J3C MODULATING ACTUATOR WITH DPS PLUG & PLAY KIT OPTION
WHAT IS THE BSR (BATTERY‘SPRING RETURN’) FAILSAFE CONVERSION KIT?
The standard funcon of a J3C electric valve actuator is power open, power close. It stays put on external power failure.
Should the applicaon require that the electric actuator is sent to a pre-determined posion on loss of external power, the electric actuator
needs to be equipped with a system that can send the actuator to that pre-determined posion without the use of external power. In the
J3C, the BSR funcon conversion plug and play kit provides this funconality by providing an alternate power source (baery) to drive the
motor to the required posion. This funcon this creates what is known as FAILSAFE.
The inials BSR stand for Baery ‘Spring Return’ and use the industry recognisable phrase ‘spring return’ simply to describe the funcon it
achieves - but there are no mechanical springs in the kit. Providing an alternate power supply (a) allows the same torque output actuator
that is used for an on-o actuator in this applicaon, as the actuator does not have to overcome the extra torque the springs add in a true
mechanical spring return electric actuator, and (b) allows the installaon of a plug and play funcon conversion kit that does not require a
change to the actuator’s external electrical connecon.
The user friendly BSR failsafe plug and play funcon conversion kit is quick and easy to install, and can be congured on installaon to send
the J3C electric actuator to either the closed posion (fail closed), or the open posion (fail open) on loss of external power.
HOW THE BSR SYSTEM WORKS
The BSR plug and play FAILSAFE funcon conversion kit comprises 2 x NiCad industrial rechargeable baery packs, a PCB which in simplisc
terms contains a system to trickle charge the baeries, to switch from external to baery power on the loss of external power and to iniate
LED ashing sequences, and a jumper to plug into the PCB.
Once installed, the baeries are constantly trickle charged whenever external power is applied, maintaining them at full charge so that pow-
er is available to draw at the moment the external power fails. When the external power fails, the BSR PCB switches from external to internal
power, and baery power is drawn to send the actuator to the pre-determined failsafe posion, if not already in that posion at the moment
of loss of external power.
On resumpon of external power, the J3C failsafe electric actuator will respect the command signal being applied at the moment the exter-
nal power is restored. This may be dierent from the posion seen at the moment of loss of external power.

J3C-140/300 BSR SAFETY & WARRANTY INSTRUCTIONS
Damage caused by non-compliance to these instrucons will not be covered by our warranty. It is essenal therefore that you read
all of these instrucons BEFORE installing or connecng the actuator.
SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
J+J Electric actuators operate with the use of live electricity. It is recommended that only qualied electricians or people instructed
in accordance with electrical engineering, and familiar with local health and safety direcves, be involved in the connecon of
these actuators. It is strongly recommended that each actuator has its own independent fused power supply system to protect it
against the inuence of other electrical devices connected to the system.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
> Every J3C electric actuator is fully tested and set at the factory, they will not normally require adjustment on site.
>The J+J electric actuator range is guaranteed for 12 months from date of despatch from the manufacturer against all types of
manufacturing and material defects. Actuators that have failed due to faulty materials will be replaced without charge. The guar-
antee is limited to the replacement of the actuator only, as decided by our service department and no third party costs (e.g. la-
bour costs for removal/ replacement, producon down me, etc.) howsoever arising, will be entertained. Transport costs in-
volved in the return and replacement are chargeable.
> The guarantee is only valid if the actuator has been installed, operated and maintained strictly in accordance with these instruc-
ons, and that the actuator has NOT been disassembled, self-repaired, incorrectly re-assembled, suered damage caused by
shocks or mal-operaon, been supplied with inappropriate power supplies, used in condions outside its specicaons or work-
ing condions, or suered damage by pracces not in accordance with sound engineering pracce or common sense.

from the plasc bag in the DPS kit, into the actuator’s alumini-
um plate as shown in Photograph 6.
Step 2
Slide the DPS circuit board over the black plasc sha, ensur-
ing the spigot in the feedback gear aligns with the corre-
sponding slot in the plasc sha.
Ensure the plug and socket connecon between the main PCB
and the DPS PCB is rmly made.
Step 3
Secure the DPS PCB with the securing screw from the plasc
bag in the DPS kit into the brass hexagonal support column as
shown in Photograph 8.
Note:
These instrucons show a BSR failsafe system installed prior
to installing the DPS modulang system. This will create fail-
safe modulang funcon.
The instrucons for installing only the DPS kit are the same.

