Conference Systems, Inc., the largest national distributor of
simultaneous interpretation systems, is proud to present the
PLS500 series. PLS500 is the world’s first portable, wireless language
system that has been specifically designed for simultaneous
interpretation applications. In the past, products designed for similar
audio applications have been adapted into the language
interpretation market and users have had to work around their
limitations. The PLS 500 series has been designed by interpretation
industry people for use by professional interpreters.
With over 25 years of experience in the language interpretation
industry, CSI has developed a keen understanding of what is required to provide effective
communication in multiple languages.
Although the PLS500 Portable Language System utilizes cutting-edge wireless technology for the
highest quality audio transmission, it has been specifically designed for ease of use to be operated by
non-technical personnel. The “user-friendly” design will allow interpreters to concentrate on their
performance and not worry about operation of the equipment.

PT-500 Portable Transmitter, Charging
Charging Batteries
1. The PT-500 is unique because it has an
automatic battery charger built-in. That
means that when the unit is connected to
a wall transformer or placed in a battery
recharging case, NiMH batteries will be
charged within the PT-500. Once batteries
are charged the internal battery charger will
automatically turn off. This prevents
overcharging of batteries, automates the
process of charging, and makes it so you
don’t have to remember to unplug the
charger.
2. Do not attempt to charge alkaline or any
other type of non-NiMH batteries. Only charge
Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries within
the PT-500. We recommend that you use NiMH
batteries supplied by CSI.
3. IMPORTANT: To charge NiMH batteries, the
BATTERY SELECT switch must be
selected to NiMH. Use a
pen or small screwdriver
to move the switch
(located in the battery
compartment directly
below the BATTERY SELECT
label) to the proper
position.
4. Install NiMH rechargeable batteries in the
battery conpartment, ensuring that proper
polarity has been observed.
NOTE: It is recommended that you only use a CSI
supplied charging transformer. Or, set the
PT-500 with NiMH batteries within the unit in a
CSI Carrying / Charging Case.
Charging Using a Drop-In Charger
To charge the batteries using a drop-in charger,
place the unit into a slot in the charger and
connect the charger to power. Make sure the
unit is fully seated in its slot. Units can be on or off
while charging.
SmartCharge™ uses a pulse charging, which
greatly extends the life of Nickel Metal Hydride
(NiMH) batteries. The entire charging process
takes about 13 hours. CSI recommends that you
allow the charger to complete its full cycle every
time for maximum battery life.
During the charge cycle, the red LED on top of
the CSI product will flash slowly. When charging is
completed, the LED will turn off It is not necessary
to unplug the charger; however, if you unplug the
unit from the charger and then plug it back in, it
will begin the 13-hour charge cycle over again.
When not using the PT-500, it is recommended to
leave the unit on the charger. The charger
provides a “maintenance” charge that keeps
the battery at 100%. If the unit is not on the
charger, the battery will lose up to 20% of its
charge per month.
NOTE: Contact CSI (see page 4) for charging and
carrying case options.
WARNING: Do not place the BATTERY switch in the
NiMH position if you are not using Nickel Metal Hydride
Batteries. The NiMH position will attempt to charge any
batteries in the unit, even if they are not the proper type.
Charging non-Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries will
result in physical harm, destruction of property and/or fire.

on the LCD.
2.
Once the batteries are fully charged, the unit
will stop charging the batteries. Full-charge will
be indicated when all battery segments on the
LCD are illuminated and the LED near the
volume control is off.
3. The unit can be operated while batteries are
charging.
Operating the PT-500 with a Wall Transformer
1. The unit will operate normally when connected
to a wall transformer.
2. Batteries do not need to be installed in the unit
to operate using a wall transformer.

