MACHINE CUTTING TORCHES
These INSTRUCTIONS are for experienced operators. If you are not fully familiar with the principles of operation and safe practices
for Oxy-Fuel gas equipment, we urge you to read our booklet “Precautions and Safe Practices for Welding, Cutting, and Heating”,
Form 2035. Do NOT permit untrained persons to install, operate or maintain this equipment. Do NOT attempt to install or oper-
ate this equipment until you have read and fully understand these instructions. If you do not fully understand these instructions,
contact your supplier for further information.
The cutting torches covered by these instructions are listed by Third Party Listed only when using cutting nozzles and parts
manufactured by ESAB Welding & Cutting Products to the specications on le with Third Party Listed and when they are used in
the gas service for which they are designed and listed. The use of other cutting nozzles and parts that cause damage or failure to
the equipment will void the manufacturers warranty.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
The C-69 is designed for use with low or medium pres-
sure fuel gases, other than acetylene. The C-70 is for
use with medium pressure acetylene.
The C-69 and C-70 are not equipped with valves. They
must be used in conjunction with a manifold or valve
block for control of gas ow. All references to control
valves in these instructions apply to such a manifold
or valve block.
Connecting
Attach the oxygen and fuel gas supply hose to the
regulators and to the manifold or valve block. Connect
the manifold or valve block to the torch, using hose at
least 36 inches long. Make sure that all connections
are gas tight.
Attach the desired nozzle to the torch and tighten the
nozzle nut with a wrench. (See cutting charts for cor-
rect nozzle.)
Flashbacks can cause serious burns.
Be sure gas ow is sufcient for head or nozzle size.
Adjust regulators for proper PSIG pressures. Adjust
throttle valves properly. Keep torch in good repair. DO
NOT throttle back gases to use large head or nozzle
on thin material.
Adjusting Gas Pressures
Oxygen: Open wide the cutting oxygen control valves
on the manifold or block. turn in the pressure-adjusting
screw on the oxygen regulator until the delivery-
pressure gauge indicates the correct oxygen pressure
(see charts).
Acetylene (C-70): Open the acetylene control valve
on the manifold or block about one full turn. Turn in the
pressure-adjusting screw on the acetylene regulator
until the delivery-pressure gauge indicates the correct
acetylene pressure (see charts). Close the acetylene
control valve.
Be sure this information reaches the operator.

IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS
When using Oxy-Fuel Gas Torches, basic safety precautions should always be followed:
Never use Acetylene gas at a pressure over 15 psig.a.
Never use damaged equipment.b.
Never use oil or grease on or around Oxygen equipment.c.
Never use Oxygen or fuel gas to blow dirt or dust o clothing or equipment.d.
Never light a torch with matches or a lighter. Always use a striker.e.
Always wear the proper welding goggles, gloves and clothing when operating Oxy-Acetylene equipment. f.
Pants should not have cus.
Do not carry lighters, matches or other ammable objects in pockets when welding or cutting.g.
Always be aware of others around you when using a torch.h.
Be careful not to let welding hoses come into contact with torch ame or sparks from cutting.i.

