component system installed by an authorized dealer! This manual assumes that
the installer has in-depth knowledge and experience installing high quality compo-
nent speaker systems!
Please read this manual carefully! It is suggested to retain this manual and the
purchase receipt - as well as the original carton - for possible future use.
If, after reading this manual, you still have questions regarding this product, we

INTRODUCTION
This owner's manual provides detailed information on the features, installation
and adjustment of this 3-way Radical Audio component system. The RA163.3
separate is a high performance component loudspeaker set. To reach optimum
performance i.e. best sound reproduction quality, we strongly recommend to have
this system installed by a skilled professional installer. If you plan on to install this
system yourself, please be sure to read the entire manual before attempting the
installation!

INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS
GENERAL SUGGESTIONS
aMake sure you have enough high quality speaker wire at hand, to reach all the drivers
and crossovers from their intended mounting locations! The preferable cross-section is
2x2.5mm2. Please consider that for quality reasons, only the tweeter and midrange
extension leads are provided with the set content. All other speaker wires - especially
those to connect the mid/woofers and the amplifier to the crossover(s) - must be
purchased separately from your Radical Audio dealer.
sBefore you attempt to mount the tweeter(s), midrange unit(s) or mid/woofer(s) in the
doors of a vehicle, check the available mounting depth! Always make sure the speakers
or crossovers do not interfere with either the door or window operation.
dBefore you start any wiring work, speaker mounting etc, disconnect the negative power
cable lead from the battery! For your safety…
fNever run speaker wires over or through sharp edges. Use rubber grommets to protect
wires routed through metal.
MOUNTING LOCATION
A solid front stage with good imaging is one of the most difficult things to achieve in a
vehicle! Mostly because the speakers are placed where they will fit easily, as opposed
where they can perform the best. In most cases, the factory cut-outs - i.e. in the front
doors of a vehicle - offer a stable and convenient mounting platform for the mid/woofers.
In some cases you will need to purchase car specific plastic adaptors for proper mounting
of Euro-DIN style mid/woofers to the factory speaker cut-outs in the front doors.
Concerning the tweeters and the midrange units, the chosen mounting location will defini-
tely exhibit a profound and direct effect on the sound staging of your component speaker
system. Therefore, after mounting the mid/woofers and crossovers - try to mount the
midrange units as far to the front and as high as possible in the front doors, while the
tweeters should be located relatively close to the midrange units, preferably in the window
triangles or the A-pillars. Before the tweeters are mounted, it is recommended to fix them
with carpet tape - in several potential locations - to determine the best sounding location.
Of course this must be attempted, BEFORE YOU CUT YOUR PANELS!
SOME MOUNTING GUIDELINES:
aPlace the tweeters and midrange units where they have a direct - unobstructed - path
to the listening area. The best visual location may not be the best sounding one!
sListen to the system with both tweeters connected to the crossovers in phase
(to , to ) AND reversed, before making a final decision!
dBe sure to use the supplied foam gaskets when mounting the mid/woofers. These
gaskets enable an airtight seal between the mid/woofer mounting rim and the speaker
mounting hole, important to obtain the maximum dynamic range in the lower transmis-
sion band!
fThe installation of your component set is carried out best, following this logical
sequence: Removal of Factory Speakers zWire Routing zInstallation of the

