SAEfon CL - Operating instructions
1. INTRODUCTION
The SAEfon CL telephone sets are multifunctional digital telephones,
specifically designed for exchanges of SELTATEL line: they allow to
use advanced voice services and will quickly become a practical and
functional instrument for your personal communications.
The most significant characteristics of these telephones include: a
large alphanumeric display, multicolor LEDs, amplified listening, use
of headset, wall mounting possibility, programmable keys for the
immediate execution of customized functions, telephone book and
calls log services.
This booklet provides a description of performances and services
offered by SAEfon CL telephones.
2. SAFETY
Please, read the following safety advice carefully before using a SAEfon CL
telephone:
Read these instructions and keep them in a safe place.
Keep the containing box of the telephone.
Never open up the telephone yourself and have your service work carried out by
a specialist.
Place your telephone on a flat and non-slip surface.
Ensure that your telephone is not positioned in direct sunlight or near other heat
sources.
Do not install or use your telephone in areas where there is a risk of explosion.
Protect the telephone from humidity, water, steam, dust and aggressive liquids.
Do not place the telephone near electromagnetic fields (electric engines,
household units). This could impair voice quality.
Avoid using the telephone near radios, TV and video units.
Do not use the telephone near water or if your hands are wet.
You can clean your telephone, after having disconnected it, using a soft, slightly
damp or antistatic cloth.
Never use cleaning solvents, alcohol, petrol or any other chemical substances to
clean the telephone.
Use the telephone in a temperature range from +5°C to +40°C.
Only connect the connecting cable to a socket intended for digital telephones.
Never replace the connector of the connecting cable.
SAEfon CL telephones are intended exclusively for the use with SELTATEL
exchanges.

3. DECLARATION OF CONFORMITY
SELTATEL spa - Via Nazionale, Km 404,500 - 64019 Tortoreto Lido
(TE) - Italy, declares that the following product “multifunctional digital
telephone SAEfon CL” complies with the directive 1999/05/CE of
European Parliament and of the Council of 1999 March 9th for radio
equipments and the reciprocal recognition of their conformity. The
original declaration of conformity is kept in the SELTATEL archives -
Via Nazionale, Km 404,500 - 64019 Tortoreto Lido (TE) Italy.
4. EMC COMPATIBILITY
Warning, only for SAEfon CL 16, 28 and 76: This is a system of
class A. In a residential environment it can cause radio-disturbs. In
this case it can be asked to the user to take adequate measures.
5 . EN V I R ON M E NTAL I M PA C T
Referring to the executives 2002/95/CE, 2002/96/CE and 2003/108/
CE, relating to reduction of dangerous substances in electrical and
elctronic equipments, as well as disposal of refuses, the symbol
reported on the equipment or in the package and in the following
picture, recommend that the product at the end of its life cycle has to
be disposed separately from other refuses.
The differentiated recovery of this equipment at the end of its life
cycle is arranged and managed by the manufacturer. The user that
wants to dispose of this equipment has to contact the manufacturer
and follow the procedure adopted for the differentiated recovery of
the equipment at the end of its life cycle.
The suitable diferentiated recovery for the successive recycling,
treatment and disposal of waste contributes to avoid possible harmful
environmental effects, to ensure human health and to encourage the
reuse and recycle of materials and components of waste electrical
and electronic equipments.

6. SAEFON CL TELEPHONE
6.1. SAEfon CL 08D
The SAEfon CL 08D telephone includes a 2x16 character display and
8 function keys.
6.2. SAEfon CL 16D - SAEfon CL 28D
The SAEfon CL 28D telephone includes, plus with respect to SAEfon
CL 16D, one row of twelve function keys, the functionalities and the
remaining function keys are identical.

6.3. SAEfon CL 76D
The telephone SAEfon CL 76D includes all SAEfon CL 28D functions,
plus a 24 keys expansion module (K module).
6.4. Connecting the handset cable
Connect one end of the spiral connecting cable into the appropriate
jack on the back of the telephone and the other end of this cable into
the handset.
6.5. Connecting the line cable
Connect one end of the line cable to the appropriate jack on the back
of the telephone and insert the other end into the RJ45 socket
towards the SELTATEL exchange.

