BIOSareaprogramlocatedonaFlashmemorychiponacircuitboard.Itisusedto
initializeandsetuptheI/Operipheralsandinterfacecardsofthe system,which
includestime,date,harddiskdrive,theISAbusandconnecteddevicessuchasthe
videodisplay,diskettedrive,andthekeyboard.Thisprogramwillnotbelostwhen
youturnoffthesystem.
TheBIOSprovidesamenudriveninterfacetotheconsolesubsystem.Theconsole
subsy stemcontainsspecialsoftware,calledfirmwarethatinteractsdirectlywiththe
hardwarecomponentsandfacilitatesinteractionbetweenthesystemhardwareand
theoperatingsystem.
TheBIOSdefaultvaluesensurethatthesystemwillfunctionatitsnormalcapability.
Intheworstsituationtheusermayhavecorruptedtheoriginalsettingssetbythe
manufacturer.
AllthechangesyoumakewillbesavedinthesystemRAMandwillnotbelostafter
poweroff.
Whenyoustartthesystem,theBIOSwillperformaselfdiagnosticstestcalledPower
OnSelfTest(POS T)forallthe attacheddevices,accessories,andthesystem.Press
the[Del]keytoentertheBIOSSetupprogram,andthenthemainmenuwillshowon
thescreen.