MID/WOOFER INSTALLATION
You can install the Radical Audio mid/woofers directly into the factory speaker mounting
holes, because their Euro-DIN basket bolt hole configuration will fit to a great variety of
European and Asian cars.
Caution: Before installation, be sure that the mid/woofers will not interfere with the front
window or door mechanism!
aRemove the plastic grille (front door) and unscrew the factory installed 13cm or 16cm
fullrange speaker unit.
sPlace the Radical Audio Inc. mid/woofer over the mounting hole and see if the existing
screw mounting holes and the basket mounting holes align properly. If not, you have to
drill new screw mounting holes!
dIf the available clearance between the surround of the mid/woofer and the original
factory plastic grilles is big enough, you can use the "mass-reactance" steel rings
supplied with this set. The rings are "sandwiched" between the mounting hole and the
mid/woofer unit. The advantage is a totally even/level mounting surface, as well as a
considerably increased mass-reactance, audibly reducing unwanted panel vibrations.
fAttach the wires to the mid/woofer unit. Double-check for correct speaker polarity!
Place the speaker into the hole and screw the speaker into place. Don't forget to use
the supplied foam gasket for an airtight seal! Attention: Be careful not to bend
the mid/woofer speaker frame when tightening up the screws! The
plastic injection basket may break if the underground is not level or the
mounting screws are tightened up unsymmetrically!
gRemount the factory plastic grilles. While doing this, check for the clearance between
surround and backside of the grille. At least 6mm of clearance - e.g. distance of
surround to any part inside the plastic grille - is necessary! This allows for proper cone
travel of the mid/woofer. If necessary, cut off plastic parts or reinforcement ribs that
could interfere with surround or cone, when the speaker is in use.
MIDRANGE INSTALLATION
You can install the Radical Audio midrange unit directly into the factory dash board cutout
or else, to cut-outs in the front doors, using either one of both supplied adaptor rings.
CCaauuttiioonn::Before installation, be sure that the midrange units will not interfere with the front
window or door mechanism!
Pre-assemble the midrange unit, by attaching the metal clamps to the speaker. You will
need four clamps for each midrange speaker, and the clamps can be attached as follows:
Click the clamp onto the small rim on the front side of the midrange unit and gently push
down the clamp until it snaps in. Repeat this step for the other three clamps to form a
cross. This pre-assembled midrange unit can now be inserted into the chosen mounting
adapter ring according to the way of mounting. You can now mount the unit to the dash
board, or as described in detail below, into the front doors:
aRemove the panel you are going to install the midrange unit, to check for proper
clearance behind it. The mounting location for the midrange speaker shall be as much
in front and as high as possible. Mark the main cut-out. The midrange unit with flat
surface mount adapter ring will require a clearance of 30mm behind the panel! Make
sure there are no obstructions behind the spot you choose.
sNow cut a hole with a diameter of 76 mm, for example using a hole-saw attachment for
your power drill.

dHold the RA50.3M midrange speaker into the mounting hole and mark the four moun-
ting holes for the screws with a water proof Edding marker or a pencil.
fDrill the holes with a power drill, using a 3 mm drill bit. Attach the midrange speaker
wires to the RA50.3M speaker unit. Hold the speaker in place and fix it with the provi-
ded four self tapping screws contained in the mounting hardware kit.
gNow fix the metal grille to the mounting rim. Done!
CROSSOVER WIRING
aWire the crossover unit as shown in the schematic diagram shown overleaf. Be sure to
maintain speaker polarity at the input/output terminals of the crossover!
sThe transparent cover of the x-over housing can be pushed back to gain access to the
screw mounting holes and the jumpers for tweeter/midrange attenuation inside the
housing. For midrange and tweeter level adjustments, see chapter "FINE TUNING OF
MIDRANGE/ TWEETER LEVELS", page 19.
dFix the crossover in place with the provided self-tapping screws - avoiding the exposure
of the crossovers to water, excess humidity or other fluids.
fWhen you have determined the best tweeter locations, the tweeter level can be
attenuated by a jumper located inside the crossover housing. Therefore the crossovers
must remain accessible!

TWEETER INSTALLATION
The tweeter units come with two different mounting adaptors, suitable for flat surface of
flush mounting. After you have checked which tweeter location in your vehicle offers best
staging and smooth midrange reproduction, you can finally install the tweeters:
FLAT SURFACE MOUNTING
aUsing the flat bayonet lock base as a template, mark the two screw holes and drill
them by using a 3 mm drill bit. Secondly, mark and drill the 6 mm hole for the tweeter
lead wire to get through the panel.
sMount the flat tweeter adapter base to the panel using the two self-tapping screws
provided with the mounting hardware set.
dRun the speaker wire included in the speaker wire kit from the crossover to the flat
adapter base. Connect the tweeter main wire to the wire extension coming from the
crossover.
fMount the main tweeter unit to the flat base by inserting the tweeter into the conical
mounting ring. Place this unit over the adaptor base, turning the tweeter clockwise.
This locks the tweeter unit in place.
FLUSH MOUNTING
aRemove the panel you are going to install the tweeter, to check for proper clearance
behind it. The flush mount kit is 16 mm deep, so make sure there are no obstructions
behind the spot you choose.
sMark the centre of the spot and cut a hole with a diameter of 40 mm, for example
using a hole-saw attachment for your power drill.
dMount the spring bar to the flat bayonet lock base with the M4 metrical screw
included in the hardware set.
fAssemble the tweeter by inserting the main unit from the backside to the flush mount
cup. Insert this unit into the hole you have cut, then lock the spring/flat base with the
tweeter unit by turning the flush mount cup clockwise.
gConnect the speaker wire extension to the main leads.
hRemount the doorpanel, window triangle etc.
jYou can now pinpoint the tweeter to the desired direction.