Warning!
Before inserting the line cable into the RJ45 socket, make sure that
this is configured for numeric telephones and not for other kind of
terminations (such as trunk lines or analog telephones).

6.6. Standard keys
+ and - keys, on all SAEfon CL models, modify the
volume of the handset, ringer and speaker, and modify
the display contrast.
Arrow keys, on all SAEfon CL models but on CL 08D,
allow to navigate the programming menu.
Confirm key, on all SAEfon CL models but on CL 08D,
allows to confirm the chosen option menu and input data.
Pre-programmed function keys with Led, on all SAEfon
CL models but on CL 08D, in the order: recall, hands-
free, speaker and release.
The [SHIFT] key is present on expansion module (K
Module) of CL 76D, if it is off, it provides access from 1 to
24 functions, while, if on, it provides access from 25 to
48.

7. MAIN INFORMATIONS
7.1. Led
Leds associated to the keys show the state of the telephone, of the
trunk line or of the service to which they are associated.
The following table shows the meaning of the various colours and
flashing frequency of the LEDs.
Table 1: LED state
note 1): the led only lights up green if the key is concerning a configured trunk line in a group
of intercommunicating extensions, otherwise it lights up red.
note 2): on some systems the led associated to the parking key lights up amber.
Active telephone
The telephone is active when it can execute an operation (concerning
a supervised line or a service, for instance the “forwarding call”) with
the key associated to the LED.

Passive telephone
The telephone is passive when has the led of a line associated to the
key (supervision) and any operation cannot be executed on this line.
It can only show the status of the line associated to the key (for
instance the led turns steady red, it means that the line is busy).
7.2. Telephone display in idle
When the telephone is in idle:
- the first row of the display shows hour and date
- the second row shows your extension number, your user
name if customized and your class of service.
7.3. Outgoing calls display
During dialling to make a call, the first row on display shows the
dialled number and the second row is empty:
- if you dialled an extension, the first row keeps on showing the
dialled number, when it answers, while the second row
shows the number of the extension that has answered the
call;
- if you dialled a public network number, the first row keeps on
showing the dialled number and you can see also the
duration of the call, when it answers.
7.4. Incoming calls display
During an incoming call:
- if the call comes from an extension, the display shows on the
second row the number of the caller with the user name, if
customized
- if the call comes from the incoming trunk line, the display
shows the number of the trunk line caller and the name,
if customized (in the table of the speed numbers or the local
telephone book).
If the extension is in conversation and a new call arrives, or he is
free and more than a call arrives, it is possible to know the caller
identifier which is not shown, if the “Caller ID” key has been
customized:

- press the “Caller ID” key, the LED associated to the key
lights red steady
- to know the identifier of the call associated to the
supervision or internal call or trunk line call key, press
the same key: the display shows the information desired
and the LED associated to the “Caller ID” key turns off
- after 5 seconds the display shows the previous
information
- to show other identifiers repeat the request
If the user wants to know the identifier of the call in queue on busy
(the display shows “call on hold”):
- press the “Caller ID” key twice: the information of the user
in queue (the first if more than one) is showed on the
display and the LED associated to the “Caller ID” turns off
- after 5 seconds the display shows the previous
information

8. TELEPHONE SETTINGS
8.1. Adjusting the display contrast
To adjust the display contrast:
- hold the key and press [6]
- you will hear a short confirm ring
- press the or key to increase or decrease
contrast
- by pressing [#] you will save the change; by pressing [] you
exit the adjustment without saving the change. In both cases
you will hear a short confirm ring
8.2. Modifying the volume and ring melody
To set the volume:
- hold the key and press [2]
- you will hear a short confirm ring
- press the key or the key to increase or
decrease the ring volume
- by pressing [#] you will save the change; by pressing [] you
exit the adjustment without saving the change. In both cases
you will hear a short confirm ring.
8.3. How to disable telephone ring
It is possible to prevent your telephone from ringing
- press the [switch off ring] key
- the LED associated to the key flashes to remember that the
function is active
- to activate again the telephone ring press the key again.

8.4. Handset and speaker volume adjustment
During a conversation you may need to increase or decrease the
volume of the handset or the volume of the speaker.
- press the or key to increase or decrease the
volume.

