1. THE MANUFACTURE AUDEMARS PIGUET
T he Vallée de Joux : cradle of the watchmaker’s art
In the heart of the Swiss Jura, around 50 kilometres
miles north Geneva, nestles a landscape which has retained its
natural charm to this day : the Vallée de Joux. Around the mid-
18th century, the harsh climate of this mountainous region and
soil depletion drove the farming community settled there to
seek other sources of income. With their high degree of manual
dexterity, inexhaustible creativity and enormous determination,
the inhabitants of the valley, known as Combiers, were naturally
drawn to watchmaking.
Due to their high quality, the movements they produced acquired
great popularity with the Geneva firms which used them to create
complete watches.
From 1740 onwards, watchmaking developed into the principal
industry of the Vallée de Joux. us, this region was transformed,
as an 1881 chronicle put it, «into a land of milk and honey, in
which poverty has rapidly disappeared».
T wo names for a great adventure
After working together closely from 1875, the two young
and highly talented watchmakers Jules-Louis Audemars and
Edward-Auguste Piguet founded their own company on
17 December 1881 at Le Brassus, to which they gave the name
“La Manufacture d’horlogerie Audemars Piguet et Cie. e
former had Huguenot roots and the latter came from one of the
oldest families in the Vallée de Joux. Seldom does one witness
an encounter between two such promising individuals as these
exceptionally talented young watchmakers. From the beginning,
Jules-Louis Audemars took on the role of technical manager,
whilst Edward-Auguste Piguet dealt mainly with the financial
side of the business. Dividing responsibilities in this way worked
so well that it is the system which has been used by virtually every
succeeding generation, up to the present day.
As early as 1889, the young firm was able to provide a spectacular
demonstration of its abilities at the tenth Paris Exhibition : for
the first time, a Grande-Complication watch was on show. From
the outset, it earned Audemars Piguet distinction and recogni-
tion, and even today is regarded as one of the company’s best
products. Besides the display for hours, minutes and seconds, this
amazingly intricate pocket-watch also features a minute-repeater
striking mechanism, a chronograph with dragging hand and a
perpetual calendar.
Subsequently, the relatively young name began to establish itself
astonishingly quickly on the demanding market for complica-
tion watches. As well as the regional agencies already founded in
London and Paris, more were soon opened in Berlin, New York
and Buenos Aires.
By 1907, the steady growth rate necessitated the construction of
a second building. In 2000, coinciding with the company’s 125th
anniversary, another modern production building was built in
line with current quality criteria. Both buildings are located right
next to the original building, which today houses the Audemars
Piguet Museum.
In the early years of the 20th century, the company’s founders
embarked in earnest upon a quest for a completely new type
of watch, which despite considerable resistance began to gain
ground : the wristwatch. Once again, it was the complex models
that earned Audemars Piguet particular recognition. Ultra-
thin or extra small minute repeater movements made their
appearance, as well as calendar and chronograph movements.

After Alinghi’s victory in 2003, Audemars Piguet decided to set
off on a new adventure with the holders of the Americas Cup
title, and accompany them through to the next regatta in 2007.
For the valiant yachtsmen of the “Silver Mug” and all their
supporters, the manufacture has designed an innovative chrono-
graph watch: the Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Polaris, with a new
movement including a totally unprecedented regatta flyback
function.
A new calibre
An exceptional watch requires a specific movement. For this
reason Audemars Piguet specifically designed the new selfwinding
2326/2847 calibre for the Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Polaris.
In addition to indicating the hours and minutes, the movement
has a small second at 3 o’clock. The chronograph, with central
sweep hand, has a 6-hour counter (at 6 o’clock) and a 20 minutes
counter (at 9 o’clock). The dial bears the Alinghi logo. In
addition, the flyback chronograph has a 10 minutes counter at
its centre. The aperture at 12 o’clock turns to red for the last
minute prior to the start of the regatta.

