WILLIAMS CLASSIC SERIES GAS LOG SETS
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Do not use this log set if any part has been under
water. Immediately call a qualified service technician
to inspect the appliance and to replace any part of
the control system and any gas control which has
been under water.
The gas log set must be isolated from the gas sup-
ply piping system by closing its individual shut-off
valve during any pressure testing of the gas supply
system at test pressures equal to or less than 1/2
psig. The gas log set and its individual shut-off valve
must be disconnected from the gas supply piping
system when testing at pressures in excess of 1/2
psig.
Keep the area of the gas log set clear and free from
combustible materials, gasoline and other flammable
vapors and liquids.
MAINTENANCE: Periodically remove the logs and
examine the burner assembly. If dirty, clean with a
stiff brush. Also examine the area around burner air
shutter, and pilot. Any dirt or lint in this area should
be removed. This will insure long life and trouble-
free operation. An annual inspection and cleaning
of the vent system by a qualified agency is recom-
mended.
The minimum inlet gas supply pressure for the pur-
pose of input adjustment is 5" for Natural Gas and
1 1" for Propane Gas. The maximum inlet gas supply
pressure for this burner is 14" for Natural and Pro-
pane Gas.
A fireplace screen must be in place when the log set
is burning. Unless other provisions for combustion
air are provided, the screen shall have an opening(s)
for introduction of combustion air. When a glass fire-
place enclosure (door) is used, operate the gas log
set with the glass doors open.
The minimum size fireplace in which the log set is
certified to be installed, is listed in theTechnical Data
Table below. To center the log set in the fireplace, an
additional 2" to 3" in rear width is recommended.

HOW TO INSTALL YOUR WILLIAMS CLASSIC GAS LOG SET
The Williams Classic Gas Log Set must be installed by a qualified technician.
Instructions must be followed carefully to insure proper performance and full
benefit from your gas log set.
Williams Classic Gas Logs must be installed only in
a wood burning fireplace with the minimum venting
requirements met (see Pg. 3). Check parts list to be
sure all parts are included. Gas supply pipe must be
I/2" or larger. Use 3/4" if the gas line is longer than 20'.
REFER TO PARTS LIST (PAGE 4, 5) WHEN
FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
EMBER PLACEMENT
Sprinkle embers (Item 11) lightly and evenly over
entire surface of the granules or vermiculite. Replace
the grate so that bottom tabs on the Iog-locator
brackets fit over the back edge of the pan locking it
in position.
INSTALLATION OF LOG SET (be sure gas
to the fireplace is off)
1. Remove grate (Item 7) from carton and attach log
Iocators (Item 10) to the two outer bars of the grate
with bolts and nuts. Log Iocators should be posi-
tioned at the middle of the bars with the two taller pins
facing the front.
2. Connect nipple (item 38) to regulator inlet. Attach
the smaller elbow from connector kit (item 15) to the
opposite end of the nipple and tighten.
3. Place the burner assembly (item 8) into the fire-
place so the open burner pan faces to the room.
4. Place the grate (item 7) over the burner pan (item
8) so the log Iocator brackets (item 10) fit over the
back edge of the burner pan to lock it in position.
5. Center this assembly in the fireplace and place as
far back in the fireplace as possible. Remove grate
(item 7) for gas connection and granule placement.
6. Connect larger elbow from connector kit (item 15)
to gas supply. Using connector kit tubing, connect
gas supply to the small connector elbow on the
regulator (installed in step 2).
7. Turn on the gas to the fireplace and test for leaks
with soapy water solution. (Never use open flame for
testing).
GRANULE OR VERMICULITE PLACEMENT
With the burner off and grate removed, fill the burner
pan completely with granules or vermiculite (Item
12). Slope the granules or vermiculite at the same
angle as burner pan. Note: Use vermiculite only
when your log set is fueled by propane gas. Do not
use granules with a propane gas log set.
Example of burner flame pattern
LOG PLACEMENT
Proper log placement is important to insure proper
performance of your Williams Classic Gas Log Set.
Be sure to follow log placement instructions careful-
ly. Optional log placement patterns, are explained on
page 7.
PLACEMENT OF BOTTOM LOGS
Place the front and rear bottom logs on the grate (Fig.
1). The longest log is placed in front. The log Iocators
insure that adequate space between the logs are
maintained for a cleaner burn.

