Handling and use
This section provides you with important information about
handling and using the appliance.
Before first use
Clean all accessories as described in the "Cleaning" section to
remove any possible production residues.
Read these operating instructions carefully.
Install the appliance in accordance with the safety instructions.
Open the safety catch by moving the slider from the position
to the position.
Clean the appliance with a damp cloth as described in "Cleaning
and Care."
Close the appliance.
Plug the cord into a properly connected outlet that delivers the
voltage designated in the chapter "Technical Data."
Allow the appliance to heat up for about 5 minutes on the maxi-
mum temperature setting by turning the heating level controller
as far as the right-hand stop.
The first time the appliance heats up, a small amount of smoke and odor
may be generated due to production-related residue. This is normal and
not dangerous at all. Ensure sufficient ventilation (by opening a window,
for example).
After heating, pull the plug out of the power socket and allow the
appliance to cool down completely.
Clean the appliance again with a damp cloth.
US-EN 11
SPM 1500 A1
Operation
Close the appliance lid using the handle .
Slide the grease catch tray into the appliance.
Insert the plug back into the power socket. The green indicator
light "Ready" lights up when the heating level controller is
set to "MIN" or lower.
Set the desired level on the heating level controller . The green
indicator light "Ready" goes out, and the red indicator light
"Power" lights up. As soon as the set heating level has been
reached, the red "Power" indicator light goes out and the
green "Ready" indicator light lights up again.
The green indicator light "Ready" lights up when the heating level
controller is set to "MIN" or lower. As soon as you set the heating
level controller to the desired position, the green indicator light "Ready"
goes out until the temperature is reached.
The green "Ready" indicator light may go out intermittently in the
meantime and the red "Power" indicator light lights up. This indicates
that the temperature has fallen below the set temperature and the appli-
ance is heating up again!
Open the lid and place the food to be toasted/grilled on the
lower hotplate .
Close the appliance lid using the handle . Since the upper hot
plate is movable, it will remain parallel with the lower hot plate
even when grilling thick items . This will ensure the best grilling
result.
Check the browning of the food after a while. To do this, open the
appliance lid using the handle .
12 US-EN SPM 1500 A1
Start with short grilling times and increase them until you identify the cor-
rect duration. When you are satisfied with the level of browning, remove the
grilled food.
Do not use sharp or pointed objects to remove
the grilled items. These could damage the surfaces of the hot-
plates !
Turn the heating levelcontroller all the way to the left, and
unplug the appliance.
Always unplug the appliance when it is not
being used. It’s not enough just to turn the heating level controller
2 all the way to the left!
Tips and tricks
To make meat more tender and speed up the grilling process,
you can marinate it beforehand. An ideal basis for this can be
sour cream, red wine, vinegar, buttermilk or fresh papaya or
pineapple juice, for example. Add herbs and spices according
to taste. Do not add salt as this can draw water out of the meat
and make it dry. Place the meat in the marinade so that it is
completely covered and close the container. Ideally, leave it
overnight.
The hotplates have a non-stick coating, therefore extra
grease is not necessary. If you still wish to use grease, please
ensure that the grease/oil is suitable for grill-roasting, e.g.
rapeseed oil.
If you are not sure whether the grilled food is cooked all the
way through, you can use a commercially available meat
thermometer.

SPM 1500 A1
Cleaning and care
Before cleaning the appliance, unplug it and
wait until it has cooled down completely. Risk of injury!
Never clean the appliance under running
water or submerge it in water. The appliance could be irreparably
damaged!
Make sure no dampness penetrates the appli-
ance in order to avoid irreparable damage.
Do not clean the surface by using scouring or
cleaning agents, or sharp or scratchy objects.
Draw the cleaning scraper over the hotplates after the
hotplates have cooled down so that the grease and resi-
dues are pushed together and can be more easily removed.
Clean the hot plates with a damp cloth. For stubborn
residue, use a mild detergent on the cloth. Do not use any
abrasive cleaning agents, rough sponges or sharp objects for
cleaning as these could damage the non-stick coating.
For stubborn crusting, lay a wet cloth on the baked-on residues
to soften them.
A damp cloth is sufficient for cleaning the exterior surfaces of
the appliance.
Ensure that all parts are completely dry before re-using the
appliance.
Wipe the cleaning scraper with a damp cloth. For stubborn
residue, use a mild detergent on the cloth.
