Troubleshooting errors with automatic probe changing
By Aaron Wilt, Technical Support Specialist
Problem: CMM fails to drop off or pick up a probe from the holder rack during automatic probe changes
in Calypso. The machine may travel to the correct area but doesn’t quite line up with the holder
properly.
Troubleshooting steps:
First, we need to check the alignment of the probe holder rack. The rack should be aligned within
0.1mm from end to end, parallel to a given axis (depends on CMM type and size). Use the CMM to
probe two points on a surface parallel to the aligned axis (X in the example below), but on opposite ends
of the rack. If necessary, loosen the bolts securing the rack to the table and adjust the placement until
the coordinates are within 0.1mm of each other. Once finished adjusting, re-tighten the bolts to secure
the rack and doublecheck the alignment once fixed.
Second step is to redefine the holder locations through Calypso using the master probe. Place the
master probe plate onto the sensor and perform the manual pick up command. If applicable, articulate
the carrier to the angular position necessary to interact with the probe holder rack (RDS articulating
carrier with XXT sensor)*.
Open the automatic stylus change window.
Now click the Define Stylus Length button in the upper right corner of the window.
Now follow the onscreen prompt to probe on the stylus plate like so:
Next probe the same surface with the stylus tip:
You will see a dialog window showing the stylus length calculated.
Now left click on the graphic to select the probe holder you want to locate. Right-click and select Define
Holder Location.
Follow the prompt and position the stylus above the holder’s locating feature.
For the XXT probe holder this feature is a half-sphere-shaped indentation on the left most holder in the
grouping of 3.
When you click OK the machine will lower itself down and find the feature. The color of the holder
graphic will change to show that the holder location has been defined.
Execute the above steps for each holder you have on your rack. Then test the automatic probe change.

steps for other sensor types are similar. Please review your CMM operating manual or consult the Zeiss
