Tecom TS1053 provides a GSM (wireless) connection to applications such as supported management software. This allows for remote monitoring and control of various systems and devices. TS1053 3G Communication Module
Installation Sheet
Description
The TS1053 3G Communication Module provides a GSM
(wireless) connection to applications such as supported
management software. Refer to (Figure 1 below) for details.

Installation
The interface module is plugged in to a Challenger Series
control panel PCB’s expander slot. Power to the panel must be
off during installation.
Note: A qualified service person, complying with all applicable
codes, should perform all required hardware installation.
In order to configure a TS1053 module, you need to have a
Micro SIM card from your carrier (for example, Telstra) to
provide a data connection via an access point name (APN).
You will need to enter (at least) the APN in Programming” on
page 2.
Note: Insert the Micro SIM card into the module only when the
Challenger panel is disconnected from all power sources or
before the module is installed.
To install a Micro SIM:
1. Slide the SIM holder cover to the open position, as shown
in Figure 2 below, item 2.
2. Gently lift the SIM holder cover to expose the SIM holder’s
terminals, item 3.
3. Insert
the Micro SIM with the contacts facing the terminals,
item 4.
4. Close the cover and move it to the lock position.

Note: Avoid touching the SIM holder’s terminals or the
Micro SIM’s contacts.

To install the module:
1. Disconnect the power supply and battery from the control
panel.
2. Carefully remove the module from its packaging, taking
care that none of the pins are bent.
3. Install a Micro SIM into the SIM1 holder.
4. Remove the antenna from its packaging and remove any
twists in the cable.
5. Insert the antenna’s male SMA connector into the
module’s female SMA connector (Figure 1 on page 1, item
1), and then tighten the nut to fully engage the cable (there
should be no screw threads visible).
6. Gently press the module into the socket until the module
sits firmly on the standoff and the three mounting holes
are aligned with the PCB studs.
7. Secure in place with the mounting screws (supplied).
8. Place the antenna in a location where the signal strength
will be acceptable (see “Checking the status via RASon
page 3). If the antenna cable needs to be run a distance
from the Challenger panel’s enclosure, you may wish to
run it via conduit for security.
9. Secure any excess antenna cable inside the Challenger
panel’s enclosure. Excess cable may be coiled into loops
no smaller than 200 mm.
10. Reconnect power to the control panel.
LED indications
Refer to Figure 1 on page 1. The LED indications are as
follows:
LED 1 Red (item 4) flashes if there is no Micro SIM card in
SIM1 or if the SIM is non-functional.
LED 2 Green (item 5) indicates radio signal condition. The
LED is off when the radio is not functional (for example,
the antenna is not connected). Refer to Table 1 below for
details of LED 2 indications.
LED 3 Green (item 2) is on when a data connection has
been opened (the communication path is enabled).
All LEDs off indicate that there is no antenna connected or
that the module has not been programmed.

Programming
The Challenger panel must be configured to use the TS1053
hardware (including the APN), and have a communications
path defined and enabled.
The following is a summary of the items to be configured via
the Install menu on an LCD RAS. (Alternatively, use Titan to
configure these options.)
To set up the hardware:
1. From the Install menu, select 9-Communications and then
1-Setup H/W, to select the Setup menu.
2. From the Setup menu, press [ENTER] to see the locations
and their menu numbers. For example, if the module is in
Expander 2, the menu number is 3 (for “3-EXP2-TS1053”).
3. Press the menu number (2 for Expander 1 or 3 for
Expander 2), and then press [ENTER].
4. Press [4] [ENTER] for a TS1053 module.
5. If required, enter the PIN, and then press [ENTER].
Otherwise, leave blank, and then press [ENTER].
6. Press [1] to enter the APN via the keypad (refer to
“Entering text via RAS” in the Challenger10 Administrators
Manual for details).
7. If required, press [1] to edit the APN user name.
Otherwise, leave blank, and then press [ENTER].
8. If required, press [1] to edit the APN password. Otherwise,
leave blank, and then press [ENTER].
After programming SIM1, similar fields display for SIM2.
Note: SIM2 programming is not supported in the current
release.
To set up a path:
1. From the Install menu, select 9-Communications and then
2-Setup Paths, to select the path number.
2. Enter 4 (or other communications path number), and then
press [ENTER].
3. The RAS displays the number of the path. If correct, press
[ENTER].
4. Press 1 [ENTER] to program the Path Main options.
To configure a path for one of the TS1053 module’s SIM cards,
the following Path Main menu options would need to be set:
Format. Select the required option.
Enable path. Change to Yes.
Path name. Assign a name, such as “SIM1 path”.
Path location. Select option 2 for expander 1 (or option 3
for expander 2, depending on whether the TS1053 module
is in expander port 1 or 2).
Path slot. Select option 4 for GSM SIM1.
Backup path number. Enter the number of the path that
this path backs up.
Note: If you need to change the format of a path that has been
previously programmed (or one of the default paths), first set
the format to “0-None” to clear the previous format’s
programming.