down to the present day in which traditional craftsmanship and

this surely lies in the fact that the business is still to this day the

3. BASIC FUNCTIONS
3.1 Setting the watch time
Unscrew the crown and pull it out to position B. The hands can
then be easily wound forwards or backwards to set the time.
3.2 Stopping the balance when setting the time
The seconds hand is automatically stopped by pulling the winder
crown thereby enabling precise setting.
3.3 Rewinding the movement
If the watch stops, 10 revolutions of the crown (in position A)
are sufficient to start it again. It is then wound by the simple
movement of the watch on the wearers wrist.
NB : Be sure to return the crown to position A and screw it
back in.

4.3 “Regatta” function with flyback
4.3.1 First warning signal
Eleven minutes before the official crossing of the start / finish
line, start the chronograph using the pushpiece at 2 o’clock (C).
Simultaneously, chronograph hand 4, the red regatta hand 5
and counters (7 and 8) will start.
4.3.2 Second warning signal (flyback function)
Ten minutes before the official crossing of the start / finish line,
press the pushpiece at 4 o’clock (D) and activate the flyback
function. This immediately zeroes all chronograph functions
and the chronograph instantly starts again. This is the signal that
tells crews they only have ten minutes until the start of the race,
to stow the sail and other equipment. The final details about the
weather conditions can also be discussed with the base.

4.3.4 Final minute before start
One minute before the official crossing of the start / finish line,
when the chronograph starts to countdown the last ten minutes
(5), counter (6) starts up. This warns the person wearing the
watch that the race will officially start in one minute. Again, no
function is activated on the watch.
4.3.3 Third warning signal
The signal indicating five minutes remain before the official
crossing of the start / finish line is for information only. No func-
tion is activated on the watch. The counters (4, 5 and 7) indicate
the remaining five minutes. All contact between the crew and
their base must cease.

4.4 Flange function
4.4.1 Countdown (or timer) function
With the countdown function, you can, without starting the
chronograph, measure a period of up to 60 minutes using the
rotating flange and the minute hand. To activate this function :
1 Unscrew crown E, it releases the flange which you can now
rotate.

Position the desired duration, for example 20 opposite the
minute hand (2). The time will have elapsed when the
minute hand reaches position N (= 0) on the flange.
4.3.5 Fourth warning signal, crossing the start line
This is the signal giving the green light to officially cross the
start/finish line. It is shown by counters 4, 5, 6 and 7. From this
moment on, the chronograph can be left to follow the race after
activating the flyback function to zero all counters.

4.4.2 Orientation function
Your watch is fitted with an orientation function that you can
use to find geographic north. Make sure that N (North) on the
rotating flange is positioned at 12 o’clock (9).
Turn the watch so that the hour hand is pointing towards the
sun (F). On the dial, read the figure indicated by the hour hand
(G).
Divide this figure by 2 (for example 4 : 2 = 2), remember its
position on the dial (in our example, 2 o’clock) and then position
south on the navigation flange at 2 o’clock (H). In our example,
geographic north is therefore at 8 o’clock (I).
5. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
Guarantee :
Your watch comes with a two-year worldwide guarantee effective
from the date of purchase. This guarantee covers all faults and/or
manufacturing defects.
Any work carried out on the watch outside our workshops will
automatically cancel this guarantee.
Water-resistance :
As stated on its guarantee certificate, this watch is water-
resistant to a depth of 100 metres.
Its water-resistance may be compromised by an accident
or contact with an aggressive substance (acid, perfume, liquid
metal, saline water, etc.). After an incident of this type, avoid
immersing the watch in water, and immediately have the watch
checked or verified by a water-resistance service..
Recommendations :
To ensure the reliability and precision of your watch, we recom-
mend it undergo a complete service every 4 to 6 years.
We recommend you have its water-resistance checked at least
every two years. This check is free, only the water-resistance cor-
rection (Water-resistance B1 service) and parts will be invoiced.
