Cordless Kettle
Instructions and Guarantee
Read the instructions before using your Russell Hobbs Whisper Quiet™ Kettle and keep them in a safe
place for future reference. If you pass the kettle on to anyone else, pass on the instructions too.
Remove all packaging before using the kettle, but keep the packaging until you are satisfied that the kettle
is operating correctly. You may find a label on the outside of the product, listing its features.
This must be removed before usage.
IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS
Follow basic safety precautions, including:
1. To protect against electrical hazards do not immerse the mains lead, plug, power base, or kettle in water
or any other liquid. Do not use in bathroom or near any source of water. Do not use outdoors.
2. Don’t touch hot surfaces. Use the handle and lid knob.
3. Take care when pouring – pour slowly, and don’t over-tilt the kettle. Water can
remain hot for a considerable time after boiling and can present a scald hazard.
4. The scald hazard lasts long after boiling. Keep the kettle, stand, and cable away
from the edges of worktops and out of reach of children.
5. The appliance is not intended for use by young children or infirm persons unless
they have been adequately supervised by a responsible person to ensure that they
can use the appliance safely.
6. Young children should be supervised to ensure that they don’t play with the appliance.
7. Don’t fill past max, or it may spit boiling water.
8. Check if the kettle is properly located on the stand before switching on.
9. Use the kettle only with the stand supplied (and vice versa).
10. Check if the lid is fully closed before switching the kettle on, otherwise it may not switch off.
11. Don’t switch on unless the kettle contains at least 2 cups of water.
12. Don’t open the lid while the water is boiling.
13. Make sure the kettle is switched off before removing it from its stand & before filling or pouring.
14. Route the cable so it doesn’t overhang, and can’t be tripped over or caught.
15. Wind excess cable beneath the stand.
16. Unplug the stand when not in use, before moving and before cleaning. Let the kettle cool down before
cleaning and storing away.
17. The kettle must not be immersed in water for cleaning.
18. Keep the kettle, stand, cable, and plug away from sources of heat.
19. Don’t use the kettle for any purpose other than heating water.
20. This appliance must not be operated by an external timer or remote control system.
21. Don’t use the kettle if it’s damaged or malfunctions. If the cable is damaged, the kettle must be returned,
in order to avoid hazard. Contact Customer Service (see back page for details).
Household use only
Before use
Remove all packaging from the kettle and its power base. Before using the kettle for the first time, or if it
has been out of use for a long time, fill to the max mark and boil, then discard the boiled water and rinse the
kettle out with cold water.
HOW TO USE
Positioning
Position the power base as close to a wall socket as possible. Route the mains lead so that it does not
overhang the work surface, and cannot be caught accidentally. Shorten the mains lead by winding it round
the cord storage area under the power base, and bring it out of the cord exit cut into the base.
Filling
Warning: Keep clear, steam may escape from the lid if the kettle has just boiled. Remove the kettle from
the stand. If the switch has been pushed down inadvertently it will spring up to the “OFF” position. Grip the
handle in one hand, grip the lid knob in the other, and pull the lid off. Fill with at least 2 cups of water, but
not above max. If you overfill, the kettle may spit boiling water. Replace the lid, and press down to secure it.
Check the lid is closed, or the kettle won’t switch off when it boils.
2
Boiling
Plug the stand into the wall socket (switch the socket on). Press the boil switch down. The switch will light up
and the kettle will heat up. When it boils, the boil switch will pop up and the switch light will go out.
Switching off
To switch the kettle off manually, lift it off the stand. The boil switch will pop up. You can then replace the
kettle on the stand.
General
Remove the kettle from the stand before pouring. To avoid the risk of splashing, pour slowly and don’t
over-tilt the kettle. Don’t tilt the kettle backwards, water might get on to the control area. If this happens,
let the kettle dry before use – sit it somewhere warm for 12 hours. When you lift the kettle, you may see
moisture on the stand. Don’t worry – it’s the steam used to switch off automatically, which then condenses
and escapes via vents under the kettle. You may see some discolouration on the floor of the kettle. Again,
don’t worry – it’s due to the bonding of the element to the kettle floor.
Boiling dry
A boil-dry cut-out will switch the kettle off. To prevent the kettle cycling on and off, remove the kettle from
the stand and let it cool before replacing it on the stand. Sit the kettle on the work surface till it’s cold.
Repeated dry boil may shorten the life of the element.
Care and maintenance
Unplug the stand from the wall socket, and let the kettle cool down before cleaning. Wipe the kettle, inside
and out, with a damp cloth. You may use a little household detergent, but if you do, rinse well to avoid
tainting the water. You may notice the white diffuser attached to the floor of the kettle.
Do not try to remove it. Wipe the stand with a damp cloth. Keep all connectors and sockets dry.
Don’t put the kettle or stand in any liquid. Don’t use harsh or abrasive cleaning agents or solvents.
Whisper Quiet™ Boil-Tec
®
This technology consists of special designed and innovative features which include a diffuser and coating on
the base inside the kettle. While quietly buzzing the kettle will reach boiling point before you notice it!
SCALE
As you use the kettle, scale will also deposit on the quiet-boil coating, slowly decreasing the effect of noise
reduction. Regular descaling will keep your kettle clean and quiet. Do not try to move or remove the diffuser
attached to the floor of the kettle.
To minimise scale build-up:
Empty the kettle after use; do not allow water to stand in the kettle overnight; use filtered water instead of
ordinary tap water. Descale regularly – even in soft water areas.
Scale is mainly Calcium Carbonate (chalk), a harmless mineral found in most water supplies. Hard water
contains more than soft water. In some areas the scale may include minerals other than chalk. These may
colour the scale.
Limescale may be white, coloured, even rusty-looking, but it’s normally visible.
Phosphate scale isn’t generally visible, but it’s there, even in soft water areas. When water is heated, the
minerals solidify. This makes the water appear cloudy. It may form a film on the surface of the water or on the
walls and floor of the kettle. It may look like thin pieces of plastic in the water.
Scale deposits will form a hard crust which adversely affects the performance of your kettle and reduces its
life. All scale causes overheating and may prematurely trigger the boil-dry cut-out: switching it off before the
water has boiled.
Therefore it is important to descale regularly, even in a soft water area. Descale at least monthly, to help keep
your kettle in good working order. Use a descaler suitable for plastic products (all kettles have plastic parts).
Follow the instructions on the descaler.
3
Alternatively you may use white vinegar: Fill the kettle with half a litre of vinegar and leave it to stand for 1
hour without heating. Also citric acid can be used: boil half a litre of water, add 25g of citric acid and leave it
to stand for 15 minutes.
After descaling, rinse several times, fill, boil and discard the water, to remove all chemical residues.
Note: Products returned under guarantee with faults related to scale will be subject to a repair charge.
water filter
Scale particles suspended in the water may give it a cloudy or greasy appearance. The filter on your kettle
will prevent these particles going into your drink. If you see deposits on the filter, clean it, otherwise the
performance of your kettle will drop, your drinks may contain scale, and the water inside the kettle may
look cloudy.
cleaning the filter
Check your hands are free from soap, or anything which might leave a taint. Remove the kettle from the
stand. Remove the lid. Slide the filter up and out of the guides on either side of the spout. Rinse the filter
under a running tap while brushing with a soft brush. Rinse the kettle, in case scale particles have fallen
inside. Slide the filter down into the guides.