Checking the status via RAS
The TS1053 module’s status can be quickly displayed via RAS
to facilitate installation and troubleshooting.
To check the module’s status:
1. From the Install menu, select 9-Communications, and then
select 3-Status to open the Status menu.
2. Press [2] [ENTER] to open the HW Status menu.
3. From the Hardware Status menu press [ENTER] until you
see the expander port option that contains the TS1053
module. Press the number of the option, and then press
[ENTER].
4. The screen indicates whether a data connection has been
made. It should display “Radio State–SIM-1 Data
Connection”. Press [ENTER].
5. The screen indicates the signal strength with 0 to 5 hash
marks ‘#’. It should display something like “Signal Level is
####_”. The signal strength indicator relates to db levels
as shown in Table 1 on page 2.
6. Press [ENTER] to display the IP address to which the
module is connected (your carrier’s IP connection).
Firmware upgrade process
The module’s firmware can be upgraded via Titan 3.3 or later
(it is the easiest method of updating firmware). In Titan select
Firmware Upgrade from the Control menu. Refer to Titan help
for instructions.
Note: If the firmware was previously upgraded in Titan then
you can use Titan to check the module’s firmware version
(click Recall if it’s not displayed). Alternatively, check the
firmware version via RAS from Install menu option 11-Version
(device type 4-Exp) or via the Tecom Firmware Loader
application.
This section describes how to upgrade the module’s firmware
from a USB connection to a computer (not via Titan).
Note: During the upgrade process, the Challenger panel will
not be able to receive or report alarm signals. We recommend
that you follow the general instructions listed in the Challenger
Series Programming Manual, “Recommended routine
maintenance procedures”, in particular to notify the alarm
monitoring company and personnel on the premises (if
applicable).
Requirements
To upgrade the firmware you need the following:
A powered and functioning Challenger10 panel.
A Windows PC with a USB 2.0 port.
Tecom Firmware Loader application.
Access to the Challenger10 panel’s printed circuit board
(PCB).
A USB cable (Type A Male to Type B Mini Male” or “Type
A Male to Type B Micro Male”, depending on the
Challenger panel’s PCB version) to connect the computer
to the Challenger panel.
Firmware upgrade file.
Upgrading the firmware
Note: Refer to the Challenger Series Installation and Quick
Programming Manual for the locations of any items referred to
in this section.
To upgrade the module’s firmware:
1. Disconnect the panel’s power supply.
2. Fit test links 1 and 2 on the PCB.
3. Reconnect power to the panel. LED L1 will blink rapidly.
4. Use the USB cable to connect the computer to the
Challenger panel’s USB port at J18.
The first time you connect a Challenger panel to the
computer’s USB port, the Found New Hardware Wizard
may display. If the Found New Hardware Wizard does not
display, go directly to step 8.
5. If the wizard asks “Can Windows connect to Windows
Update to search for software?click to select the “No, not
this time” radio button, and then click Next.
6. If the wizard asks “What do you want the wizard to do?
click to select the “Install from a list or specific location”
radio button, and then click Next.
7. Click to select the “Search for the best driver in these
locations” radio button, and then browse to include the
location of the Tecom Firmware Loader application in the
search (for example, C:\Program Files\Tecom Firmware
Loader\inf_driver).
8. Run Tecom Firmware Loader (for example, double-click
the file C:\Program Files\Tecom Firmware Loader\tecom-
fw-loader_Vn.n.exe).
9. Click Select File… and then browse to the location of the
firmware upgrade file on your computer. Select the file and
then click Open.
10. Click to select the Exp 1 or Exp 2 radio button (as
appropriate).
11. Click Program File… to update the firmware. The process
will take several minutes. The percentage completion
displays at the bottom of the window. When finished, a
“Programming is complete” message displays.
12. Remove the USB cable from the Challenger panel.
13. Disconnect the panel’s power supply.
14. Remove test links 1 and 2.
15. Reconnect power to the panel.

Troubleshooting
Insufficient signal strength or no connection
The Challenger panel may be located where GSM data
connection isn’t possible when using the supplied antenna
(either at the panel or within reach of the antenna cable). You
may need to fit a high-gain antenna to achieve sufficient signal
strength (however, this is subject to network coverage).
Note: We advise installers to check for a GSM data connection
(3G in the current release) on the required network via a smart
phone (for example) to verify the presence of network
coverage at the desired location before fitting a TS1053
module.
Resetting the module
If the TS1053 module is not functioning correctly you may need
to reset (reinitialise) the module (retaining installer
programming) or reset both the module and restore the factory
programming.
For example, if the Challenger panel does not detect the
presence of a Micro SIM at SIM1 then the path goes into
failure mode. After the fault is corrected (for example, a Micro
SIM in installed in SIM1), then the module will need to be reset.
One way to perform a simple reset is to cycle the panel’s
power. This section describes resetting via RAS without cycling
power.
To reset the module:
1. From the Install menu, select 9-Communications and then
1-Setup H/W, to select the Setup menu.
2. From the Setup menu, press [ENTER] to see the locations
and their menu numbers. For example, if the module is in
Expander 2, the menu number is 3 (for “3-EXP2-TS1053”).
3. Press the menu number (2 for Expander 1 or 3 for
Expander 2), and then press [ENTER].
4. The board type should be set to 4-TS1053 3G Module. To
reset the module whilst retaining installer programming,
press [0] [ENTER] to set the board type to 0-None, and
then press [4] [ENTER] to toggle the board type back to
4-TS1053 3G Module. Press [ENTER] to exit the menu
and reset the module.
5. Alternatively, to reset the module and restore factory
programming, press [0] [ENTER] to set the board type to
0-None. Press [ENTER] to exit the menu.
Note: Whilst the board type is set to 0-None, the TS1053
module’s LEDs will not operate.
6. If set to 0-None, then you must set the board type back to
4-TS1053 3G Module, and then press [ENTER] to exit the
menu and reset the module.
