Sharpenerdoesnotoperateatall(“dead”) 1) Checkthattheoutlethaspower,forexample,by
connectinganotherappliance.
2) AllXACTO®sharpenershaveaninterlockswitchthat
preventsoperationofthesharpener(cutters)when
theshavingsreceptacleisremoved.Thisfeatureis
usuallyactuatedby
apinonthebackofthe
receptacle.Checkthatthispinisintactandthatthe
receptacleisfullyinsertedintothesharpener.
3) Unplugthesharpenerandcheckthepowercordfor
damage,includingcutsorfraying.Donotuseany
sharpenerwithadamagedpowercordas
itcan
presentafireorelectricalshockhazard.
Sharpener“hums”whenapencilininserted
butthecuttersdonotrotate(ACmotor
models)
Ahumming(only)soundisanindicationthatthemotorhas
electricalpowerbutismechanicallyblocked.Thismaybe
causedbythefollowingconditions:
1) Checkthattheshavingsreceptaclehasbeenemptied.

severelyoverfilledreceptaclecancausepencil
shavingstobackupintotherotatingpartsandjam
them.
2) Checkthatthecutters,cuttercarrier,andtheinternal
gear(locatedatthebaseofhelicalcutters)arefreeof
excesspencilshavings.Iftheshavingsreceptaclehas
previouslybeenoverfilled,
theremayberesidual
shavingsremaininginsidetherotatingpartsofthe
sharpener.
Tocleartheshavings:
a) Unplugthesharpener.Removetheshavings
receptacle.
b) Whileholdingthesharpeneroverawastebasket,
gentlytapwithonthesideswiththepalmofa
handtofreeanylooseshavings.
c)
Inspectthecuttersandinternalgearforany
remainingpencilshavings(thisusuallyrequires
turningthesharpeneroverand/orholdingitatan
angle).Anyremainingshavingsintheinternalgear
canberemovedwithasmalltoolsuchasapaper
clip.
3) Checkforandremoveanyforeign
objectsinoraround
thecuttersorcuttergearsandinsidethepencilbore.
Toinspectthepencilbore,rotatethesizeselector,
wherepresent,tothelargestopening,andusea
slendertooltomovethepencilactuationbartothe
side.
Oncealloftheobstructionsareremoved,the

cutter/carriershouldnormallyrotaterelativelyeasilyby
handonACmotormodels.
Sharpener“hums”whenapencilininserted
innewproduct(ACmotormodels)
Thisisoftenanindicationofinternalshipping damage.The
cutter/carrierwillusuallyrotatefreely byhandbutwill
lockupwhenenergized.
Motorisrunningbutthecarrierisnot
rotating‐or‐loudgrindingnoise
Thiscanbeanindicationofgeardamageinsidethe
sharpenerandisnotuserserviceable.
Offcentersharpening/Sharpensoneside
only/Sharpenstoawoodpoint
Thisisacommoncustomercomplaint,butrarelyisitdueto
adefectinthesharpener.Whensharpenersareoperating
normally,thecutter(s)andcarrierrotateallthewayaround
thepencilmanytimessothatthey“see”allsides
ofthe
pencilequally.Whenthesharpeningisuneven/not
centered,itisusuallyduetosomeexternalfactors.
Thefollowingtipsarehelpful toobtainthebestresults:
1) Onmultisizepencilsharpeners,makesurethatyou
haveselectedtheholethatprovidesthebestfitfor
thepencil.
Any“slop”inthepencilfitwilltranslate
intosomeoffcenteredness.
2) Holdthepencilwitha“neutral”grip,notpressingitin
anydirection(up,down,le ft,orright).Anysideforce
onthepencilwilloffsetthecutting.
3) Keepthepencilincontactwiththecuttersbut
don’t
forceit.Letthecuttersdothework.
4) Yes,sometimesthegraphitecoreofthepencilisoffset
fromthecenterofthewoodcasing.Itseemstooccur
randomly(evenwithinthelengthofapencil)with
somebrandshavingtheissuemorethanothers.
5) If
youhaveastubbornpencil,youcanignorerule#2
andapplyaslightsideforceinthedirectionofthe
excessgraphitesidetotakeoffmoreofthewood.
Severeoffcentersharpening(tothepointwherethe
pencilisnotusableforwriting)cansometimesbecaused
by
aworninternalgear.Thisringshapedgearislocatedat
thebaseofthecutter(s).Internalgearwearmustbe
significant(visuallyobvious)tobethecauseofoffcenter
sharpening.
Cuttercarrierisrotatingbutthepencilis
notsharpening(doesn’tfeellikethecutter
isengagingthepencil)
Thisisusuallycausedbyaf oreignobject(e.g.,aneraseror
brokenpencillead)insidethepencilbore.Examinethe
pencilboreasinitem3ofthe“hums”sectionabove.
Ifthe
objectisloose,itmayfalloutthefrontofthesharpener.If
notloose,itmaybepossibletopushitloosefrominside
theshavingsreceptaclecompartmentwithapaperclip.Ifit
isnotpossibletodislodgetheobject,partialorfull
disassemblyofthe
sharpenermayberequired.
Forsharpenerswiththe“flyaway”cuttersystemwherethe
cutterismovedoutofthepencilboreoncesharpeningis
complete,itispossibleforthepenciltipslidetobejammed

(heldintheflyawayposition)byforeignobject.Tocheck
forthis,unplugthesharpener,removethereceptacle,and
turnthesharperover.Lookforandremoveanyforeign
objects(typicallybrokencoloredpencilcores)nearthe
chromeplatedpenciltipslide.
Roughsharpening Roughoperationisnormallycausedbyworncutters.To
inspectthecutters,unplugthesharpener,removethe
receptacle,andturnthesharperover.Examinethecutting
edgesofthehelicalcutter(s).Asmoothpolishedorglazed
appearance,especiallyneartheendwherethegraphiteis
sharpenedinanindication
oftheamountwear.Whenthe
cutteredgesareglazedacrossmostoftheirwidth,they
needtobereplaced.

necessarytorotatethecuttertoseveraldifferentpositions
toreachallofthegrooves.
Brokenpencilleads(sharpenerswithrazor
bladecutters)
Brokenpencilleadsanddull,glazed,orprotrudingpencil
