The document provides step-by-step guidance on how to properly install these components, including inspections, torque requirements, and specific procedures for original and replacement hubs. I am ready to answer any specific questions you may have about the installation process.
  • What should I inspect before installing the hub?
What must be purchased when a replacement axle shaft is installed?

AMC20 Axle Shaft / Hub Installation Instructions
Inspection
Inspect the hub for loose or distorted wheel studs and replace where necessary. Inspect the keyway and tapered center bore for wear,
damaged serration or cracks. Replace hub if worn or damaged.
Installation
NOTE: When a replacement axle shaft is installed, a replacement hub must also be purchased. However, a replacement hub may be
installed on an original axle shaft if the serrations on the axle are not worn or damaged.
Installation using an original hub
1. Align keyway in hub with axle shaft key.
2. Slide hub onto axle shaft as far as possible.
3. Install nut and washer.
4. Install drum, drum retaining screws, and wheel.
5. Torque axle shaft nut to 250 ft. lbs. If cotter pin hole is not aligned tighten the nut to the next castellation and install the cotter pin.
Installation using a replacement hub
1. Align Key in hub with axle shaft key.
2. Lubricate 2 thrust washers with liberal amounts of grease and
install washers on axle shaft.
3. Install axle shaft nut.
4. Install drum, drum retaining screws, and wheel.
5. Lower vehicle to ground.
6. Tighten axle shaft nut until the difference from the hub outer face
to the end of the axle is 1-5/16" (see illustration below)
NOTE: This dimension must be achieved in order to form the hub
serrations.
7. Remove axle shaft and 1 thrust washer.
8. Install the nut and torque to 250 ft. lbs. If the cotter pin is not
aligned tighten nut to the next castellation in insert the cotter pin.