FINE TUNING OF MIDRANGE/TWEETER LEVEL
aThe tweeter level can be set to three different attenuation levels, to compensate for
different mounting locations of the tweeters and - of course - to suit personal taste.
sSlide back the transparent cover of the crossover unit and set the preferred
attenuation level by adjusting the jumper on the circuit board.
dThe same procedure can be applied to the midrange level, where two different
attenuations can be selected. The 0dB level is the default setting, providing linear
response of your system. The -3dB setting is for less midrange output, if applicable!
gCaution: Both tweeter and midrange attenuation jumpers must be set to identical
positions! The tweeter and midrange levels are set best, after the installation is
complete with all the additional components you intend to install, like subwoofer,
amplifier(s) etc. The tweeter level balance should be entirely played by ear. For this
final adjustment, make sure the following steps have been carried out:
zHighpass and lowpass frequency adjustment settings of the electronic
crossovers
zInput gain level adjustment of satellite- and subwoofer channels (if applicable)
zTone controls - including the loudness function - set to neutral / zero position.

MONTAGEHINWEISE
GENERELLES
aBesorgen Sie sich vorab genügend qualitativ hochwertiges Lautsprecherkabel mit
einem Querschnitt von 2 x 2.5mm2. Bedenken Sie, dass je nach Montageort der
Weichen und des Verstärkers recht lange Wegstrecken zu überbrücken sind! Dieses Set
beinhaltet aus Qualitätsgründen nur die Anschluss/Verlängerungskabel für die beiden
Hochtöner und Mitteltöner. Das restliche Lautsprecherkabel, benötigt für den
Anschluss der Tiefmitteltöner und des Verstärkers an die Frequenzweiche, kaufen Sie
am besten bei Ihrem Radical Audio Händler.
sBevor Sie mit der Installation der Hochtöner, Mitteltöner oder Tiefmitteltöner beginnen,
überprüfen Sie die vorhandene Einbautiefe am gewünschten Montageort! Stellen Sie
sicher, dass keines der Lautsprechersysteme oder Frequenzweichen mit dem Tür-
schliessmechanismus oder der Fensterhebemechanik interferiert.
dVor der Demontage oder Montage von Teilen am Fahrzeug sollten Sie - zur eigenen
Sicherheit - das Minus (Masse)Kabel von der Batterie abhängen.
fLautsprecherkabel sollten nie ungeschützt über scharfe Kanten (Metallfalze) oder durch
selbst gebohrte Löcher geführt werden. Benutzen Sie unbedingt Gummitüllen, wenn
Sie Lautsprecherkabel durch Öffnungen in der Karosserie verlegen wollen!
MONTAGEORTE
Eine stabile und klar definierte räumliche Abbildung des Klangeschehens ist eine der
schwierigsten Aufgaben bei einer Lautsprecherinstallation im Fahrzeug! Meistens weil sich
die Montageöffnungen der Lautsprecher dort befinden, wo eine einfache Montage bei der
Herstellung des Fahrzeugs gewährleistet ist und nicht unbedingt dort, wo die Lautsprecher
akustisch am idealsten positioniert wären. Zumindest im Falle der Tiefmitteltöner finden
sich heute aber bei neueren Fahrzeugtypen meist recht stabile und gut vorbereitete
Lautsprecheraufnahmen in den Vordertüren. Gegebenfalls benötigen Sie für die Montage
der Euro-DIN Tiefmitteltöner in den Originalöffnungen der Vordertüren einen fahrzeug-
spezifischen Adapterring aus Kunststoff! Klären Sie dies vorab mit Ihrem Händler!
Die Plazierung der Mitteltöner und der Hochtöner hat einen extrem starken Einfluss auf die
räumliche Abbildungsfähigkeit ihres Lautsprechersystems! Die Mitteltöner, sollten falls der
Einbauaufwand es zulässt, so weit vorne und so hoch wie möglich in den Vordertüren mon-
tiert werden. Die Hochtöner sollten ausserdem nicht zu weit weg von den Mitteltönern
montiert werden. BEVOR SIE LÖCHER IN DIE TÜRPANELS ODER SPIEGELDREIECKE BOH-
REN UND SCHNEIDEN, empfehlen wir Ihnen einen kurzen Probelauf mit montierten
Hochtönern, Tiefmitteltönern, Mitteltönern und den Frequenzweichen, um die beste
Position für die Hochtöner zu finden. Der Hörtest zeigt meist deutliche klangliche
Unterschiede bei verschiedenen Hochtöner Montageorten. Die Tweeter können zu diesem
Zweck z.B. mit Doppelklebeband and den in Frage kommenden Orten fixiert werden. Erst
wenn klar ist, welcher Montageort der Hochtöner beste Ergebnisse liefert, sollte eine end-
gültige Entscheidung für die Positionierung getroffen werden.

