UPS Installation Procedure for APC Smart-UPS
(Uninterruptible Power Supply)
on AGILENT 3070 Testhead Controllers & Workstations
with B.03.xx & Agilent-ux 10.2
By Tim Tompkins, MTBU Product Support
Many AGILENT 3070 family customers are concerned about file system corruption
when their AGILENT 9000/700 AGILENT-UX test head controllers/test development
stations are improperly shut down due to power line disturbances. This
article covers the installation and configuration of an APC Smart-UPS and
APC PowerChute plus software to help avoid problems related to power line
disturbances.
APC (American Power Conversion) is the leading supplier of UPS equipment
for the PC and workstation market. This company was chosen due to its
market leadership and worldwide availability of its products.
The UPS and software are available from:

One, APC, model# SU700NET, Uninterruptable Power Supply. This 700 VA UPS
will power a testhead controller for aprox 10 minutes. You need one
UPS per 9000/700 computer.
One, APC, model# AP9005, PowerChute plus v4.2.3 for AGILENT-UX. This software
provides communication between the UPS and AGILENT-UX to gracefully shutdown
the operating system when the primary AC power fails. You need one
software license per 9000/700 computer.
One, APC, p/n# 940-0024C, DB-9 serial cable (included with UPS)
ADDITIONAL HARDWARE
One available RS-232 port on the testhead controller/test development
station. It is recommended that you use one of ports 4-8 on the
E3788A SCSI to RS-232 converter.
One, "Ether twist" LAN cable, (RJ-45 to RJ-45) Use as short a cable as
possible, preferably less than 1m. If this can't be obtained at a local
'computer store' use AGILENT p/n 8120-6773.
NOTE: AGILENT has discontinued its line of PowerWise UPS
products. ALL support for these products is handled by American
Power Conversion. Customers who have a PowerWise UPS should
contact APC for help with installation and configuration in a

APC specifies that the DB-9 serial cable (p/n 940-0024C) MUST be used.
The Black Box FA066 adapter connects the APC cable to a RJ-45 cable to
plug into the E3788A SCSI to RS-232 mux.

SU700NET <<< 940-0024C >>> FA066 <<< 8120-6773 >>> E3788A
Setting up the hardware.
1. Shutdown the AGILENT Series 9000/700 computer and peripherals
2. Connect power for the computer, monitor and E3788 into the UPS.
3. Connect the RJ-45 cable to an available port on the E3788A.
(See the E3788A installation manual, Agilent p/n E3788-9000 for device
file information. I used port 4, device file = /dev/ttyds04, this is
the first undesignated serial port available)
4. Connect the other end of the RJ-45 cable into the Black Box
adapter, the APC serial cable into the Black Box adapter and the
connector on the back of the UPS.
5. The 9000/700 and another computer (PC) with a CD-ROM drive must
both be on a local area network.
Setting up the software.
1. Turn on the UPS
2. Turn on the AGILENT9000/700 computer and all peripherals.
3. Allow sufficient time for the AGILENT9000/700 to complete its boot.
The PowerChute plus software is available on CD-ROM and 3.5" floppy
disk. It must be copied from the install media to your 9000/700.
1. Copy the directory Agilent10 from the install media to an empty directory
on your PC. (for example /apc)
2. From the PC connect to your 9000/700 using FTP and login as 'root'. Copy
in binary mode the directory containing the PowerChute software to an
empty directory on your 9000/700. (for example /apc) This should take
less than 60 seconds.
3. Logon your 9000/700 as 'root'.
4. Change directories to where the software was copied: 'cd /apc'.
5. Change the permissions on the files you just copied: 'chmod 500 ./*'
6. Install the software: ./install
The installation script will prompt you through a series of questions.
Enter the following responses,
Select the media type from which you will install: [?] 1 (CD-ROM/directory)
Enter path to mounted CD ROM [/apc] (where the software was copied)
Would you like to see an overview of the Installation? [y/n,q] n
Which Parts of PowerChute Plus for Unix do you wish to install? [?] 3
(both)
Which APC Hardware will PowerChute Plus for Unix be running with [?] 2
(Smart UPS)
Do you currently have a Measure-UPS attached to the UPS? [y/n,q] n
On which Operating System are you installing? [?] 5 (Agilent-ux)
Do you currently have TCP/IP Installed? [y/n,q] y
Which color scheme do you wish to use [1]? (default)
Which serial device will be dedicated to PowerChute Plus for Unix [?] 3
(other)
Enter full path name of a serial device: /dev/ttyds04 (my example)
Where do you wish to install PowerChute Plus for Unix?: /usr/lib/powerchute
(this is the default)
Are the above selections correct? [y/n,q] y
The software will complete its installation, check communication to the UPS
and display a message that the computer must be rebooted to put the
installation into effect.
Reboot the computer and test to be sure that everything is working
correctly, this can be done by disconnecting primary power from the UPS
The default shutdown delay when a power failure is detected is 5 min. If
power is restored before the delay time period the shutdown will not occur.
The user interface software (/usr/lib/powerchute/xpowerchute) requires that
a user account 'pwrchute' exist. Create this new user with SAM.
You can monitor and test the UPS with the interface software, the daemon
which handles the power failure sensing and shutdown runs automatically and
does NOT require the interface program to operate correctly.
