Troubleshooting
No sound
Check the Audio or video connection between the DVD player and the TV. (example; composite
red and white audio cables, HDMI cable)
Turn on your TV and set the TV to the correct input the DVD player is connected to on the TV.
During playback of DTS source, there will be no sound from the speakers. Select a different
audio source (e.g. Dolby Digital). (for DVD-S700 model only) or please connect the unit to an AV
receiver that can decode DTS via an HDMI terminal, and set “Audio Out” to “Bitstream". See
How to set Audio Out to Bitstream or PCM.
Audio Out sets the audio output method when connected to the “HDMI AV OUT” terminal.
1. Press [SETUP].
2. Press []/[] to select "AUDIO, and press [].
3. Press []/[] to select "Audio Out" and press [] to conrm your selection.
4. Press []/[] to select "Bistream" or "PCM"and press [OK].
o To return the previous menu, press w.
o To exit, press [SETUP].
Note:
Select Bitstream when the connected equipment is supporting Dolby Digital.
Select PCM when the connected equipment is not supporting Dolby Digital.
Messages on the screen - "Cannot read. Please check the disc."
An incompatible disc is inserted. (Video CD, etc).
Messages on the screen - "Cannot read. Please check the disc."
An incompatible disc is inserted. (Video CD, etc).
Messages on the screen - "No disc inserted."
The disc may be upside down.
Messages on the unit’s display - "NO READ"
The media is dirty or badly scratched. The unit cannot play.Try another disc and confirm if the disc plays.
If the player is unable to play all the discs, then it will require service. Press and hold [OPEN/CLOSE] to
eject disc.
Forgot the rating levels password. - DVD-S700, DVD-S500
1. The password is required when setting or canceling the playback limitation or restoring the unit
to the factory default. When doing this for the first time, key in “0000”. If you forget your old
four-digit password, key in “0000”.
2. To reset the DVD player press [POWER] on the DVD player to turn it on.
3. Press [OPEN/CLOSE] ; to open the disc tray.
4. Press the number button “5” on the remote control 4 times. (The power is automatically turned
off.) All the settings return to the factory preset.
Cannot play a DVD disc from a different country.
This unit plays DVD-Video marked with labels containing the region number “1” or “ALL”.
Example DVD - Video
Not able to select some items in the menu.
1. Press STOP [] twice before selecting the setup/system menu.
2. Depending on the disc availability, some menu items cannot be selected.
Rented discs will not play.
Try a disc that you own to see if it plays. If it does play then there could be a problem with the
borrowed or rented disc.
Try cleaning the disc with a soft cloth to remove any fingerprints or smudges.
No Power.
Try the following:
Plug the power cord into another power receptacle.
Check connections to the AC adaptor or battery pack.
If using a power strip or surge protector bypass that device for this test.
Check the wall receptacle with a lamp or other small appliance to verify power is available.
(Keep in mind that some outlets may have a ground fault circuit interrupter that needs to be
reset or a light switch the must be turned on to allow power to the outlet.)
If no power is coming from the outlet check the circuit breaker or fuse box of your home to
make sure that none of the breakers have been tripped.
[DVD-LS82] You cannot turn on the unit with the remote control if the unit is powered by the
battery pack.
The unit has protection circuitry that is activated if it becomes too hot or too cold. The unit will
not work if this occurs. Use the unit between 5 °C and 35 °C.
Discs cannot be played back.
Check for any scratches or smudges on the disc. If the disc is dirty, clean the disc.
How to clean the DVD player.
To clean this unit, wipe with a soft, dry cloth;
Use eyeglass cleaner to remove stubborn dirt from the LCD
Never use alcohol, paint thinner or benzine to clean this unit.
Maintenance of the lens;
Remove dust carefully with an air blower for camera lenses (optional).
Recommended product:
Lens cleaner kit (SZZP1038C) or (RP-CL720PP). For model DMR-ES30 use LF-K123LCA1 or RP-
CL720.(Available from Panasonic dealers.)
You cannot use a CD type lens cleaner.
Be careful not to touch the lens with your fingers.
To clean discs;
Wipe with a damp cloth and then wipe dry.
Disc handling precautions
Do not attach labels or stickers to discs (This may cause disc warping, rendering it unusable).
Do not write on the label side with a ball-point pen or other writing instrument.
Do not use record cleaning sprays, benzine, thinner, static electricity prevention liquids or any
other solvent.
Do not use scratch-proof protectors or covers.
Do not drop stack, or impact discs. Do not place objects on them.
To protect discs from scratches and dirt, return them to their cases or cartridges when you are
not using them.
Do not use the following discs:
Discs with exposed adhesive from removed stickers or labels (rented discs etc).
Discs that are badly warped or cracked.
Irregularly shaped discs, such as heart shapes.
Observe the following points to ensure continued listening and viewing pleasure. Dust and dirt may
adhere to the unit’s lens over time, possibly making it impossible to record or play discs. Use the lens
cleaner about once every year, depending on frequency of use and the operating environment. Carefully
read the lens cleaner’s instructions before use.
There are black bars on the screen when using a Home Theater System, DVD or Blu-ray player.
BLACK BARS ON TOP / BOTTOM:
Most movies are filmed in a format wider than your TV's 16:9 aspect ratio. Some discs adjust the picture
to eliminate the borders while other discs keep the film's original format.
When the disc's content is in wide-screen format, then black bars are displayed at the top and bottom of
the picture.
BLACK BARS ON LEFT / RIGHT:
Older content is filmed in 4:3 (old TV) format. When playing 4:3 content on your HD TV set, black bars
are displayed on each side of the screen.
To eliminate the side bars, change your TV's FORMAT (aspect) settings. For example, Panasonic TV's
have a format mode called "JUST" which is specially designed to stretch a 4:3 image to fill the screen.
Press the [FORMAT] or [ASPECT] button on the TV remote to remove the black bars from the top and
bottom . The option available to remove the horizontal bars is "Zoom".
Note: If bars remain.
Check the aspect settings on your external video source, such as Cable/ Satellite box, DVD/Blu-
ray Disc player, etc.
Some content, such as film-based movies, are available in extra-wide format. Top and bottom
bars are unavoidable
The image s distorted. Noise occurs.
Confirm with another source if the image is distorted.
Check if the TV System setting is correct.
Confirm that the cable connections are working correctly with another source. If not replace the
cable.
No picture
Check the video connection between the DVD player and the TV.
Turn on your TV and set the TV to the correct input the DVD player is connected to on the TV.
The remote control does not work
Aim the remote control directly at the sensor on the front of the DVD player.
Check that the batteries are fresh, are of the same type and are installed with the correct
polarity (+ & -).
Do not mix old and new batteries.
Do not mix different battery types (such as alkaline and -manganese batteries).
Do not use rechargeable (Ni-Cd) batteries.