EINIGE MONTAGERICHTLINIEN:
aPlazieren Sie die Mitteltöner und Hochtöner am besten dort, wo diese ohne direkte
Hindernisse auf Fahrer und Beifahrersitze strahlen können.
sNachdem Sie passende Montageorte gefunden haben, testen Sie beide
Anschlussvarianten der Hochtonpolarität aus! Als erstes in Phase d.h. auf und
auf wie an der Frequenzweiche angeschrieben, sowie BEIDE Hochtöner an der
Frequenzweiche VERPOLT. Eine dieser Anschlussvarianten wird deutlich besser klingen.
Die Polarität, mit welcher beide Hochtöner an der Frequenzweiche angeschlossen
werden, basiert primär auf dem Abstand zwischen Mitteltöner und Hochtöner und kann
daher nicht schlüssig vorhergesagt werden.
dVerwenden Sie unbedingt die beiden im Lieferumfang enthaltenen
Schaumstoffdichtringe für die Tiefmitteltöner! Diese stellen sicher, dass die
Tiefmitteltöner dicht in den Lautsprecheraufnahmen sitzen. Dies ist sehr wichtig um
den vollen Dynamikumfang im Grundton und Bassbereich sicherzustellen.
fAm besten befolgen Sie bei der Montage der Einzelkomponenten folgende Reihenfolge:
Demontage der Original-Lautsprecher zLautsprecherkabel verlegen zMontage
Tiefmitteltöner zMontage Mitteltöner zAnschluss und Montage der Frequenzweiche
zHochtönermontage
INSTALLATION DER TIEFMITTELTÖNER
Dieses Set ist für eine zeitsparende Installation der Tiefmitteltöner in den Originalöffnun-
gen der Fahrzeugtüren vorgesehen. Die bei den Tiefmitteltönern zum Einsatz kommenden
Euro-DIN Körbe mit ihren speziellen Aussparungen im Randbereich, ermöglichen eine pass-
genaue und schnelle Installation in den meisten Europäischen und Asiatischen Fahrzeugen.
Achtung: Bevor Sie mit der Installation beginnen stellen Sie unbedingt sicher, dass die
Tiefmitteltöner - aufgrund der benötigten Einbautiefe - nicht mit der Türschliess- oder
Fensterhebemechanik Ihres Fahrzeuges interferieren!
aDemontieren Sie die Plastikabdeckungen über den Originallautsprechern, in der
Vordertüre oder bereiten Sie das Doorboard für die Montage vor. Entfernen Sie
gegebenenfalls die Originallautsprecher.
sHalten Sie die Tiefmitteltöner in die Montageöffnungen und kontrollieren Sie, ob die
vorhandenen Montagelöcher deckungsgleich mit den am Korb befindlichen Schraub-
löcher sind. Falls nicht, bohren sie vier neue Befestigungslöcher mit einem 3 mm
Bohrer vor.
dVerwenden Sie die im Setumfang enthaltenen Stahlringe als Unterlage für die Montage
der Tiefmitteltöner. Der Stahlring rückt den Korb des Tiefmitteltöners um 6 mm nach
vorne. Stellen Sie also vor der Montage sicher, dass zwischen der Gummisicke des
Tiefmitteltöners und der Originalabdeckung aus Plastik genügend Spielraum für die
Membrane vorhanden ist. Die Sicke darf nirgends anstossen und sollte ca. 6 mm
Freiraum für die Membranauslenkung nach vorne haben. Die Stahlringe sorgen für eine
völlig flache und luftdichte Montagefläche. Weiterhin werden klanglich ungünstige
Vibrationen der Türpaneele durch die grössere Massenträgheit hörbar reduziert.
fSchliessen Sie die Lautsprecherkabel an die Schraub-Anschluss Terminals der
Tiefmitteltöner an. Montieren Sie nun die Tiefmitteltöner mit den mitgelieferten
Schrauben. Achten Sie beim Anschluss auf korrekte Polarität!

