Software Update Instructions for the RCA BRC3109 Portable Blu-ray Player

You can use a USB Flash Drive or a Writable CD to update your BRC3109. We recommend using

a USB Flash Drive since it’s quicker and easier. However, if you don’t have a USB Flash Drive, please see

page three of these instructions for directions on performing update using a Writable CD.

Software Update using a USB Flash Drive

1. Download the compressed (“zipped”) software file (it’s named “BRC3109_Ver_2_0_7428.zip”)

and then decompress (“unzip”) the file. You can unzip the file by “right-clicking” on it using your

mouse, and then selecting the “extract all” option.

2. You should then see an “index.img” file and a “ULA_SWUPGD” folder. Copy these to a USB

Flash Drive. You can use any size USB Flash Drive up to a max capacity of 32GB. The Flash

Drive should be formatted as FAT16 or FAT32 (almost all are formatted as FAT16 or FAT32

already).

Note: please ensure you copy it to the “root” of the Flash Drive (don’t copy it to a folder on the

Flash Drive).

3. Turn on your BRC3109. If you have a disc (Blu-ray, DVD or CD) already loaded, we recommend

you remove the disc.

4. Insert your Flash Drive into USB port located on the front panel of the BRC3109.

5. The BRC3109 should recognize the new software on your Flash Drive. If your BRC3109 is not

already up to date it will bring up instructions for you to follow (skip directly to Step 7 below).

If your BRC3109 is up to date, you’re done! Congratulations! No need to proceed with further

steps.

6. Manual Update: Only perform steps a, b and c if you feel that the BRC3109 has not recognized

that a software update is available, and you feel that the downloaded software might be a

newer version

a) Press the SETUP button on your BRC3109 Remote Control, and then select the

“General” menu.

b) Select the “Software Update” option. You should see a “Choose device -> USB” option

– select this.

c) BRC3109 will display a screen indicating the version number of current software and the

version number of the downloaded software. Only proceed with updating if the version

number of the current software on BRC3109 is older (smaller number) than the

downloaded version.

7. You’ll then see a “Software Update” screen. Please be patient during this process, follow the

onscreen instructions carefully, and ensure that you DO NOT turn off the product during this

process.

8. Once the update is complete, you’ll see a message asking you to restart the BRC3109 – please

do so. (Note: the BRC3109 may restart automatically).

9. Congratulations! You’ve now completed the update process!

Software Update using a Writable CD

1. Download the compressed (“zipped”) software file (it’s named “BRC3109_Ver_2_0_7428.zip”)

and then decompress (“unzip”) the file. You can unzip the file by “right-clicking” on it using your

mouse, and then selecting the “extract all” option.

2. You should then see an “index.img” file and a “ULA_SWUPGD” folder. Insert a new, writable CD

(eg, CD-R) into your PC’s disc drive. Copy and write (sometimes called “burning”) these files to

the CD.

Note: please ensure you copy them to the “root” of the CD (don’t copy them to a folder on the

CD).

Note: In order to play a writable CD on your BRC3109, the CD must be “mastered” or

“finalized”. Windows VISTA does not automatically do this; you’ll need to change a setting when

you’re burning the disc. To do this:

(1) Insert new, empty, burnable CD (e.g., CD-R) into your computer’s disc drive, a Pop-

Up Window should appear

(2) Select “Burn files to disc” option

(3) A “Prepare this disc” Pop-Up Window should appear

(4) Select “Show formatting options” icon to show expanded options

(5) Select the “Mastered” option.

3. Turn on your BRC3109 and load the CD you’ve just burned.

4. The BRC3109 should recognize the new software on your CD. If your BRC3109 is not already up

to date it will bring up instructions for you to follow (skip to Step 6 below). If your BRC3109 is

up to date, you’re done! Congratulations! No need to proceed with further steps.
