GROUNDINGTHEGENERATOR
TheNationalElectricalCoderequiresthattheframeand
externalelectricallyconductivepartsofthisgeneratorbe
properlyconnectedtoanapprovedearthground.Local
electricalcodesmayalsorequirepropergroundingof
theunit.Forthatpurpose,aGROUNDINGFASTENER
isprovidedonthegeneratorend(Figure).6
Generally,connectingaNo.12AWG(AmericanWire
Gauge)strandedcopperwiretothegroundingfastener
andtoanearth-drivencopperorbrassgroundingrod
(electrode)providesadequateprotectionagainstelec-
tricalshock.Becarefultokeepthegroundingwire
attachedafterconnectingthestrandedcopperwire.
However,localcodesmayvarywidely.
Properlygroundingthegeneratorhelpspreventelectrical
shockifagroundfaultconditionexistsinthegenerator
orinconnectedelectricaldevices,especiallywhenthe
unitisequippedwithawheelkit.Propergroundingalso
helpsdissipatestaticelectricity,whichoftenbuildsupin
ungroundeddevices.

andmeetstheminimumoctaneratingrequirements.
Beforeusinganoxygenatedfuel,trytoconfirmthefuel
contents.Somestates/provincesrequirethisinformation
tobepostedonthepump.ThefollowingaretheEPA
approvedpercentagesofoxygenates:

Toprolongthelifeofthegeneratorandattacheddevices,
itisimportanttotakecarewhenaddingelectricalloads
tothegenerator.Thereshouldbenothingconnected
tothegeneratoroutletsbeforestartingtheengine.The
correctandsafewaytomanagegeneratorpoweristo
sequentiallyaddloadsasfollows:
1.Withnothingconnectedtothegenerator,start
theengineasdescribedearlierinthismanual.
2.Pluginandturnonthefirstload,preferablythe
largestloadyouhave.
3.Permitthegeneratoroutputtostabilize.(engineruns
smoothlyandattacheddeviceoperatesproperly.)
4.Pluginandturnonthenextload.
5.Again,permitthegeneratortostabilize.
6.Repeatsteps4and5foreachadditionalload.
Neveraddmoreloadsthanthegeneratorcapacity.
Takespecialcaretoconsidersurgeloadsingenerator
capacityaspreviouslydescribed.

Donotuseagardenhosetocleanthegenerator.Water
enteringthefuelsystemorotherinternalpartsofthe
unitcancauseproblemsthatwilldecreasethelifeofthe
generator.
Tocleantheunit:
Useasoftbristlebrushand/orvacuumcleanerto
loosenandremovedirtanddebris.
Cleanairventswithlowpressureairthatdoesnot
exceed25psi.
Wipetheexteriorsurfacesofthegeneratorwitha
dampcloth.
CLEANING/REPLACINGAIRFILTERS
Forproperperformanceandlonglife,keepairfiltersclean:
Releasetheupperandlowerretainingclipsand
removetheairfiltercover.
Removetheouterfilterelementandtheinner
precleanerelement.
Ifthefilterelementsaredirty,cleanwithwarm,soapy
water.Rinseandletdry.
Applyalightcoatofengineoiltotheelements,then
squeezeitout.
Putthefilterelementsbacktogetherandreplace
intheairfiltercompartment,beingcarefultoplace
theouterfilterelementclosesttotheairfiltercover.
Replacethecoverandsnapretainingclipsbackin
placetosecure.
NOTE:Donotrunthegeneratorwithouttheairfilters.
Rapidenginewearwillresult.

Tocheckthesparkplug:
Removethesparkplugcap.
Cleananydirtfromaroundthebaseofthespark
plug.
Removethesparkplug.
Inspectthesparkplugfordamage,andcleanwith
awirebrushbeforereinstalling.Iftheinsulator
iscrackedorchipped,thesparkplugshouldbe
replaced.
NOTE:Ifreplacing,usethefollowingrecommended
sparkplugsorequivalent:NGK,.
Measurethepluggapwithafeelergauge.The
FT7C
correctgapis.028-.031in.Correct,ifnecessary,by
carefullybendingthesideelectrode.
Seatsparkpluginposition;threadinbyhandto
preventcross-threading.
Tightenwithsparkplugwrenchtocompresswasher.
Ifsparkplugisnew,use1/2turntocompress
washerappropriateamount.Ifreusingoldspark
plug,use1/8to1/4turnforproperwasher
compression.