MONTAGE DER MITTELTÖNER
Die 50 mm Kalottenmitteltöner benötigen einen Loch-Ausschnitt von 76 mm und eine
Einbautiefe von 30 mm, bei Verwendung des flachen Montageringes mit Abdeckgitter.
Diese Montagevariante wird vorwiegend für den Türeinbau vorne zur Anwendung kommen.
Wenn Sie also die Mitteltöner in die Vordertüren einbauen wollen, müssen Sie
Montageöffnungen mit 76 mm Durchmesser und 30 mm Montagetiefe in den
Türabdeckungen anbringen. Dafür eignet sich z.B. eine Bohrmaschine mit Kernbohraufsatz.
Der zweite im Lieferumfang enthaltene, gewinkelte Adapter-Ring, dient für den Einbau der
Mitteltöner in vorhandenen Lautsprecheraufnahmen im Armaturenbrett. In beiden Fällen
muss die Haupt-Systemeinheit vorab mit Montageklammern bestückt werden. Klicken Sie
diese Klammern - jeweils vier pro Mitteltöner - mit leichtem Druck genau über Kreuz in 6,
9, 12 und 15 Uhr Stellung am Mitteltöner an. Die so vorbereitete Einheit wird jetzt - je nach
Bedarf, respektive Montageort - in den flachen oder gewinkelten Adapter mit den
Klammerenden voran eingeführt und kann durch gleichmässigen Druck bis an den
Anschlag des jeweiligen Ringes geführt werden. Jetzt ist die Einheit, nachdem Sie noch das
Zuleitungskabel an die Anschlussklemmen angesteckt haben, bereit für den Einbau. Die
endgültige Montage der Mitteltöner benötigt die vier selbstschneidenden Schrauben, die
auch im Zubehörset enthalten sind. Die Schraublöcher zur Montage der Mitteltöner sollten
mit einem 3 mm Bohrer vorgebohrt werden. Nach dem Festschrauben drücken Sie noch
die Abdeckgitter in die Montageringe. Fertig!
ANSCHLUSS / MONTAGE DER FREQUENZ-
WEICHEN
aSchliessen Sie die Zuführungskabel der Hochtöner, Mitteltöner, Tiefmitteltöner und des
Verstärkers an die RADICAL AUDIO RA163.3X Frequenzweichen an. Folgen Sie unbe-
dingt dem nachfolgend abgebildeten Anschlussplan und beachten Sie die Polaritäten!
sDer transparenten Deckel der Frequenzweiche lässt sich nach hinten abziehen. Im
Weichengehäuse befinden sich zwei Montagelöcher um die Weiche festzuschrauben.
Montieren Sie die Frequenzweichen am gewünschten Ort, im Lieferumfang sind selbst
schneidende Schrauben enthalten. Die Weichen sollten für die später folgende
Einstellung des Hochton- und Mitteltonpegels unbedingt zugänglich bleiben!

