J Seat
Adjustment
To move a front seat forward or back-
ward,

Release
the handle to latch the seat in its
new position.
Make sure the seat locks securely in
place.
*Some models.
WARNING
Drivers Seat Adjustment:
Adjusting

cle is stopped.
WARNING

Essential
Safety Equipment
2-3
Make
sure the lever returns to its original
position.
Lifting
this lever (when a seat is
unoccu
-
pied)
allows the seatback to fold forward
for access to the rear seat.
WARNING
Reclining:
Sitting in a reclined position in a
moving vehicle can be dangerous
because you don’t get the full pro-
tection
from seat belts. In a
collision
or
sudden stop, you can slide under
the
lap belt and suf
fer serious i
nter-
nal injuries. For maximum protec-
tion, sit well back and upright.
WARNING
Upright Seatbacks:
Rear seat passengers should not
lean
on the front
seatback while the
vehicle is in motion. A seatback
which is folded forward even a
small
degree may not lock properly
in the event of a sudden stop or
collision.
Do not allow packages
or
other objects to interfere with the
normal positions of the seatback
or the seat recline lever. This may
prevent the seatback from locking
in the event of a sudden stop or
collision and could cause personal
injury.

WARNING
Installing a Child Seat in the

intended for this purpose.
Seat
belts help decrease the possibility or
severity of injury during accidents and
sudden stops. Mazda recommends that
the
driver and passengers wear seat belts
at all times.
J Energy
Management Featur
e
This vehicle has a seat belt system with
an energy management feature at the
front outboard seating positions to help
further reduce the risk of injury in the
event of a head-on collision.
This seat belt system has a retractor
assembly that is designed to pay out
webbing in a controlled manner. This
feature is designed to help reduce the
belt
force acting on the occupant’
s chest.
Essential
Safety Equipment
2-6
NOTE
After any vehicle collision, the seat
belt system at all outboard seating
positions (except driver, which has
no “automatic locking retractor”
feature)
must be checked by a quali
-
fied technician to verify the no
“automatic locking retractor” fea-
ture
for child seats is still functioning
properly in addition to other checks
for
proper seat
belt system function.
WARNING
Belt and retractor assembly must
be replaced if the seat belt system
“automatic locking retractor” fea-
ture or any other seat belt function
is not operating properly when
checked
according to procedures in
the workshop manual. Failure to
replace the belt and retractor
assembly could increase
the risk of
injury in collisions.
J Emergency
Locking Mode
The emergency locking mode is the
normal retractor mode, allowing free
shoulder belt length adjustment to your
movements and locking in response to
vehicle movement. For example, if the
driver brakes suddenly or turns a corner
sharply,