PT-500 Troubleshooting
There is no audio
Make sure the MUTE/TALK switch is in the TALK
position. Make sure you have the microphone
plugged all the way in to the input jack. When
using the line input adapter make sure you
have connected a line level, unbalanced
input at the “ring” of the connector.
The audio is distorted
Make sure you are using an approved
microphone. Try using a different mic
sensitivity switch setting (the switch is located
inside the battery compartment of the unit).
If you are using a line level input, turn down
the level of the input. If you are using any
equipment that does not have SQ capability,
turn off SQ in the PT-500 and any receivers
utilized on this system.
There is hum in the audio
The microphone may be too close to a
transformer. Try moving around and see if the
hum goes away.
The microphone level is low
The microphone must be in close proximity
to the person who is speaking. If this does not
work, try using a head-worn microphone. The
mic sensitivity switch may be on the wrong
setting, see page 6. Try a different setting (the
switch is located inside the battery
compartment). Some microphones have
directional pickups, ensure that the
microphone in use is oriented and positioned
properly (pointing at the speakers mouth).
The audio doesn’t have much fidelity
If your receivers all have SQ capability,
activate SQ in all units by moving their
switches to the ON position. In the PT-500 and
all SQ-equipped receivers, the SQ switch is
located inside the battery compartment.
See page 6 for more information.
There is too much noise
This is most likely because the microphone is
not close enough to the talker’s mouth, and it
is picking up background noise.
Try positioning the microphone closer or try
using a microphone that is directional (such
as a head-worn mic). Try another setting on
the mic sensitivity switch (located inside the
battery compartment). Ensure the microphone
is not brushing up against anything.
There is interference
Try different frequencies until you find a clear
channel.
I cannot pick up the signal on the receiver
Make sure the transmitter and the receiver are
on the same channel.
I can pick up the signal on the receiver, but it
sounds like it’s not tuned in
Check to make sure the transmitter and
receiver are on exactly the same channel
number / letter.
The audio will not mute
If you are using the line input through the ring
of the input jack, this audio will not be muted
when the mute switch is engaged. Only the
mic input (tip of the input jack) will be muted.

PT-500 Troubleshooting, continued
There is not sufficient range
The PT-500 is a portable transmitter that uses
the microphone cable as an antenna and
the range will vary depending on the location
of the receivers compared to the transmitter.
You can expect about 100 feet of average
effective working range.
My batteries are not charging
Make sure you are using NiMH batteries and
that the BATTERY SELECT switch (inside the
battery compartment) is set to the NiMH
position. Make sure the batteries are installed
correctly. Make sure you are using the right
kind of wall transformer or charging case.
Make sure the charging case is connected to
power and the unit is securely pushed into its
slot in the case.
NOTE: CSI uses 2100mAh (milli-Amp-hour)
constant current NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride)
batteries.

Make sure the unit is on by rotating the volume
knob to ON when an earpiece or headset is
plugged into the unit. PR-500 receivers use the
cable of the earphone or headset as receiving
antenna.
CAUTION:
Don’t blow out your
ears! Slightly rotate the volume
knob to turn the unit ON while
keeping the volume turned
down. Then, adjust volume after
listening to earphone.
Select a channel to receive the incoming
audio by pressing the channel UP and DOWN
buttons. Note that the transmitters are preset to
channels 1 and 5 so begin by selecting on of
these two channels.
Test the Audio: With on person operating the
PT-500 transmitter and one person operating
the PR-500 receiver on the same channel, you
should now be able to test the audio.
Find Audio Transmission:
Another way to select
a channel is to press the SEEK
button. When you do this, the
PR-500 receiver looks for the
next channel that is active.
Sometimes that unit will mistake
interference for a real
broadcast signal. If you get
interference, press the SEEK
button again. Continue to press
SEEK until you reach the
clearest operating channel.
Adjust volume control for the best listening level.
Locking On Channels
For applications where users want to select and
lock on to one specific channel follow the
directions below.

