed in the stop
mode.
When the mains lead has been disconnected and the
backup batteries are discharged or not installed.
Changing a program
To add a new selection to a program:
1. In the stop mode, press the MEMORY button repeat-
edly until the following display appears:

2. Select a disc and track number as explained above.
Note:
If you program a track on the disc that was pro-
grammed last, press the
“ M “ or “ m “ button to
select the track. The disc number will be selected
automatically.
To change a selection

tion to be replaced is displayed.
2. Select a disc and track number as explained above.

the FFWD or REW button will be released automatically.
Full automatic stop
This unit has a full-release stop system, to protect the tape
and prevent pinch roller damage. When the end of the
tape is reached in Playback, Recording, Fast forward or
Rewind, the tape mechanism will stop automatically.
HELPFUL HINTS
Safeguards against accidental erasure
Whenever a recording is made, the sound previously
recorded is automatically erased. To protect valuable
recordings from accidental erasure, the unit and cassette
are equipped with standard safety features. To keep re-
corded material permanently, break out the tab(s) on the
back of the cassette with a screwdriver.
To protect side A, breakout tab(l). To protect side B, break
out tab(2).
NOTE:
A cassette with the erase guard tabs removed cannot
be erased or used for recording and the REC button
cannot be depressed. To record or erase a protected
cassette, cover the tab openings with adhesive tape

MAINTENANCE
Cleaning the unit
Clean the outside of the unit with a clean soft cloth,
moistened with lukewarm water and wrung dry. Do not
use solvents such as benzene or thinner. These will per-
manently damage the units finish.
Cleaning the tape heads
When dust or reddish-brown oxide builds up on the tape
deck heads, pinch roller and capstan, the following prob-
lems may result:
Poor sound quality during playback
Distorted, poor quality recordings
Erratic tape speed during recording or playback