FOR YOUR READ BEFORE LIGHTING
WARNING: Ifyou do not follow these instructions exactly, a fire or explosion may
result causing property damage, personal injury or loss of life.
The Williams Classic Gas Log Set has a pilot which
must be lit by hand. When lighting the pilot, follow
these instructions exactly.
1. BEFORE LIGHTING, smell all around the gas
log set area for gas. Be sure to smell next to the floor
because some gas is heavier than air and will settle
on the floor.
If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire
department.
2. Use only your hand to push in or turn the gas
control knob. Never use tools. If the knob will not
push in or turn by hand, don't try to repair it. Call a
qualified service technician. Force or attempted re-
pair may result in fire or explosion.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS

Do not touch any electrical switch, do not use any
phone in your building.
Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor's
phone. Follow the gas supplier's instructions.
3. Do not use the gas log set if any part has been
under water. Immediately call a qualified service
technician to inspect the gas log set and to replace
any part of the control system and any gas control
which has been under water.

and the pilot will remain lit.
2. If complete shutdown is desired, from the "PILOT" position, push in the control knob slightly and turn
clockwise _ to the "OFF" position. Do not force the knob.
PLACEMENT OF MIDDLE AND TOP LOGS
Option 1: Place the two middle logs on the bottom
logs. The knotholes of the middle logs are placed
over the front pins of the log Iocators, with the
opposite ends crossed, resting on the back bottom
log (Fig, 2). Top logs are placed with one end resting
on the knothole of the middle logs and one end
resting on the top of the front bottom log (Fig. 3).
Figure 4
Option 3: Reverse the log Iocator on one side so
that the longer pin is toward the back of the log set
(Fig. 5). Place the middle logs so they are parallel,
resting on the bottom logs with the knotholes cover-
ing the pins. Place the top logs parallel to each other
across the middle logs (Fig 6).

PILOT BURNER ADJUSTMENT
The pilot burner is preset at the factory and should
normally not require any adjustment. However, should
adjustment be necessary, the following steps should
be taken:
With the pilot burner lit and the control knob in the
pilot position, remove phillips head screw (item 29)
and heat shield face (item 26). Carefully remove the
cap screw located on the control valve (see Figure
10). Using a long narrow screwdriver, turn the pilot

adjustment screw (located under the cap screw)
slowly clockwise to reduce the flame, or counter-
clockwise to increase the flame. The adjustment
screw can be turned so that the pilot flame is com-
pletely extinguished. The pilot flame should be a
quiet soft blue flame with yellow tipping which encir-
cles the thermocouple tip.
Reassemble the cap screw and gasket to the valve
body, insuring that the cap screw and gasket are
firmly seated on the valve body. Replace heat shield
face (item 26) and phillips head screw (item 29). Turn
the control knob to the "on" position to assure proper
ignition of the log set.

DAMPER STOP CLAMP INSTRUCTIONS
The Damper Stop Clamp with hex bolt (Fig. 11 ) is
_rovided as a means to prevent full closure of the
damper blade. The clamp is easily attached to most
damper blades with pliers or wrench, and must be
permanently instaLled. The clamp is designed to
prevent accidental closure of the damper when in-
stalled as illustrated (Figs. 12 and 13). Should the
clamp not fit, or fail to provide the permanent vent
opening listed in the table found on page 2, have a
)ermanent stop installed, remove the damper blade
or have the damper cut to provide the minimum
)ermanent opening required.
