• Should the LED illuminate permanently after turning on, the operating time of the
battery will be approx. 8 hours.
• Turn off the battery operation before replacing the battery.
• The battery can be removed easier by pressing the positive end slightly down with the
index finger.
• Warning: If the microphone is not being used for weeks or months, please remove
the battery. Batteries can leak when not being used for a long time and corrode the
conductor strips and components. Repair is not then possible. In this case all warranty
claims are null and void. The description “leak proof” on batteries is no guarantee that
they will not run out.
Maintenance
Use a soft, damp cloth for cleaning the microphone. If necessary, you can use a gentle
cleansing agent (such as washing-up liquid). Make sure not to allow any liquid to enter the
microphone and never use any solvent cleansers.
Service
Servicing must be carried out by qualified service personnel only. Dismantling the micro-
phone yourself will invalidate the guarantee.
Disposal
• If you throw away the microphone, please remove the battery.
• Old batteries may contain substances that are harmful to your health and environment.
• Dispose used batteries always according to the applicable disposal regulations. Please
do not throw used battery packs into the fire (danger of explosion) or your household
rubbish, take them to your local collection points. The return is free and required by
law. Please dispose discharged batteries only.
• For removing the battery, please refer to chapter “Battery powered MCE 85 BA”.
• All batteries are recycled to reclaim valuable material such as iron, zinc or nickel.
• This symbol on the product, in the instructions or on the packaging means
that your electrical and electronic equipment should be disposed at the end

using the product.
Safety instructions
• Protect the microphone from moisture and sudden impacts. You could either injure
yourself or others or damage the microphone.
• Do not blow into the microphone. In a condenser microphone this could damage the
transformer. It is preferable to carry out a speech trial.
• When using wired microphones always ensure that the microphone cable is laid so that
it does not present a trip hazard.
Application
The MCE 85 BA/MCE 85 PV can be mounted to film cameras, DSLR cameras or digital
camcorders for high-quality recordings in outdoor applications or in theatres and studios
with fishpole booms or as handhelds.
Descriptions
The microphone’s condenser element and lobe polar pattern provide high sensitivity
and excellent off-axis rejection. Due to its design and built-in filter, the microphone is
insensitive to wind and vibrations. The result is an accurate reproduction of any sound
source.
Due to its light weight it does not disturb camera handling. Its rugged design and the
non-glare mat black finish provide protection against the rigors of on-location production.
Low cut filter
The MCE 85 BA/MCE 85 PV is provided with a switchable low cut filter to eliminate
unwanted low frequencies caused by vibrations or wind noise at a cut-off frequency of
120 Hz (MCE 85 BA) or 160 Hz (MCE 85 PV). In order to avoid accidental switching the
switch has been mounted in a small cavity. Use a bent open paper-clip or something
similar to operate the switch.

Switch in position “ ” = low cut filter on
Connection and powering
The MCE 85 BA/MCE 85 PV is fitted with a 3-pin XLR connector (for pin assignment,
please refer to the “Technical Specifications”). The balanced output of the MCE 85 BA/
MCE 85 PV allows the interference-free use of long cables.
The MCE 85 BA/MCE 85 PV can be powered by any phantom power source supplying
11 to 52 V. If no phantom power source is available, we recommend using the MCE 85 BA
version, which can also be powered by a 1.5 V battery.
Battery powered MCE 85 BA
The MCE 85 BA microphone is fitted with a switch to activate the battery-powered
operation and a battery status LED. The typical life of a battery is around 160 hours.
• In order to insert the battery, turn the lower shaft of the microphone counter-clockwise
to open the battery compartment.
• Slide the sleeve of the battery compartment downwards and insert a 1.5 V battery, type
AA according to the polarity symbols.
• Slide the sleeve upwards to close the battery compartment and turn it clockwise.
• Switch in position “ ” = battery power on
Switch in position “ ” = battery power off
• If you use the MCE 85 BA microphone with phantom power, please turn the battery
power off to avoid unnecessary consumption of the battery.
