Introduction
This manual describes Emulex
®
LP21000 and LP21002, multi-protocol PCI-Express Converged
Network Adapters (CNAs) for a 10 Gigabit Enhanced Ethernet (EE) fabric. Emulex CNAs provide both
traditional networking interface card (NIC) functionality and host-bus-adapter (HBA) functionality, as well
as Fibre Channel over Ethernet(FCoE) functionality for convergence of Fibre Channel traffic onto 10
Gigabit EE fabric.
Emulex CNAs combine four major functional components: a 10G networking MAC, a Fibre Channel IOC,
a PCI-express-switch (to bridge between the MAC and IOC), and a bridge chip that interconnects the
10G MAC and Fibre Channel IOC and interfaces with a unified lossless Ethernet switch. The CNA
serves as a common interface for both storage and IP traffic retaining familiar Fibre Channel and
networking software stacks, OS drivers, and management. The supported PCIe connector is x8 or
higher. Each CNA is compliant to the PCI Express Base Specification 1.1.
Major Features
Available in four different models:
LP21000-M single port with Optics
LP21002-M dual port with Optics
LP21000-C single port with Copper
LP21002-C dual port with Copper
Single 8-lane standard Gen 1, PCIe interface shared by the Fibre Channel and MAC controllers
through an IDT 3-port PCIe switch.
Standard PCIe form factor PCBA; full height, 9.1" long.
10 GbE Network interface connections using optics or copper.
On-board flash memory: 8M bytes for Fibre Channel controller program storage, 1M byte for
FCoE Bridge program storage, and 128K bytes for PXE Ethernet boot.
On-board configuration EEPROM for the Ethernet MAC and FCoE Bridge.
Uses standard Emulex SLI drivers.
Interoperates with existing Fibre Channel SAN infrastructures - switches, arrays, SRM tools
(including Emulex utilities), SAN practices, etc.
Unified Ethernet to Fibre Channel SAN connectivity provided by FCoE switch.
Provides 10G MAC features such as MSI-X support, Jumbo frames support (16K bytes), VLAN
tagging (802.1Q, PER priority pause / priority flow control), and advance packet filtering.
No host operating system changes required - i.e. NIC and HBA functionality (including device
management, utilities, etc.) transparent to the host operating system.
Target Systems: Tier-1 OEM rack servers of all form-factors (with PCI-Express)

Compatibility
Note: Support for Solaris (Leadville) is provided for FCoE only. The Ethernet drivers will be made available as soon
as they are supported by Solaris.
Prerequisites
PCI-Express 1.0a compliant systems: x8 lane transfer link interface at 2.5-Gb/s per lane.
Single 8-lane standard Gen1, PCIe slot is required for operation.

Installing the Converged Network Adapter
The Emulex LP21000 and LP21002 converged network adapters (CNAs) use removable optical
transceivers. If you need to change the bracket for CNA installation, you must first remove the
transceivers from the housing (cage). This document explains how to install the CNA and, if necessary,
how to remove the transceivers and bracket safely.
To install a CNA:
1. Each CNA is shipped with a unique 64-bit identifier called the IEEE address. The Fibre Channel
industry uses a World Wide Name (WWN) derived from the IEEE address, and this number is
needed for Fibre Channel connectivity. A CNA can have one or two 10 Gigabit physical ports.
IEEE addresses are assigned for each port, and are used when configuring your system. The
serial number is used when communicating with Emulex. All numbers are clearly marked on the
board. We recommend that you record these numbers before installation.
2. Turn off and unplug the computer.
3. Remove the computer case.
4. Remove the blank pane from an empty PCIe bus slot bus slot. Follow steps 5-8 to change the
brackets if they are different sizes. Otherwise, skip to step 9.
5. Remove the mounting bracket screws from the top of the CNA.
6. Remove the bracket and store it for future use.
7. Align the new mounting bracket tabs with the appropriate holes in the CNA.
8. Replace the screws that attach the CNA to the bracket.
9. Insert the CNA into the empty x8 PCIe bus slot. Press firmly until the adapter is seated.
10. Secure the CNA's mounting bracket to the case with panel screw or clip.
11. Replace the computer case and tighten case screws.
The CNA is now installed in the server and is ready for media attachment.
Note: Place the CNA into an empty PCIe x8 slot. Make sure that the adapter is in an
appropriate PCIe slot that does not interfere with other components or case to
prevent damaged to the CNA.
Note: Be careful not to push the bracket past the transceiver housing's grounding tabs.
Make sure the light emitting diodes (LEDs) are properly aligned with the holes in the
bracket.

Attaching Media
Note: A CNA will not allow normal data transmission on either 10 Gig optical or copper link unless it is connected to
a similar or compatible optical or copper interface connection (that is, multimode to multimode).
Use SR, DCR multimode fiber, or 3m twin-axial copper for interface connections to network that adheres
to the following specifications:
To attach media to the CNA:
1. Connect the cable to the LC connectors on the CNA.
2. Connect the other end of the cable to a Top of Rack (TOR) EE switch. See figure 1.
Figure 1: Connecting Fiber Optic or Copper Cable
After the media is connected to the CNA, you are ready to apply power to the computer.

Applying Power
To apply power:
1. Verify that the CNA is securely installed in the computer.
2. Verify that the correct media is attached.
3. Plug in and turn on the computer.
4. Observe LEDs for Power On Self Test (POST) results.
Viewing the LEDs
Green and yellow LEDs can be seen through openings in the CNA's mounting bracket. Each
corresponding LED is summarized below:
10GbE Green (Ethernet Link)
ON Solid = Link up
ON/OFF Intermittent = Activity
OFF = No Link
Yellow (Adapter status; standard Emulex)
Green (Adapter status; standard Emulex)
Figure 2: CNA LED Indicators
POST Conditions and Results
POST (Power on Self Test) conditions and results are summarized in the following table:
Note: For the Fibre Channel Link Rate conditions, there is a 1 Hz pause when the LED is
off between each group of fast blinks (1,2 or 3). You should observe the LED
sequence for several seconds to ensure that the pause is correctly identified.
