WEEE
The information below is issued in compliance with the regulations as set out in the 2002/96/EC
directive, subsequently superseded by 2003/108/EC. It refers to electrical and electronic equipment
and the waste management of such products.
When disposing of a device, including all of its components, subassemblies, and materials that are an
integral part of the product, you should consider the WEEE directive.
The symbol to the right has been attached to the equipment or, if this has not been
possible, on the packaging, instruction literature, and/or the guarantee sheet. By using
this symbol, it states that the device has been marketed after August 13, 2005 and implies
that you must separate all of its components when possible and dispose of them in
accordance with local waste disposal legislations.
Because of the substances present in the equipment, improper use or disposal of the refuse can
cause damage to human health and to the environment.
With reference to WEEE, it is compulsory not to dispose of the equipment with normal urban refuse
and arrangements should be instigated for separate collection and disposal.
Contact your local waste collection body for more detailed recycling information.
In case of illicit disposal, sanctions will be levied on transgressors.
RoHS
This device, including all it components, subassemblies and the consumable materials that are an
integral part of the product, has been manufactured in compliance with the European directive
2002/95/EC known as the RoHS directive (Restrictions on the use of certain Hazardous Substances).
This directive targets the reduction of certain hazardous substances previously used in electrical and
electronic equipment (EEE).

Hardware Specification
Display Interface
The LVDS expansion board provides two display interfaces. Header J8, page 15 and connector J9,
page 16 provide the signals to drive an LVDS display and backlight. In addition to these signals,
header J8 includes signals to support a resistive touch panel, while connector J9 includes an EIA-232
serial port. The following sections describe these capabilities.
For further details about the LVDS display and backlight capabilities, refer to the Catalyst Module
Design-In Guide (Eurotech document #110122-2003).
LVDS Display
The LVDS expansion board accepts the LVDS display signals from the Catalyst Module, buffers the
signals, and provides them on header J8, page 15 and connector J9, page 16. These signals consist
of four LVDS data pairs, as well as an LVDS pixel clock. A standard LVDS expansion board supports
18-bit (6-bit RGB), with 24-bit (8-bit RGB) color available as a volume production option. Additional
features include software-controlled display power and display scan control. For electrical
specifications, see LVDS Display, page. 17.
The LVDS buffer/repeater on the board includes configurable pre-emphasis to drive long cables. A
standard LVDS expansion board is configured for pre-emphasis off. Other configurations are available
as volume production options. To reduce power consumption, this buffer/repeater includes a software-
controlled input allowing the device to power down when the display is not in use.
Backlight
Most LCDs include one or more cold-cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) tubes to backlight the display.
Backlight inverters drive the panel backlights. These circuits are typically external to the display and
generate the several hundred volts required to drive the CCFL tubes. Backlights can easily become
the greatest source of power consumption in a portable system. Applications can dim or turn off the
backlighting to reduce power consumption.
The LVDS expansion board supplies software-controlled backlight power and three backlight control
signals on header J8, page 15 and connector J9, page 16. These control signals originate on the
Catalyst Module and are buffered on the LVDS expansion board. For electrical specifications, see
Backlight, page 18. The following table describes the backlight control signals.

Touch Panel Controller or UART
The LVDS expansion board supports either a resistive touch panel or an EIA-232 serial port. Four on-
board resistors select the routing of the USB host port from the Catalyst FX carrier board to a USB
touch panel controller or USB UART. A standard LVDS expansion board is configured for a touch
panel controller, as given in the following table.

Audio Interface
For its audio interface, the LVDS expansion board uses an Intel
®
High Definition Audio (Intel HD
Audio) compatible codec providing high quality audio in an embedded environment. The following
sections describe the audio inputs and outputs provided by this codec. For electrical specifications,
see Audio Interface, page 18.
Audio Inputs: Stereo Line In and Microphone
The LVDS expansion board supports a stereo line in on RCA jacks J3, page 14 and J4, page 14 and a
microphone on RCA jack J2, page 14.
Audio Outputs: Stereo Line Out and S/PDIF
The LVDS expansion board drives a stereo line out on RCA jacks J5, page 14 and J7, page 15. In
addition, the codec provides a Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format (S/PDIF) output on header J6,
page 14 for connectivity to consumer electronic equipment.
