SAFETY INFORMATION FOR USERS OF LP-GAS
Propane(LP-Gas)isaammablegaswhichcancauseres
andexplosions.Initsnaturalstate,propaneisodorlessand
colorless.Youmaynotknowallthefollowingsafetyprecautions
whichcanprotectbothyouandyourfamilyfromanaccident.
Readthemcarefullynow,thenreviewthempointbypointwith
themembersofyourhousehold.Somedaywhentheremaynot
beaminutetolose,everyone'ssafetywilldependonknowing
exactlywhattodo.If,afterreadingthefollowinginformation,
youfeelyoustillneedmoreinformation,pleasecontactyour
gas supplier.
LP-GAS WARNING ODOR
Ifagasleakhappens,youshouldbeabletosmellthegas
becauseoftheodorantputintheLP-Gas.
That'syoursignaltogointoimmediateaction!
• Donotoperateelectricswitches,lightmatches,useyour
phone. Do not do anything that could ignite the gas.
• Geteveryoneoutofthebuilding,vehicle,trailer,orarea.Do
that IMMEDIATELY.
• Closeallgastankorcylindersupplyvalves.
• LP-Gasisheavierthanairandmaysettleinlowareassuchas
basements.Whenyouhavereasontosuspectagasleak,keep
outofbasementsandotherlowareas.Stayoutuntilreghters
declarethemtobesafe.
• Useyourneighbor'sphoneandcallatrainedLP-Gasservice
person and the re department. Even though you may not
continue to smell gas, do not turn on the gas again. Do not
re-enterthebuilding,vehicle,trailer,orarea.
• Finally,lettheservicemanandreghterscheckforescaped
gas.Havethemairouttheareabeforeyoureturn.Properly
trained LP-Gas service people should repair the leak, then
checkandrelightthegasapplianceforyou.
NO ODOR DETECTED - ODOR FADE
Some people cannot smellwell. Some people cannot smell
theodorofthechemicalputintothegas.Youmustndoutif
youcansmelltheodorantinpropane.Smokingcandecrease
yourabilitytosmell.Beingaroundanodorforatimecanaffectyour
sensitivityorabilitytodetectthatodor.Sometimesotherodorsin
theareamaskthegasodor.Peoplemaynotsmellthegasodoror
theirmindsareonsomethingelse.Thinkingaboutsmellingagas
odorcanmakeiteasiertosmell.
TheodorantinLP-gasiscolorless,anditcanfadeundersome
circumstances.Forexample,ifthereisanundergroundleak,the
movementofthegasthroughsoilcanltertheodorant.Odorantsin
LP-Gasalsoaresubjecttooxidation.Thisfadingcanoccurifthere
isrustinsidethestoragetankorinirongaspipes.
Theodorantinescapedgascanadsorborabsorbontoorintowalls,
masonryandothermaterialsandfabricsinaroom.
That will take some of the odorant out of the gas, reducing its
odor intensity. LP-Gas may stratify in a closed area, and the odor
intensity could vary at different levels. Since it is heavier than air,
theremaybemoreodoratlowerlevels.Alwaysbesensitivetothe
slightestgasodor.Ifyoudetectanyodor,treatitasaseriousleak.
Immediately go into action as instructed earlier.
SOME POINTS TO REMEMBER
• LearntorecognizetheodorofLP-gas.Your local LP-Gas
Dealer can give you a "Scratch and Sniff" pamphlet. Use it to
ndoutwhatthepropaneodorsmellslike.Ifyoususpectthat
yourLP-Gashasaweakorabnormalodor,callyourLP-Gas
Dealer.
• Ifyouarenotqualied,donotlightpilotlights,performservice,
ormakeadjustmentstoappliancesontheLP-Gassystem.If
youarequalied,consciouslythinkabouttheodorofLP-Gas
prior to and while lighting pilot lights or performing service or
makingadjustments.
• Sometimes a basement or aclosed-uphouse has a musty
smell that can cover up the LP-Gas odor. Do not try to light
pilotlights,performservice,ormakeadjustmentsinanarea
where the conditions are such that you may not detect the odor
iftherehasbeenaleakofLP-Gas.
• Odorfade,duetooxidationbyrustoradsorptiononwallsof
newcylindersandtanks,ispossible.Therefore,peopleshould
beparticularlyalertandcarefulwhennewtanksorcylinders
areplacedinservice.Odorfadecanoccurinnewtanks,or
reinstalledoldtanks,iftheyarelledandallowedtosettoo
longbeforerelling.Cylindersandtankswhichhavebeenout
of service for a time may develop internal rust which will cause
odor fade. If such conditions are suspected to exist, a periodic
snifftestofthegasisadvisable.If you have any question
about the gas odor, call your LP-gas dealer. A periodic
sniff test of the LP-gasisagoodsafetymeasureunder
any condition.
• Sooting: Avent-freereplaceorburnerdrawsroomairto
supportcombustion.Lightweightparticlessuspendedinthe
air–includingdust,carpetbers,candleortobaccosmoke,
andpethair–willbedrawntowardthereplace.These
canleadtosootbuilduponlogs,replacewalls,andeven
walls of the room. To prevent malfunctions and sooting, have
your dealer perform an inspection and cleaning each year
–beforetheheatingseason.Ifyouhavepetsorexcessive
dust,morefrequentcleaningmaybenecessary.See
cleaning and service section in this manual.
• Donotplaceembers(rockwool)inthisreplace.
• Donotplacelavarocksonburnerorlogs.
• Installingatelevisionaboveareplacehasbecomea
desirablefeature;however,thefollowinginformation
shouldbeconsidered.
Allreplaces,whetherdecorativeorheaterratedcreate
heat. Most television manufacturers recommend not
placing a television near a heat source. Because there is a
large variety of television manufactures, styles and sizes,
it is impractical to test every potential installation. If you
choosetoinstallatelevisionaboveornearyourreplace,
understand that Empire Comfort Systems accepts no
responsibilityforthisdecisionandanyinjuryordamagedue
tothisapplicationisthesoleresponsibilityoftheowner.
Additionally,itishighlyrecommendedtoturnoffthereplace
andletitcooldownbeforeservicingorusingtheoperational
buttonslocatedonthetelevision.Inallcases,thetelevision
manufacturer’sinstructionsandwarningsshouldbefollowed.
