INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
Thoroughly Clean and Dry the Glass
The following steps describe installation using the
windshield-mounting bracket. This is the most common
installation method and applies to most sedans and light
vehicles with sloped windshields and standard rear view
mirrors.
Unless the vehicle manufacturer or legal restrictions
require otherwise, Lytx’s recommended location on the
windshield is a position directly behind the rearview mirror on the passenger side of the vehicle.
Before selecting the proper locations, always consult the vehicle manufacturer’s
recommendations and any applicable federal, state, provincial and local laws that prohibit
mounting devices on a vehicle’s windshield or other locations in a vehicle.
Select a location on the windshield behind the rear view mirror on the passenger side
of the vehicle, subject to any vehicle manufacturer’s guidelines, or any applicable
federal, state, provincial or local laws that prohibit mounting devices on a vehicle’s
windshield or other locations in a vehicle.
Using the alcohol wipe provided, thoroughly clean the mounting area.
Using a clean, dry cloth, thoroughly dry the mounting area.
Carefully Select a Mounting Location
The event recorder needs to be mounted in a location that provides an unobstructed view of the interior
and exterior (front) of the vehicle.
The interior-facing lens should capture a view from the outside shoulder of the driver to the outside
shoulder of a front seat passenger.
The exterior-facing lens should capture a clear view of everything in front of the vehicle, beginning as
close to the front of the vehicle as possible without cutting off the horizon.
CAUTION: This step is critical to prevent the
bracket from falling off later.
CAUTION: An improperly positioned event
recorder can reduce the effectiveness of the program.
© 2016 Lytx, Inc. Confidential & Proprietary 12
Loosen the Torx screws so the event recorder can rotate in the bracket.
Temporarily position the assembly on the windshield using the images and guidelines below to
determine the best location.
Windshield Mounting Options (Restrictions & Recommendations)
The figures below provide Lytx’s recommendations for mounting the WU on the vehicle
windshield that work within the guidelines set forth by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Administration (FMCSA). Lytx’s “Two-Inch Allowance” is within the federal guidelines for video
event recorders. However, some states have adopted laws that restrict locations where objects
can be attached to the vehicle windshield. Always refer to any applicable federal, state, provincial
and local laws that prohibit mounting devices on vehicle’s windshield or other locations in a
vehicle.
The following recommendations apply to most commercial vehicles, but always check federal,
state, provincial and local laws that prohibit mounting devices on a vehicles windshield or other
locations in a vehicle.
Determine the Circular Wiper Path
© 2016 Lytx, Inc. Confidential & Proprietary 13
Determine the Vertical Wiper Path
FMCSA Allowance: Allows the event recorder to be mounted within (but not lower than) 100 mm
(four inches) of the upper edge of the area swept by the windshield wipers or within (but not
above) 175 mm (7 inches) of the lower edge of the area swept by the windshield wipers, provided
that the event recorder is located outside the driver’s sight lines to the road and highway signs
and signals.
Larger commercial motor vehicles: Mount the event recorder near the center of the windshield
on the passenger’s side, with the bottom of the bracket placed in the “allowed” locations as
described above. The road facing camera must have a view through the wiper path to operate
properly.
Mark the Mounting Location on the Glass
CAUTION: Do not peel the backing from the
adhesive strips until the next step.
IMPORTANT: Make sure traced
guide marks are level
© 2016 Lytx, Inc. Confidential & Proprietary 14
Step 1:
Hold the assembly in place and trace the outline of the bracket on the
windshield with a marker. Note that the wider portion of the bracket is
towards the ground.
Step 2:
Remove the event recorder from the mounting bracket.
Step 3:
Check the fit of the bracket against the windshield. If windshield is curved,
gently bend the bracket so it will lie flush against the glass.
Step 4:
Final Location Check: Before attaching the bracket, take a moment to verify
that you have selected a good mounting location and that the outward facing
view is through the wiper arc.
Step 5:
Hold the assembly in place and sit in the driver’s seat. Make sure the event
recorder does not block the driver’s view of the road.
Step 6:
Rotate mirrors, sun visors, wipers, and other objects near the event recorder
to make sure they cannot block either lens, but only to the extent functionality
of those objects is not compromised if used for vehicle safety.
© 2016 Lytx, Inc. Confidential & Proprietary 15
Attach the Bracket to the Windshield
Step 1:
Make sure the glass is clean and dry and the air temperature is at least 50F
(10C).
Step 2:
Remove the backing from the adhesive side of the bracket.
Step 3:
Make sure the large plastic washer is on the left side of the bracket (see image
below or next page).
Step 4:
Start by placing the top edge of the bracket against the windshield, aligned
with the marks, and make sure it is level.
Step 5:
Press the bracket firmly against the windshield starting at the top and pressing
the sides downward.
CAUTION: Do not apply excessive pressure as it may cause the windshield to
break.
Step 6:
Check from outside the vehicle to make sure there are no large air bubbles
under the bracket.
Note: You may need to (carefully) apply additional pressure to the bracket and
remove any large air bubbles. Use a small pin to create an escape path for the
air if the problem is persistent.
Step 7 :
After 5 minutes of adherence, the event recorder can be attached to the base
of the bracket.
Step 8:
Secure the event recorder in the bracket using the two Torx screws and Torx
wrench (provided).
Mount the Event Recorder in the Bracket
CAUTION: The adhesive is very sticky. Once
applied to the windshield, it cannot easily be removed.
© 2016 Lytx, Inc. Confidential & Proprietary 16
1. Place the event recorder in the bracket.
2. Adjust the event recorder so it hangs vertically (plumb).
3. Secure the event recorder in the bracket using the two Torx screws and Torx wrench
(provided).