This equipment will perform in conformity with the description thereof contained in this manual and accompa-
nying labels and/or inserts when installed, operated, maintained and repaired in accordance with the instruc-
tions provided. This equipment must be checked periodically. Malfunctioning or poorly maintained equipment
should not be used. Parts that are broken, missing, worn, distorted or contaminated should be replaced imme-
diately. Should such repair or replacement become necessary, the manufacturer recommends that a telephone
or written request for service advice be made to the Authorized Distributor from whom it was purchased.
This equipment or any of its parts should not be altered without the prior written approval of the manufacturer.
The user of this equipment shall have the sole responsibility for any malfunction which results from improper
use, faulty maintenance, damage, improper repair or alteration by anyone other than the manufacturer or a ser-
vice facility designated by the manufacturer.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Fuel Gases (C-69): Open the fuel gas valve on the
manifold or block about one full turn. Adjust the regula-
tor to desired pressure (see chart on page 3). Close
the fuel gas valve.
Lighting
Open the preheat oxygen control valve a small fraction
of a turn. Open the fuel gas control valve wide and light
the gas at the nozzle with a lighter. Open the cutting
oxygen control valve and adjust the ames to neutral
with the preheat oxygen control valve.
Shutting Off
First close the cutting oxygen control valve, then the
fuel gas control valve, and then the preheat oxygen
control valve.
OPERATING PRECAUTIONS
Flow: There must be proper ow of gases for safe op-
eration and full performance. This requires the following
three conditions: (1) the regulators that determine the
inlet pressure to the hoses must be set to the correct
pressure: (2) the hoses and their connectors must have
adequate capacity for the job (hoses that are too long,
too small or have connectors with small passageways
can cause problems); and (3) the throttle valves on the
torch must be adjusted with the procedure shown in
these instructions.
Note: Items (1) and (2) can be checked by measuring
the gas pressures at the torch. Gauge adaptors
are available for this purpose.
Backre: Improper operation of the torch may cause
the ame to go out with a loud ‘pop’. Such a backre
may be caused by contact of the nozzle with the work,
by spatter from the work, or by the use of incorrect gas
pressures, or by leakage at the cutting nozzle seats due
to dirt or nicks on the seats or to a loose nozzle nut.
Flashback: Under certain circumstances, the ame
may not ‘pop’ out (backre) but instead burn back inside
the torch with a shrill hissing or squeal. This is called
a ‘ashback’. A ashback should never occur if (1) the
equipment is in good condition; (2) preheat ports on
cutting nozzles or welding tips re cleaned frequently;
(3) operating pressures are correct; and (4) throttle
valves are adjusted properly. Should a ashback occur,
IMMEDIATELY shut off the torch. Allow it to cool off for
at least a minute. Then check your nozzle or tip, gas
pressure, readjust regulators if necessary, and relight
the torch. If ashback recurs, send the torch handle and
welding head or cutting attachment to ESAB Remanu-
facturing Center or to your distributor for repair.

MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
For all repairs other than those covered below, send
the apparatus to your ESAB Welding & Cutting
Products distributor or to ESAB Remanufacturing
Center, 411 S. Ebenezer Road, Florence SC 29501.
Improperly repaired apparatus is hazardous.
Cleaning Cutting Nozzles
If the cutting nozzle does not product straight, uniform
ames, or if the orices of the nozzle become clogged,
clean then by hand with the correct size twist drills or
OXWELD Tip Cleaners. (See page 4 for the correct drill
sizes. Relationship between drill sizes and OXWELD
Tip Cleaner sizes shown on the tip cleaner case.)
Maintaining clean orices is highly recommended for
reducing any incidence of ashbacks.
NOTE: If using a 1563 ‘HS’ style nozzle, do NOT clean
with notched-type wires or twist drills since any metal
removal from the passages will destroy the precision
cutting characteristics. Use the non-cutting wires and
taper reamers included in the OXWELD ‘HS’ Nozzle
Cleaning Kilt (Part No. 755F00). Cleaning instructions
are supplied with the kit.
For longer life, nozzles should be cleaned periodically
in a solution of OXWELD nozzle cleaning compound
(Part No. 761F00) made up and used as directed on
the jar in which it is packed.
Changing Injectors
1. Unscrew the body plug between the hose connec-
tions in the body. Remove the spring.
2. Turn the torch upside down and tap body gently
against a soft wood block. If the injector fails to fall
free, insert a standard No. 10 —32 machine screw,
1-1/4-in. or more in length, into the rear of the mixer
and pull it out.
3. Inspect the seat in the torch body to make sure
that it is clean and free of chips. Wipe the recess
in the torch with a clean cloth.
4. Carefully examine the injector to be inserted. If
the “O” ring is scuffed or worn, replace it with a
new one. If the injector is bent or if its tip has been
nicked or marred, it should be replaced.
5. Apply a thin lm of silicone lubricant (17672) to
the outside of the “O” ring and insert the injector,
using a rotating motion for a positive “O” ring seal.
Make certain the injector tip is bottomed in the torch
body.
6. Insert the spring in the torch body. Inspect the body
plug. If the “O” ring is scuffed or worn, replace it with
a new one. Tighten the body plug into the body.
Cleaning Injector or Mixer
1. Follow steps 1 - 3 in the preceding section.
2. Clean the C-69 injector (01Y68) with a No. 51
drill.
3. Clean the main passage of the C-70 injector
(101Z49) drill. Clean the cross drillings at the front
end of the C-70 mixer with a No. 58 drill.
4. Follow the steps 4 - 6 in the preceding section.

The drawing below shows all replacement parts available for the C-69 and C-70 torches. Parts are identical for
both torches except as indicated. To order, identify the required parts from the drawing and specify by part number
and name. Parts may be ordered from your ESAB distributor or from ESAB Welding & Cutting Products, Customer
Service Department, Florence, SC.
