1. EARLY LAMP FAILURE DUE TO LAMP TOP
FAN OXIDATION
1.1 Problem
Description
In a highly humid environment the lamp top fans can be subject to oxidation, the moving
parts (shaft) of the fan can then grip or even block. This will decrease the fan speed and
thus decrease the airfl
ow at the lamp top.
Since the “top” of the lamp is the most critical part towards cooling, the lamp may break
down prematurely (far before rea ching its normal end of life time).
This has been observed on projectors equipped with the previous version of this fan, since
2004 the projectors are equipped with more corrosion resistant fans. The difference be-
tween the 2 types o f
fans can be de term ined visually by checking the year of production.
The lamp top fans are the 2 small fans located on the rear of the projector.
Where ?
Projectors running in very humid regions (SE Asia,...) or applications are very likely to
develop this error.
When to check ?
Systematic early lamp f ailure (on the same projector) can be caused by fan oxidation.
How to check ?
The fans are labeled with a serial number : in this example I2517 (2 stands for Year 2002).
Fans with Year
number x4xxx (o r higher ) should not present this extreme oxidation.
In case of a fan with number lower than x4xxx the oxidation state can be checked by simply
removing the label covering the fan bearing.
Place this label back to prevent dirt from entering.

Replace both fans (for lamp1 and lamp2) i.e. 2 kits must be ordered
1.3 Replacing the fans
How to remove the lamp top fans ?
1.Remove the lamps
2.Disconnect the fan(s) by pulling out the connectors C (image 1-2)
3.Loosen and remove the screws (1) or (2) depending on the fan to be removed
4.Remove the fan(s)
5.Mount the new fans by handling in the sam e way