Bracket Washer Placement:
The large plastic washer on the left side of the bracket is designed to partially cover the
power cable connector so that it cannot be unplugged by the driver.
The plastic washers can be removed from the metal bracket if you need to switch sides
after mounting.
Make sure the larger of the two washers is on the left side.
Mounting Overhead with the Extended Bracket (Bulkhead)
The DC3P Extended Mounting Bracket is most commonly used in large commercial vehicles where
the windshield mount is not always an option. It is also used in vehicles operating in jurisdictions
where windshield mounting is restricted. The bracket can be rotated, but is usually hung vertically
as close to the windshield and center of the vehicle as possible. There is no tape on the bracket.
Instead, four small screws secure it to a bulkhead or ceiling. Adjustment of the interior lens is
often required when using this bracket.
© 2016 Lytx, Inc. Confidential & Proprietary 17
COMMON MISTAKE: Large commercial vehicles often have many objects near the top of the
windshield (e.g. large sun visors, window tint, circulation fans, etc.) that can block both the interior
and exterior-facing lens. To avoid this, you must carefully consider the mounting location. Hold
the VER in a potential location while rotating sun visors, running windshield wipers, etc. until you
are certain that the location cannot be obstructed.
1. Loosen the Torx screws so the VER can rotate in the bracket.
2. Position the assembly as close to the windshield and center of the vehicle as possible.
a. Make sure the VER does not block the driver’s view of the road
b. Make sure the exterior-facing lens has a clear view out the windshield (look for
obstructions)
c. Make sure the interior-facing lens cannot be blocked by sun visors or other objects
d. Make sure the mounting surface is solid and can be safely drilled
3. Mark the position and pre-drill the screw holes. Be careful not to drill or screw into wires or
other components.
Basic Event Recorder Electrical Connections
WARNING Only a properly qualified technician should install and maintain the DC3P. Any
electrical work should be performed by an ASE CERTIFIED (MINIMUM T6 & L2) TECHNICIAN with an
expertise in installing and troubleshooting advanced vehicle onboard components including
multiplexed circuits.
The black, red and brown wires are the three required connections for the event recorder to

© 2016 Lytx, Inc. Confidential & Proprietary 18
source. The brown wire is an ignition-sense, used by the event recorder to perform functions
such as activating the IR Illuminator when the vehicle ignition is switched on. The black wire is
ground.
Wiring Suggestions
WARNING You must always disconnect the battery ground cable before you work on an electrical
system. It is also recommended that the vehicle battery be disconnected before starting on the
wiring section of the installation.
WARNING only approved wire connection methods are recommended. Refer to the vehicle
manufacturer’s service manual to determine if Add-A-Circuit, Posi-Tap, sealing butt connections, or
OEM connections to open connection ports are approved. Never use plier tap products such as
scotch locks when installing the DC3P.
WARNING - Never wire the DC3P in a manner that share a connection with another aftermarket
product in the vehicle. Independent connections should always be used.
WARNING Take all necessary measures to protect all wire runs through a metal surface with a
grommet or other device and all wire runs outside the vehicle cab with a loom. Always protect
against wire fatigue and harness abrasion by properly attaching wires at closely spaced intervals,
while avoiding contact with sharp edges. All wires should be secured with tire wraps at least every
two feet or less. Do not overtighten any tie wraps.
WARNING Consult the vehicle manufacturer for the location of any airbag sensors and systems
and restrictions that may apply. Make certain that neither the cable more your installation
activities interferes with any airbag related mechanisms or otherwise risks affecting airbag
deployment.
In order to properly install the DC3P, you must first identify the correct wiring alternative to be
used for the event recorder. Always consult the vehicle manufacturer’s service manual to choose
the best electrical connection for the DC3P.
The information below is only a supplement and is not intended to be a replacement for the
vehicle manufacturer’s service manual:
Connecting the RED WIRE to a 12V-24V power source that is ALWAYS ON
The event recorder always remains “on.”
Requires a power source that is not controlled by the key nor any other device or switch.
Connection is typically made just after the fuse box on the battery-side of any vehicle
control modules.
© 2016 Lytx, Inc. Confidential & Proprietary 19
Use a voltmeter to make sure the circuit provides continuous 12V or 24V power when the
key is removed from the ignition and all lights, devices and switches are off.
Current Draw
Tapping into an existing vehicle wire, make sure it can handle the additional current draw of
the event recorder.
A wire that reads 12V on a voltmeter may not necessarily be able to supply enough current
to the existing circuit and the event recorder.
Gauge of wire being tapped into provides a good indication. A larger gauge wire is often the
best choice, but make sure to test it with a load.
Connecting the BROWN WIRE to a 12V-24V power source that is IGNITION-SWITCHED
Used to sense when the ignition is switched on.
Requires a power source that is “on” only when the key is turned all the way forward to the
“on” position and when the engine is running.
CAUTION Test the connection before completing any further installation procedures.
Common Mistake
This connection is often (mistakenly) made to a modulated circuit one that comes out of a
computer control module running some subsystem in the vehicle which can give false ignition
on/off signals. To avoid this, make sure to connect this wire to a circuit that is on the battery side
of any modules. Consult the vehicle wiring schematics or a local authorized dealership to obtain
this information.
Route the DC3P Cable
You may need to remove the window and door trim to route the cable underneath. These typically
snap on and off using special clips. In vehicles with side and curtain airbags, the clips are often
IMPORTANT: Needs to be connected properly
or can give false ignition signals.
CAUTION: An improper connection could impact the
program and functionality (i.e.-fleet tracking, hibernation, etc.)
