Do not operate power tools in explosive stmo-

ELECTRICAL SAFETY
Double Insulated tools are equipped with a polar-
ized plug (one blade iswider than the other). This
plug wi(I fit in a polarized out(st only one way. If the
plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug.
If it still does not fit, contact qualified eleoVldan
to install e polarized out(eL Do nat change the plug
in anyway. Doubleinsulation[] eliminatesthe need
for thethree-wire groundedpowercordand grounded
power supplysystem.
Avoid body contact wlth grounded surfaces such
as pipes, radiators, range_, and rstrlperatore. There

Don't expose power tools to rein or wet conditions`
Water enteringa powertoolwillIncrease the riskof

Do nat abuse the cord. Never use the cord to carry
the tools or pull the plug from an outlet. Keep cord
away from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving parts.
Replace damaged cords immediately. Damaged

When operating s power tool outside,use an outdoor

PERSONAL SAFETY
Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use com-

Remove adjusting keys or wrenches before tuming
the tool on. A wrenchor a key that isleftattached to a

Do not overreach. Keep proper footing end balance

TOOL USE AND CARE
Use clamps or other practical way to secure and
support the workplece to a stable platform. Holding
thework byhand oragainst yourbodyis unstableand
may lead to lossof centroL
Do not force too/. Use the correct tool for your ap-
plication. The correct too(willdo the job better and
setar at the ratetor whichitis designed.
Do not cee tool if=witch does not turn it on or off.
Anytoolthat cannotbe controlledwith the switchis
dangerousand mustbe repaired.
Disconnect the plug from power source before
making any adjustments, changing accessories,
or storing the tool. Such preventivesafety measures
reduce theriskof startingthe tool accidentally.
Store idle tools out of the reach of children and
other untrained persona. Tootsare dangerousinthe
handsofuntrainedusers.

Check for misaitgnment or binding of moving parts,

Hold tool byInsulated gripping surhlcse when
performing an operation where the cutting tool may
contact hidden wiring or Its own cord. Contactwith

DOUBLE INSULATION
Double insulationisa concept insafety in electricpower
tools, which eliminates the need for the usualthres-wlre
groundedpowercord. AJiexposedmetal partsare

to be grounded.

The sanderhasa comfortablepalm grip handlethat
provides maximum one-hand control and comfortand re-

INSTALLING SANDPAPER
The cushionon the sander givesyou theoptionof using
either non-adhesivesandpaperthat clamps to theplaten
or adhesive backed sandpaper with pressuresensitive
adhesive backingthatsticksto the cushion.
INSTALLING NON-ADHESIVE SANDPAPER
See Figure2.
Unplug thesander.
inspectsandpaper beforeinstalling.Do not use if bro-
ken or defsc_ve.
Ifrap{acingsandpaper, removeoldsandpaper. To
removepaper, release paper clamp by lifting up on
leverand disengagingitfromthe tab onthe platen.
Insertend ofnew 1/4sheet sandpaper approximately
(1/2 inch) underthe paper clamp.
Lift up on paper clamp (everand lock intop(ace.Apply
downwardpressureto conformsandpaper to p(atan.
Wrap sandpaper aroundcushion.Lift lever on opposite
end ofsanderand insertlooseend ofsandpaperunder
the paper clamp.Fit sandpaper againstcushionas
fight as possible.
Liftup on paperclampleverand lock _ntoplace.

Ifreplacingadhesivesandpaper,remove oldsand-
paperby peelingitoffcushion.Ifreplacingregular
sandpaper,relsase paper C_T_pby liftingup onpaper
cramp lever and disengagingitfrom thetab on the
platen.
Remove non-adhesivesandpaper, then liftup on paper
damp lever end lock it into place.
Carefullypeel adhesivebacking from new 114sheet
sandpaper.
Positionsandpaper, makingsure frontedge of sand-
paperisalignedwith front edge ofthe cushion,then
carefullypress_cky side ofsandpaper on cushion.
NOTE: Sandpapermust be a[igned with the front edge
ofthe cushionfor proper functioningoftheflush sand-
ing feature.
The cushion onthe sander ksapprox_nnately
1/4 in.smallerthan precutadhesive-backedsanding
sheets. If desiredyou may want to vim offthe over-
hang ofsandpaperon the back side ofcushion.The
cushion hasbeen made smallersothat multiple sheets
ofnonadhesivesandpapercan be installed.