Replace the original cover with 2 Din plugs with the 3 Din plug cover supplied in
the DPS kit. Reconnect the power, end of travel conrmaon switches and earth
push-in plugs.
Connect the control signal plug to the appropriate connecon on the DPS circuit
board, selecng either 4-20mA or 0-10V control.
For reverse acng applicaons where the control input signal response reverses
(eg: 4mA = open and 20mA = closed), and fails to open posion on loss of control
signal), move jumper on DPS PCB to N.O., as indicated in the yellow circle in Pho-
tograph 9.
For standard acng (4mA = closed, 20mA = open) leave the jumper in the N.C.

WIRING DIAGRAMS
We recommend a fused independent supply for each actuator and it is very important that the power supply earth connecon is made to prevent
the current-free voltage on the non-live pin prevenng the actuator working. This current-free voltage disappears as soon as the motor runs, but
in non-earthed systems it can stop the J3C from working.
The posion conrmaon switches are volt free and can have a dierent voltage applied than the power supply voltage e.g. 220V/1ph power
supply, 24VDC for posion conrmaon. For ease, the schemac below shows the same voltage for both power and posion conrmaon. See
notes at the boom of this page regarding use of the volt fee contacts (end of travel conrmaon).
Funcon opons with the J3C electric actuator:
J3C ON-OFF ELECTRIC ACTUATOR
Standard funcon is power open, power close. Stays put on
loss of external power. Power remains on at all mes.
J3C FAILSAFE ELECTRIC ACTUATOR
Fails to pre-set posion on loss of external power.
Power open, power close, fails to pre-set ‘safe’ posion on
loss of external power using internal industrial trickle charged
rechargeable NiCad baery. Can be set to fail close or fail
open on loss of external power. The failsafe electric actuator
moves to the posion command applied at the me external
power is restored.
J3C MODULATING ELECTRIC ACTUATOR
Movement proporonal to input signal
Power is applied connuously. Movement of valve
actuator is then controlled by an internally ed
digital posioner and is proporonal to changes
supplied in an input control signal. This input
signal is typically 0-10VDC, or 4-20mA. An output
signal is supplied as standard providing closed
loop control. Fails closed on loss of control signal
(or see conguraon opons below), stays put on
loss of external power.
Conguraon opons:
1) Closes on loss of control signal
2) Opens on loss of control signal
3) Stays put on loss of control signal
IMPORTANT NOTES
EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY/ COMMAND SIGNALS, AND POWER SUPPLY SIZING
The J3C electric actuator is designed to have connuous (not pulsed) external power applied at all mes. It’s internal thermostac an-condensaon
heater uses the external power to funcon, so switching o the power at end of travel switches this protecon o. Damage caused by the eects of
condensaon is not covered by our warranty as we provide protecon against it as standard. It is imperave that the power supply has sucient
capacity to drive the J3C electric actuator. Ensure that safety factor of 3 is used to cover inrush on start-up, and for increased draw over me as the
brushed DC motor wears.
Another issue with using the end of travel conrmaon signals to switch o the command signals is that as they are set around 5 degrees ahead of
the nal motor stop posion (fully open, or fully closed), if used to switch o the power, the valve will not reach the nal motor stop posions.
J3C FAILSAFE MODULATING ACTUATOR
Combinaon of failsafe & modulang kits above: Uses baery failsafe system and digital posioner plug and play funcon conversion kits to provide fail to
safe posion funcon on loss of external power in a modulang applicaon.

MOUNTING THE J3C ACTUATOR TO 1/4 TURN VALVES
J3C Actuators have mounng facilies in accordance with ISO:5211 and DIN:3337 allowing them, in many cases, to mount directly onto similarly compliant
valves without the need for a mounng kit (bracket and drive adaptor/ connector). The main advantages of direct mounng the actuators is to greatly assist in
ensuring concentricity of the actuator output drive with the valve stem which eliminates side loadings (which result in increased wear on the valve stem and
seals), reducing the eects of backlash in the drive train as there are fewer parts connected, and allowing valves to be part dismantled for installaon into the
pipe without disturbing the valve to actuator connecon.
The drive being inserted into the actuator’s female output drive must NOT be longer than the maximum depth of the female drive when the
assembly is bolted together. Resulng damage to the actuator and assembled components due to this assembly error will not be covered by our
warranty.

WEATHERPROOF RATING
The J3C electric actuators have an ingress protecon rang of IP67, which gives them total protecon against
almost all kinds of weather and allows the actuator to be submerged under less than 1m of water for no more
than 30 minutes. However, it cannot withstand being hosed down or pressure washed, or deluged in water.
If the J3C is to be exposed to hosing down or pressure washing, a plasc bag must be rst put over the J3C
actuator to protect it from the direct hosing down. Even in these circumstances, do not pressure wash the
plasc bag close up.
Damage caused by water ingress is therefore not normally covered by the warranty.
