You can record onto the second layer of dual- or double-layer discs after closing the first layer.
DVD-R, etc. recorded on this unit cannot be played on other players
the Finalize feature allows you to play these discs on other players. (However, once the disc is finalized
you will no longer be able to record to the disc.)

Formatting
If using an unformatted disc, you must format it before the first
recording. After inserting the disc, the formatting message appears
automatically. Formatting prepares the media, such as a
recordable DVD-RAM, for recording. All data is irreversibly erased.