PR-500 Portable Receiver, Squelch Programming
Squelch
The purpose of squelch is to mute the audio
output of your receiver when the signal from
the transmitter is turned off or is too weak to be
received. Without squelch you would hear radio
noise in your earphone. The squelch on your
receiver can be adjusted so that it will mute the
audio on different RF signal strengths. This is useful
as follows:
Squelch setting: To ensure that users don’t hear
transmissions from other transmitters, set the
squelch setting to the highest level that doesn’t
squelch the receiver.
Adjusting squelch: If the receiver is going to be
close to the transmitter (i.e. in a classroom), setting
the squelch setting high so that when the
transmitter is turned off it immediately squelches
and ignores transmitters in other rooms.
• If you are in an area that has a lot of
interference, you may want to set the squelch
setting to a high setting to ensure the
interference is not picked by the receiver.
If you need the maximum amount of range, you
may want to consider setting the squelch
setting to a low level (0, 1 or 2). CAUTION: when
setting the squelch level low the reliability of
squelch function is comprised. This will cause
radio noise to be heard in the earphone and
there is a possibility of hearing damage.
Squelch Programming
Enter Squelch Program Mode
• Turn the unit off
• Press and hold the seek button; while still
holding seek turn the ON/OFF dial to turn the
unit on.
• Release the seek button when the Listen name
disappears and a two digit display is seen.
Squelch Adjustment
• Use the Channel UP and DOWN buttons to raise
or lower the squelch sensitivity settings.
• Lower numbers mean that a less powerful and
possibly noisy signal will be heard, but you can
have a longer range.
• Higher numbers mean that a more powerful
signal with no noise will be heard, but you may
have a shorter range.
• Squelch setting 00 is no squelch; this effectively
disables Squelching capabilities of the receiver.
Squelch setting 20 is maximum squelch
sensitivity; you must have a very strong and
stable RF signal for the unit to not engage the
squelch feature.
• Adjusting the squelch setting will keep your
PR-500 receiver from picking up noise when the
transmitter is not transmitting, or when you lose
the signal by being out of range or if
encountering interference.
NOTE: For squelch settings 1-
3, the squelch
function is slow which allows for maximum
transmission range. For squelch settings 4-20 the
squelch function is fast to ensure little radio noise is
heard during the squelch function.

PR-500 Portable Receiver, Charging, Drop-In Charging
Charging Batteries
1. The PT-500 is unique because it has an
automatic battery charger built-in. That means
that when the unit is connected to a wall
transformer or placed in a battery recharging
case, NiMH batteries will be charged within the
PT-500. Once batteries are charged the internal
battery charger will automatically turn off. This
prevents overcharging of batteries, automates
the process of charging, and makes it so you
don’t have to remember to unplug the
charger.
2. Do not attempt to charge alkaline or any other
type of non-NiMH batteries. Only charge Nickel
Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries within the
PT-500. We recommend that you use NiMH
batteries supplied by CSI.
3. IMPORTANT: To charge NiMH
batteries, the BATTERY
SELECT switch must be
selected to NiMH. Use a
pen or small screw
driver to move the switch
(located in the battery
compartment directly below
the BATTERY SELECT label) to
the proper position.
4. Install NiMH rechargeable batteries in the
battery compartment, ensuring that proper
polarity has been observed.
NOTE: It is recommended that you only use a CSI
supplied charging transformer. Or, set the PT-500
with NiMH batteries within the unit and powered
ON in a CSI Carrying/Charging Case.
Charging Using a Drop-In Charger
To charge the batteries using a drop-in charger,
place the unit into a slot in the charger and
connect the charger to power. Make sure the
unit is fully seated in its slot. Units can be on or off
while charging.
SmartCharge™ uses a pulse charging, which
greatly extends the life of Nickel Metal Hydride
(NiMH) batteries. The entire charging process
takes
about 13 hours. CSI recommends that you
allow the charger to complete its full cycle every
time for maximum battery life.
During the charge cycle, the red LED on top of
the CSI product will flash slowly. When charging is
completed, the LED will turn off. It is not necessary
to unplug the charger; however, if you unplug the
unit from the charger and then plug it back in, it
will
begin the 13-hour charge cycle over again.
When not using the PR-500, it is recommended to
leave the unit on the charger. The charger
provides a “maintenance” charge that keeps the
battery at 100%. If the unit is not on the charger,
the battery will lose up to 20% of its charge per
month.
NOTE: Contact CSI (see page 4) for charging and
carrying case options.
WARNING: Do not place the BATTERY switch in the NiMH
position if you are not using Nickel Metal Hydride Batteries.
The NiMH position will attempt to charge any batteries in
the unit, even if they are not the proper type.
Charging non-Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries will
result in physical harm, destruction of property and/or fire.