9. MAIN FEATURES
9.1. Making a call
To make an internal call:
- lift the handset or press the key (loudspeaker)
- dial the desired number using the dialling keypad or press the
function key associated to the desired number
- after the call is answered, if not previously done, lift the
handset.
To make an external call:
- lift the handset or press the key (loudspeaker)
- dial the access code for external line (i.e. 0) or press the
function key associated to the desired number
- only in the first case (access code for external line), after the
dialling invitation tone, dial the number of the desired user
- after the call is answered, if not previously done, lift the
handset.
To make a call with automatic hands-free call, if the extension
is enabled:
- leave the handset on-hook
- dial the desired number using the dialling keypad or press the
function key associated to the desired extension.
To make an external call with speed number (customized on
the system):
- lift the handset or press the key (loudspeaker)
- dial the access code to the speed numbers table
- after a dialling invitation tone, dial the two digits code (00-99)
corresponding to the progressive number in table.
9.2. Answering a call
The telephone advises an incoming call is arriving, in several ways: it
rings, the display shows the number of the caller, the LED associated
to the key (of trunk line or internal line) starts blinking and becomes
green (direct call) or amber (callback).
To answer an incoming call, if the telephone is enabled to the
automatic unhook answer:
- to answer with the handset just lift it

- to answer in hands-free mode press the key
(loudspeaker).
To answer a call, if the telephone is enabled to answer with
dedicated key:
- to answer with the handset, lift it and press the dedicated key
- to answer in hands-free mode, press the key
(loudspeaker) and then press the dedicated key.
To answer an incoming call from the conversation status. If a
second call arrives during a conversation:
- you will hear a short tone that advise you a call is coming
- the LED associated to the key (of trunk line) starts blinking
and becomes green (direct call) or amber (callback)
- it is possible to release the current call (if external) parking
the line or releasing the conversation
- press the key in calling without hanging up the handset.
9.3. Ending a call
To end a call:
- hang up the handset or press the key (release)
or
- if you are making an hands-free call, press the key
(loudspeaker) or the key (release).
9.4. Transferring a call
You are in conversation and want to recall another user:
- dial the RECALL suffix
or
- press the RECALL key

- dial the user number or press the associated function key (if
configured), establishing the conversation.
To retrieve the call on hold and release the current conversation:
- dial the RECALL suffix
or
- press the RECALL key
To put on hold the current subscriber and to resume the
communication with the one on hold:
- type the TOGGLE suffix . The operation
can be executed the wished number of times. The current
subscriber in conversation is always shown on the display.
To make a transfer after the call is answered:
- make the recall as previously described
- wait for the answer and then hang up.
To make an automatic transfer:
- make the recall as previously described
- hang up.
9.5. Switching off the microphone (mute)
It is possible to switch off the microphone during a conversation:
- press the [microphone] key
- the LED associated to the key flashes
- to switch on the microphone press again the key.
Note: during conversation, with handset and amplified listening
active, it is not possible to exclude the microphone because pressing
microphone key would cause the activation of the hands-free service.
9.6. Amplified listening
It is possible to enable the amplified listening during a conversation:

- press the LOUDSPEAKER key; the LED associated to
the LOUDSPEAKER key turns on
- at the same time, also the MICROPHONE key of the hands-
free is active. It can be disabled by pressing the
MICROPHONE key.
To disable the service:
- press the LOUDSPEAKER key, the LED associated turns
off.
9.7. How to switch your telephone to multifrequency dialling
(DTMF)
If you want to use special services that require the multifrequency
dialling (i.e. use on public exchange or use of Voice Mail), press the
[#] key.

10. TELEPHONE FEATURES
This section describes the services that can be associated to the
function keys of your telephone through the customization of the
exchange or through programming from your telephone. Some
services are available also with combination of numeric keys (suffixes
and/or prefixes).
10.1. How to place a trunk line in parking
To put a call in parking:
- dial the “park suffix
or
- press the PARK key on your telephone
or
- press the function key associated to the line in conversation
(the LED blink green slowly)
To retrieve the call from parking:
- dial the retrieve parked trunk line prefix
or
- press the PARK key on your telephone
or
- press the function key associated to the line in parking (the
LED turns steady green)
10.2. Three way conference
You wish to establish a conference:
- press the RECALL key to put the party on hold
- call a second party you want to include in the conference

