engagement with World Heritage. New Zealand has been an active and committed member of the
World Heritage Committee over a long period of time and Paramount Chief Tumu Te HeuHeu sits

OUR PLACEThe World’s Heritage is envisaged as a top quality, international brand that will
photograph and document the diverse sites represented in the UNESCO World Heritage List, and
present them to a wide, contemporary audience through various media.
OUR PLACEThe World’s Heritage will consist primarily of a series of quality photographic
books.
An initial 10-book series is planned over the next fi ve years as ‘Stage 1’ of the OUR PLACE project.
The books will be supported by a highly interactive website that will feature information and
educational content as well as photographic images.
A series of television “short items” on the featured OUR PLACE sites is also planned in future years.
These items will be made available for transmission throughout the world.
The books, website and ultimately the television items will celebrate the planet’s most spectacular
and signifi cant natural and cultural features, and promote them in an accessible form to the widest
possible audience.
Superb, imaginative visual imagery combined with a high quality of presentation are the keys to the
OUR PLACE concept.

OUR PLACE THE WORLD’S HERITAGE
6
All the cultural, historical and natural places that have warranted World Heritage listing have
a special signifi cance to the numerous peoples who have interacted with and experienced them
through the ages.
Each of these sites has human stories interwoven with their physical presence. These very special sites
represent the heritage of “our place” on this earth.
The OUR PLACEThe World’s Heritage books will be primarily photographic, but with a signifi cant
point of difference. As well as superb images of some of the world’s most treasured locations, each
book will feature short quotes, sayings and observations that both relate to the specifi c sites and link
each site to the book’s overall theme and title. They will reinforce the human story behind the site.
Relevant sayings, observations and thoughts recorded by the people who have interacted with the
sites will be used as poignant and refl ective counterpoints to the photographic images. Some will
be thoughts by famous writers, philosophers, poets or national leaders; others will be from the local
people or visitors, both historical and contemporary. All will have been inspired by the location; all will
have been moved by the experience of OUR PLACE. Some examples of the themes of the fi rst ten
books include ‘Love and Beauty’, ‘Power and Passion’, ‘Treasures and Triumphs’.
OUR VISION
OUR PLACE THE WORLD’S HERITAGE
7
OUR PLACEThe World’s Heritage will feature all new, original photographic images shot
specifi cally for this project. Each book will feature a representative selection of sites from around the
world.
The quality of the OUR PLACE content will primarily be achieved by superb photography that
captures the “spirit”, drama and emotion of the featured site, as well as its physical, geographical,
historical and architectural signifi cance.
A representative selection of photographers and documentary-makers from around the world will be
invited to participate and join our team. Before they begin their photographic assignments, they will
be carefully briefed on the series’ unique style and feel.
OUR PLACE would appreciate any assistance and advice that you could give our photographers to
help ensure that they get the best photographic record of your national sites. We know that these
sites are very familiar and important to you, and our photographers want to capture them in the best
possible way. We will value all the assistance and advice you can give us.
People and their lives will be featured in many of the images to reinforce the human story and history
behind the site. “Their place” can be seen as part of “Our Place” too.
Acknowledging and telling the human stories behind the sites will be a key element of the OUR
PLACEThe World’s Heritage project.

The OUR PLACEThe World’s Heritage website is a vital part of the communication strategy of
this project. It will be an important means to reach the younger audience.
Utilizing the latest “Flash” web design technology, it will be intuitive and very user-friendly.
It will feature groupings of photographs of the sites that have been recorded for the OUR PLACE
project. As well, it will include cultural, historical and geographical information about the specifi c
sites and quotes from key World Heritage advocates and supporters. The website will be developed
in cooperation with the World Heritage Centre to avoid any duplication with the Centre’s own
website.
As the project adds more locations to its archive, they will be added to the site.

We would appreciate any assistance and guidance you and your offi cials could give us and our
photographers in furthering the aims of this project.
Often, we will need to get “behind the scenes” to capture the particular beauty and signifi cance of
these sites. Our photographers will appreciate your help in accessing these areas.
We will be contacting national World Heritage focal points following advice provided by the World
Heritage Centre, and would be grateful for any direct feedback you would like to give the OUR