A paper punch template has been suppliedwith the sand-
er. Itshouldbe used for sflgning and punchingholesin the
sandpaper for alignmentwith the holes in the cushion.

ing sanding operation.Formore effLcientoperation,empty

TO INSTALL DUST BAG:
Unplugthe sander.
Aligngrooves on dust bag with notchesonsander dust
exhaust.
Slide dust bag ontodust exhaust.
Turn clockwiseuntilbag looksintoplace.
TO REMOVE DUST BAG FOR EMPTYING:
Unplugthe sander.
Turn dust bag counterclockwiseuntilit stops turning.

When sandingfor an extended periodoftime, you can
easilyattach the dust collectionsystemof thesander to s
vaouum.
To Attach:
Unplugthe sander.
Remove dustbag from sander.
Attach vacuum hoseto dust exhaust.
NOTE: Vacuum hosefits insidedustexhaust.
Connect sander and vacuum to powersupply.

SANDPAPER SELECTION
Selectingthe correctsize gritand type sandpaperis
an extremelyimportantstep inachievinga highquality
sandedfinish.Aluminumoxide,siliconcarbide,and other
syntheticabrsaivea are bestfor power sanding. Natural
abrasivessuchas flintand gernetaretoo solt for eco-
nomicaluse in powersanding.In genera[,coarse gritwill
remove the most material and finer gritwillproducethe
best _nish in allsanding operations.The conditionof the
surfaceto be sandedwilldeterminewhichgritwilldo the
job. If thesurfaceis rough,start with a coarsegritand
sand untilthesurface Isuniform.Medium gritmay then
be usedto removescratchesleftbythe coarsergrita,'_d
finergritusedfor finishingof thesurface.Alwayscontinue
sanding with each grituntilsurfaceis uniform.
NOTE: Do not usesanderwithout sandpaper. Doingso
willdamage the cushion.
CAUTION: Becarafutnotto letyour handcom-
pletelycoverthe air vents.
SANDING

Clamp orotherwisesecure thework to preventitfrom
moving underthe sander.

Hold the sander in front and away fromyou, keepingit
clear ofthe workpiece. Startthesanderby slidingthe
switchbutton to theON positionand lettingthe motor

fiberglass chipsand grindingsare highlyabrasiveto bear-
ings,brushes,commutators,etc. Consequently,we do not
recommendedusingthistoolfor extendedwork on these
typesof materials. However,it youdo work with anyof
these materials,itis extremelyimportantto clean thetool
usingcompressedair.
LUBRICATION
Allof thebearingsin this toolam lubricatedwith a suffi-
cientamountof highgradelubricantfor the lifeof theunit
undernormaloperatingconditions.Therefore,nofurther
lubricationisrequired.
Onlythe partsshownon the parts listare intendedtobe
repairedor replaced bythe customer.All otherparts
shouldbe replacedat a SearsServiceCenter.

Remove clamp screws(2.).
Removebrushtube clamps(2).
Disconnectred and blacklead terminalsfl'om brush
tubes.
Remove brushassemblies(2).
Check for wear. Replacebothbrushassemblieswhen
e(therhas tess than 1/4 in. length of carbon remaining.
Do not replaceone side withoutreplacingtheother.
Installnew brushassemblies.Make sure curvature
of brushm_ches curvatureof motorand thatbrush
moves freely in brushtube.
Reassembleby reversingthe steps listedabove.
Tightenallscrews securely.Do not overtighten.