- when he answers, announce the conference and dial the “3-
way conference” code
Hang up if you want to leave the conference.
10.3. Messages
"Recall me" message
To leave a "recall me" message to an extension that is busy or does
not answer:
- dial the number of the extension
- dial the “send call message“ code
or
- press the MESSAGE function key
- wait for a tone of confirmation and then hang up.
Answer a message
To answer any type of message:
- lift the handset, you will hear the “acceptance tone of the
service”
- dial the “receive vocal or call invitation message” prefix
or
- press the MESSAGE function key
- if the message is a vocal type you listen to the recording (a
password can be required to enter the mailbox), if the
message is a “recall me” type, the extension which left the
message is automatically recalled.
10.4. Callback on busy subscriber/trunk line
If the called subscriber is busy it is possible to make a callback:

- dial the “automatic callback” suffix
- wait for a tone of confirmation
The callback is signalled with a callback rhythm ringer.
To answer a callback from extension, lift the handset.
To answer a callback from a trunk line, lift the handset and dial the
telephone number (or the speed number if the callback was made
after a speed dialling).
10.5. Callback on no answer subscriber
To make a callback on no answer subscriber:
- if the subscriber does not answer dial the “automatic
callback” code , hang up the handset
- you will be advised with a special tone as soon as the desired
extension uses his telephone.
10.6. Changing the enabling class with password
To change your personal class with password:
- dial the “personal class of service change“ prefix
- dial your [personal password]
- confirm with the [#] key
- dial the number of the desired class:
0 - AREA CLASS
•1 - 1st enabling class associated to the telephone
•2 - 2nd enabling class associated to the telephone
•3 - 3rd enabling class associated to the telephone
The acceptance of the service is signalled through a dedicated tone
on the handset.

10.7. Changing the password
To change the password on your telephone.
- lift the handset or enable hands-free service
- dial the “change password“ prefix
- dial your [telephone number]
- confirm the selection with the [#] key
- dial the [old password] (1)
- confirm the selection with the [#] key
- dial the [new personal password], then confirm the
selection with the [#] key
- dial again the [new personal password], then confirm the
selection with the [#] key
- wait for a tone of service enabling and hang up.
(1) initially the system assign to all users the password “111111”.
10.8. Forwarding calls
To forward calls towards another extension, because the first one
does not answer or is busy, ask to the administrator of the system.
To always forward calls directed to you towards another destination:
- dial the “activate variable call forwarding“ or “request
variable controlled forwarding for another extension
prefix
- dial [your extension number] followed by the [#] key
- dial the [number of the user that receives the forwarding
calls] (can be an internal number or an external number,
comprehensive of the access code to the trunk line) followed
by the [#] key; you will hear a tone of confirmation.
To enable the forwarding service towards the programmed
destination:
- dial the “activate fixed call forwarding prefix
; service is enabled when you hear a
tone of confirmation

or
- if customized, press [Fixed_forward_1] or [FORWARD]
function key: the LED associated to the key lights red;
service is enabled when you hear a tone of confirmation.
If the telephone is enabled to the “Director functions”, a second
destination of “fixed forward” is possible only if, in the telephone
profile, a function key is configured as [Fixed_forward_2] or
[FORW_DIR_SEC]; to activate it:
- press the key configured as [Fixed_forward_2] or
[FORW_DIR_SEC]: the LED associated to the key lights
red; service is enabled when you hear a tone of
confirmation.
To cancel the forward from your telephone, first lift the handset or
activate the hands-free service, then:
- dial the “deactivate variable/fixed call forwarding“ prefix
; cancellation of forwarding call is
signalled by a tone of confirmation. If your telephone has a
programmed function key, the service of fixed forwarding
can be cancelled by pressing again the same key, the LED
associated to the key turns off.
10.9. Do not Disturb: enabling/disabling
You do not want to receive calls from internal extensions and possible
from external calls.
To enable the service:
- lift the handset
- dial the “do not disturb activation“ prefix
and wait for a tone of confirmation or, if
customized, press the [DO NOT DISTURB] key: the LED
associated to the key is steady red.
To disable the service:
- lift the handset
