5. Prior to starting the Bench Top Planer, make sure all adjusting keys and
wrenches are removed from the tool.
6. To avoid damage to the Blades (part #22), make sure to check the workpiece for
any foreign materials such as nails, screws, or hard impurities in the wood. Also
check for loose knots in the wood.
7. The Power Switch (part #21A*) is located on the front of the Bench Top Planer.
To start the Planer, lift the yellow Safety Switch Cover. Then, depress the Power
Switch to its “ON” position. (See Figure F.)
8. Before cutting, turn on the Bench Top Planer and check for excessive machine
vibration. If this is found, turn off the machine and correct the problem before
using.
9. Allow the Blades (part #22) to turn up to full speed before feeding the workpiece
into the Blades. When turning off the Bench Top Planer, allow the Blades to slow
down and stop on their own. Do not press against the Blades to stop them.
10. When feeding the workpiece, use a push block (not included) to feed the
workpiece rather than using your hands. The push block must be thinner than

11. When planing a large workpiece, make sure its entire length is properly sup-
ported. If necessary, use a roller stand (not included) with a larger workpiece.
12. Stand off to one side, and feed the workpiece into the Blades (part #22)
gradually. Do not force the machine to remove material faster than it was de-
signed to cut.
13. After each planing, you can use the Rollers (part #7) on top of the Bench Top

PLANING TIPS
Adjusting Warp:
1. Warp is a variation from a plane or true surface. Warping of wood is caused by
uneven shrinkage during the drying process. (See Figure G.)
2. The ideal is to have a straight board with no warp, which allows you to feed both
sides of the board through the Bench Top Planer to plane to the desired thick-
ness.
3. With a board having a cup warp, you should first plane the top flat and then turn
the board over and plane the bottom flat. If possible, rip the board down the
middle of the cup. This will eliminate a large amount of waste in the planing
process. (See Figure G.)
Grain Direction:
1. Feeding the board into the Bench Top Planer, with the grain, is feeding so that
the Blades (part #22) travel in the same direction as the slant of the grain.
(See Figure G.)
2. Grain patterns often have a “V” shape. The point of the “V” should point away
from the Blades (part #22) while feeding. (See Figure G.)
3. Occasionally, the grain direction reverses in the same piece of wood. For best
planing results, cut the board in half so that each section can be planed with the
grain.

INSPECTION, MAINTENANCE, AND CLEANING
1. CAUTION: Always turn the Power Switch (part #21A*) to its “OFF” position
and unplug the Power Cord (part #22A*) from its 120 volt electrical outlet
before performing any inspection, adjustments, maintenance, or cleaning.
2. BEFORE EACH USE, inspect the general condition of the Bench Top Planer and
Stand. Check for loose screws, loose parts, misalignment or binding of moving
parts, cracked or broken parts, damaged electrical wiring, and any other condi-
tion that may affect its safe operation. If abnormal noise or vibration occurs, have
the problem corrected before further use.
Do not use damaged equipment.
3. DAILY: With a soft brush, cloth, or vacuum, remove all sawdust, wood chips, and
debris from the Bench Top Planer and Stand. Then, use a premium quality,
lightweight machine oil to lubricate all moving parts.
4. AFTER PLANING APPROXIMATELY 50 FEET OF MATERIAL, turn off the
Bench Top Planer and unplug it from its electrical outlet. Then, check the Screws
(part #19) connecting the Gib (part #23) and Blades (part #22) to the Cutterhead
(part #20) for tightness. (See Figure E.)
