AIM104-IN16 Technical Manual Introduction
© 2007 Eurotech Ltd Issue F 4
Introduction
The AIM104-IN16 is an 8-bit PC/104 module providing 16 opto-isolated inputs. The
module provides electrical isolation of up to 1500V between your PC/104-based control
system and the electrical system you are monitoring. The isolation between adjacent
channels is limited to 100V by the wiring and connectors.
The board includes jumper options for each channel to use the on-board supply, and
jumpers to select a 10ms input debounce filter.
Variants
There are two variants of this board:
AIM104-IN16 : Module inputs driven by an external power source.
AIM104-IN16-DC/DC : Module fitted with a +24V isolated DC/DC converter to
provide excitation supply.
Features
Input switching voltage range: 10V to 30V.
Maximum input frequency: Filter disabled: 10KHz.
Filter enabled: 50Hz.
Input switching time (at 24v): Filter disabled: Switching ON: 5μs.
Switching OFF: 50μs.
Filter enabled: Switching ON: 10ms.
Switching OFF: 5ms.
All inputs include reverse input protection diodes.
Module access LED (on all decoded addresses).
8-bit PC/104 (IEEE996) bus interface.
Operating temperature range: -20°C to +70°C.
Power consumption from the PC/104 host:
- AIM104-IN16: max 100mA.
- AIM104-IN16-DC/DC: max 500mA with all inputs ON.
MTBF (using generic figures from MIL-HDBK-217F at ground benign):
- AIM104-IN16: 607,000hrs.
- AIM104-IN16-DC/DC: 215,000hrs.

Handling your board safely
Anti-static handling
This board contains CMOS devices. These could be damaged in the event of static
electricity being discharged through them. Observe anti-static precautions at all times
when handling circuit boards. This includes storing boards in appropriate anti-static
packaging and wearing a wrist strap when handling them.
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
The AIM104-IN16 is classified as a ‘component’ with regard to the European
Community EMC regulations and it is the user’s responsibility to ensure that systems
using the board are compliant with the appropriate EMC standards.
The opto-isolation provides a good barrier for noise emissions generated by the high
frequency host PC/104 system. The AIM104-IN16 includes additional filter components
on-board to minimise the emissions of high frequency noise. Because of this, the earth
tab supplied with the module must be connected to the chassis of the system by a
good earth wire.
If the electronic system requires input protection against high voltage transients (to
meet CE requirements), it is recommended that an external interface board is located
at the point where the external wiring enters the electronic system enclosure:
Packaging
Should a board need to be returned to Eurotech Ltd, please ensure that it is
adequately packed, preferably in the original packing material.
RoHS compliance
The European RoHS Directive (Restriction on the Use of Certain Hazardous
Substances – Directive 2002/95/EC) limits the amount of six specific substances within
the composition of the product. The AIM104-IN16 is available as an RoHS-6 compliant
option and is identified by an -R6 suffix in the product order code. A full RoHS
Compliance Materials Declaration Form is included in
Appendix B – RoHS-6
Compliance - Materials Declaration Form
, page 16. Further information about RoHS
compliance is available on the Eurotech Ltd web site:
www.eurotech-ltd.co.uk

What items are provided?
The AIM104-IN16 is supplied with the following items:
The AIM104-IN16 or AIM104-IN16-DC/DC board.
Mounting kit.
Getting started
Unpacking and connecting up
To begin using the AIM104-IN16 board, follow these steps:
1 Power down your computer.
2 Install the board in a spare PCI slot.

website:
www.eurotech-ltd.co.uk/en/downloads.
AIM104-IN16 Technical Manual Operation

Operation
The status of each input is read from two I/O addresses: the base address and base
address +1. Although the board decodes four read-only byte locations, the address
locations 2 and 3 are a repeat of locations 0 and 1. When an input channel is switched
ON, the value read by the host is a 0. Each input is configured as follows:
Address Register name Bit functions
Base read Channel status 0-7 Bit 0-7 1=OFF 0=ON
Base read +1 Channel status 8-15 Bit 0-7 1=ON 0=OFF

Use LK1 to set the base address of the module. Inserting a jumper selects a 0 for the
address line value.

Power supply selection
The isolated supply may be sourced from either the on-board DC/DC converter or an
external supply. This is shown below:
Ensure LK2 is removed if you are using an external supply. Damage may
occur if both are connected at the same time.

AIM104-IN16 Technical Manual Common positive input selection
© 2007 Eurotech Ltd Issue F 12
Common positive input selection
You can insert a jumper to connect the positive input of each channel to the positive
side of the common isolated supply.
This reduces the number of wire connections, since only one side of the input (-ve)
requires an external connection. To switch ON the input, the -ve input terminal should
be switched to the isolated 0v.