MONTAGE DER HOCHTÖNER
Im Lieferumfang der Hochtöner sind zwei verschiedene Montageadapter enthalten. Diese
ermöglichen eine flache Aufbaumontage, oder eine vollversenkte Montage der Hochtöner.
Die vollversenkte Montageoption ermöglicht ausserdem eine Ausrichtung des Hochtöners
auf den Hörer.
FLACHE AUFBAUMONTAGE
aBenutzen Sie den flachen Basisadapter des Hochtöners als Schablone und markieren
Sie am gewünschten Montageort mittels Filzstift zwei Löcher für die Montage des
Hochtöners und das grössere zentrale Loch für die Durchführung des
Zuführungskabels. Bohren Sie nun mit einem 3 mm Bohrer die beiden Montagelöcher
vor, verwenden Sie einen 6 mm Bohrer für das darunter liegende Loch des
Zuführungskabels.
sMontieren Sie die flachen Basisadapter unter Zuhilfenahme der mitgelieferten
Schrauben (im Zubehörset enthalten).
dFühren Sie die beiden Anschlusskabel der Hochtöner durch die zentrale
Kabeldurchführung in den Basisadaptern. Schliessen Sie die Verlängerungskabel (im
Zubehörset enthalten) an den Enden der Hochtönerkabel an.
dFühren Sie nun die Hochtöner in den konischen Montageadapter ein. Plazieren Sie den
Hochtöner über den Basisadapter. Mit einer Drehung im Uhrzeigersinn lässt sich der
Hochtöner im Basisadapter festmachen.

VOLLVERSENKTE MONTAGE
aDemontieren Sie das Panel, in welchem Sie den Hochtöner montieren wollen. Stellen
Sie sicher, dass hinter dem Panel - genau dort wo der Hochtöner montiert werden soll
- eine minimale Montagetiefe von 16 mm vorhanden ist.
sMarkieren Sie mit einem Filzstift jeweils die Mitte des Ortes, wo die Hochtöner mon-
tiert werden sollen. Bohren oder schneiden Sie jeweils ein Loch von exakt 40 mm in
die Panels. Sie können hierzu z.B. einen Kernbohraufsatz für die Bohrmaschine
verwenden.
dMontieren Sie die Kreuz-Kralle aus Blech an den Verriegelungs-Adapter mittels der im
Zubehör Set enthaltenen M4 Schraube.
fFühren Sie den Hochtöner von hinten in den Ring-Adapter ein. Führen Sie das
Zuführungskabel durch den flachen Verrieglungsadapter durch. Der Hochtöner lässt
sich nun endgültig im Panel fixieren indem der flache Verriegelungs-Adapter hinten am
Hochtöner Vorderteil angelegt und im Uhrzeigersinn gedreht wird. Schliessen Sie die
Hochtonlautsprecher Kabelverlängerung an die Enden des Hochtönerkabels an.
gNach erfolgter Montage beider Hochtöner können sie diese in die gewünschte Richtung
anwinkeln.

FEINEINSTELLUNG DES MITTEL / HOCHTON-
PEGELS
aDie beiden Jumper ermöglichen drei fein abgestufte Hochtonpegel und ausserdem zwei
mögliche Anpassungen des Mitteltonpegels. Diese Pegelanpassung ermöglicht Laut-
stärke-Unterschiede durch unterschiedliche Montageorte von Mittel- und Hochtönern
auszugleichen und auch den Klang im Mittel- und Hochtonbereich an den persönlichen
Geschmack anzugleichen.
sSchieben Sie den transparenten Deckel zurück und stellen Sie die Jumper so ein, dass
sich eine für Sie klanglich optimale Lautstärkebalance im Hochton- und Mitteltonbe-
reich ergibt.
dAchtung: Beide Jumper für Mittel- und Hochtöner müssen unbedingt auf den gleichen
Wert gesetzt werden. Die 0dB Stellung des Mittelton-Jumpers ist die Default
Einstellung. Der Jumper sollte nur auf -3dB gestellt werden, wenn der Mitteltonpegel
bedingt durch die Montage zu laut ist.
fDer absolute Hochtonpegel sollte erst ganz am Ende eingestellt werden, nachdem die
gesamte Anlage einschliesslich Subwoofer, Verstärker etc. – montiert und grob einge-
pegelt ist. Die Wahl dieses Pegels sollte immer rein nach Gehör (und Geschmack)
erfolgen! Für die abschliessende Pegeleinstellung müssen die nachfolgenden Schritte
bereits erfolgt sein:
z Einstellen der Hoch- und Tiefpassfrequenz an den Aktivweichen des Verstärkers
z Pegelabgleich zwischen Satelliten- und Subwooferkanal an der Endstufe
z Klangregler und Loudnessfunktion am Steuergerät in ihre Neutralstellung bringen
