50.,,capstan stand (A)
How to convert the 50
set into a 60
set :
Model RQ - 702 has been made to operate from 50 AC
mains. To operate it from 60
AC mains a little modifi-
cation is necessary, which is very easy.
Take the head cover off by pulling it up. Then take the
50
capstan off and place it on the 50
capstan stand.
Secure the capstan with the screw. By removing the 50
capstan, the tape is adapted to play from 60
mains.
How to thread tape:
Place the supplied reel with tape on the left side reel table (supply reel table) and the empty reel on the
right reel table (take-up reel table).
Draw about 1.5 feet of tape out of the left reel. Hold about
3
/
4
. feet of tape between the both hands over
the head-cover.
In
this case the glossy side of the tape should face the operator's side and the lusterless,
side of tape should face the other side. Drop the stretched tape into the head-cover gap.
Insert the loose end of the tape in the slot of the take-up reel. While holding the end of the tape turn
the take-up reel counterclockwise a few revolutions.
Plug the power supply cord into the AC socket.
Switch the set on
by turning the right side knob (on-off
switch and volume control) clockwise.
The pilot lamp will be lighted up.
About 30 seconds later, the tape recorder gets ready for
operation.
RECORDING
How to select tape speed :
This tape recorder plays at 3 speeds ( 1
Vis,
3
3
%,
and 7 zz
i. p. s.)
Set the speed selector knob at the desired position before
the tape is played. Do not change speed while operating the
set.
Tape speed is preferably varied to suit the recording pur-
poses.
Higher speed offers better sound quality and lower
speed offers longer playing time with the same quality and
length of tape. See the table below for playing time and
recording purposes.

Tape counter
Set the tape counter to "0 0 0"
by turning the disc beside the
indicator forward. The built-in
tape counter can be conveniently
used to get the beginning and
the end of recorded programs.

How to record :
(1)
Press the recording button. The magic-eye (recording level indicator) will be lighted up. The tape will
not yet run.
(2)
Plug the microphone into the front microphone socket.
(3)
Speak into the microphone at medium sound volume keeping
— 7" distance between the mouth and
the microphone.
(4)
While speaking into the microphone, watch the magic-eye.
When the green wings are open and do not move, recording will not be made.
When the wings meet each other and do not get apart, reproduced sound will
be distorted (though recording is possible).
When the wings move corresponding to the sound volume optimum recording
is made.
For adjustment turn the volume control knob clockwise or counterclockwise.

can be played.
REPRODUCTION
(1)
To rewind the tape push the rewind button. Find the
point where reproduction should be started by means of
the built-in tape counter.
(2)
After the starting point has been found, press the play-
back button.
Obtain the optimum sound volume and quality with the
volume control and the tone control.
Do not press the recording button and the playback
button at the same time for reproduction. If they are pressed
—8—
at the same time, recorded programmes will be erased.
INSTANT STOP
The instant stop button can be conveniently used during
recording and reproduction.
The tape stops when the button is pressed and runs again
when it is released.
ERASING
(1) Set the volume control knob at the minimum position.
Remove the microphone from the microphone socket.
Then press the recording button and the playback button
at the same time.
There is no need of erasing a reel of tape in order to
record a new programme on it, since the tape is automatical-
ly erased before it is recorded. That is because the tape
passes the erasing head before it passes the recording head.
— 9
FAST FORWARD
To get the point of program where reproduction is desired
to start, the fast forward mechanism can be conveniently
used.
Press the fast forward button and find the desired point by
means of the tape counter.
How to record phonograph
(1)
Plug the supplied connection cord into the radio jack
(black jack)
(2)
Connect the clips of the connection cord with the output
terminals of a phonograph player.
(3)
Control the recording sound volume with the volume
control of the phonograph. The volume control of the tape
recorder may be also used.
(4)
Push the recording button. Control the volume watching
the magic-eye.
(5)
When the optimum sound volume is obtained, push the
playback button while pressing the recording button and
play the phonograph from the beginning.
— 10 —
How to record radio programme :
(1)
Plug the connection cord into the radio jack of the tape recorder.
(2)
Nip the speaker voice coils of the radio set with the black and red clips of the connection ',cord.
If the radio set produces noise by the above setting, interchange the black and red clips.
(3)
Adjust the volume and quality of the radio set to get most agreeable sound.
(4)
Push the recording button of the tape recorder and cont-
rol the sound volume watching the magic-eye.
(5)
After sound level has been adjusted, push the playback
button, while securing the recording button at the pressed
position.
How to take copy of recorded tape:
(1)
Two tape recorders are required for this purpose.
(2)
Plug a connection cord into the external speaker jack of
the tape recorder on which the recorded tape is played.
Plug another connection cord into the radio jack of the
tape recorder on which blank tape is played.
(3)
Connect the clips of the connection cords. Connect the
same colours.
—11—
(4)
Playback the recorded tape and adjust the volume and tone.
(5)
Press the recording button of the tape recorder with the blank tape and adjust the recording volume.
(6)
Rewind the recorded tape to the starting point. Set the tape recorder with the blank tape in recording
operation, then playback the recorded tape.
How to operate an external speaker :
(1)
Plug the connection cord into the external speaker jack
of the tape recorder.
(2)
Nip the speaker voice coils with the red and black clips
of the connection cord. In this case there is no specifica-
tion as to connect which of the clips with which side of the
voice coils.
The voice coil impedance is preferably exactly or near 3n.
(3)
Playback the tape.
How to use the earphone :
Two earphone sockets are provided for monitoring and for private listening.
(1) For monitoring of recording, either of the two sockets can be used. The two sockets can be used at the
same time.
— 12—
(2) While playing back both sockets can be used. By plugg-
ing an earphone into the right socket, the built-in speaker
is cut off for private listening.
How to splice tape
(1)
Pile about one inch of broken tape ends. Cut them diag-
onally about 45°.
(2)
Align the cut ends carefully making the cut sides meet
each other with the glossy side of the tape up.
(3)
Prepare about 1
1
4" of splicing tape, apply it on the cut
ends and press it.
(4)
Trim the splicing tape a little concave.
Never use a tape other than those specially designed for
this purpose. The adhesive material may stain the mag-
netic heads and other parts.

MAINTENANCE
Model RQ-702 operates very well without any maintenance. But good maintenance, that is cleaning and
lubrication, prolongs the life of a machine very much. To obtain perfect performance, good care is recom-
mended.
How to take off head cover, etc. :
(1)
Head cover
Pull the head cover up.
(2)
Mount
Take the knobs off by loosening the screws. Loosen the two screws at the front corners of the panel.

(3) Panel
After the head cover and the mount has been taken off, loosen the two screws at the farther corners of
the panel.
Take off the screws beside the tape guide pins and take the panel up.
Where to clean:
(1) Clean with a piece of soft cloth the magnetic head, the capstan, the pinch roller and the tape guides
— 15 —
which are always contact with recording tape and receive dust and minute powder from the tape.

(2)
Once in a while clean the circumferential sides of roller, the rubber belt, the reel table, the motor pulley
and the flywheel.
(3)
Recommended wash is benzine or carbon tetra-chloride.
(4) Once a year lubricate the points indicated with arrow with
lubricating oil. The best way is to use a needle.
One or two drops are enough. Excessive oil may cause
slips in mechanism.
