FOREWORD
The Zoom-Nikkor 80-200mm f/4 is a newly designed and improved version
of the 80-200mm f/4.5 zoom lens. It offers a larger maximum aperture and
a closer minimum focusing distance of 1.2m (4 ft) compared to the older
lens model. The lens has an optical construction of 13 elements in 9 groups
and an attachment size of 62mm. For faster, more convenient handling, the
same ring is used to focus and zoom. You turn the ring to focus, and you
push or pull to zoom in or out. And because the lens has a higher speed,
making the image in the viewfinder brighter, focusing is easier. Image quality
is up, too. Aberrations are well corrected, especially in the shorter focal
length range. The result is optimum performance, from the shortest to the
longest focal length—crisp images with high contrast, far or near. Nikon
Integrated Coating (NIC), applied on all air-to-glass surfaces to minimize
ghost and flare, makes for natural color rendition. The lens offers "automat-
ic maximum aperture indexing" (Al) with suitably equipped Nikon cameras
(except F-401/N4004*) via the meter coupling ridge provided. The ridge and
the auto diaphragm function together to permit full-aperture exposure meas-
urement. To allow similar operation with non-AI type Nikon cameras, the lens
is also fitted with a meter coupling shoe. Additionally, there's
a
depth-of-field
scale with curved lines which you can use to obtain a depth-of-field reading
at any focal length.
*The Nikon N4004 is sold exclusively in the
U.S.A.
MOUNTING THE LENS-A
Position the lens in the camera's bayonet mount, lining up the aperture
index on the lens with the lens mounting index on the camera. Twist the
lens counterclockwise until it clicks into place.
To remove, depress the lens release button on the camera and twist the lens
clockwise.
Notes:
\) When mounting the lens on a camera with
a
fift-up meter coupling lever (Al type), make
sure that the camera's meter coupling lever is correctly positioned; when mounting on
a camera without this lever (non-AI type), "manual" maximum aperture indexing is re-
quired.
In both cases, refer to the camera's instruction manual.
2) When the lens is used with the Nikon F-401/N4004, the camera meter coupling func-
tion does not operate and the exposure indicator LEDs do not appear.
FOCUSING B
The Zoom-Nikkor 80-200mm f/4 focuses from infinity down to four feet
8
and meters on the focusing
ring.
Line up the white indicator line opposite
the camera-to-subject distance as measured or estimated.
Recommended Focusing Screens
Various interchangeable focusing screens are available for Nikon F3- and F2-
series cameras to suit any type of lens or picture-taking situation. Those
which are recommended for use with this Zoom-Nikkor 80-200mm f/4 lens
are listed below. For screens used with Nikon cameras other than F3- and
F2-series cameras
(e.g.,
Nikon FA, FE2, FM2 and FE), refer to the column
for F3-series cameras. For the K2, B2 and E2 focusing screens, refer to the
columns on the K, B and E screens, respectively. For details, also refer to
the specific focusing screen's instruction sheet.

* At close focused distance, vignetting or other image deterioration may occur.
©= Excellent focusing
(§)= Acceptable focusing
The split-image rangefinder, microprism or cross-hair area is dim. Focus on the
surrounding matte area.
0= Acceptable focusing
Slight vignetting (or moire phenomenon, in case of the microprism) affects the
screen image. The image on the
film,
however, shows no trace of this.
= Exposure measurement not possible
Lens/screen combination permits only focusing operation.
( )= Indicates degree of exposure compensation.
Blank means inapplicable.
9
To zoom in or out, look through the viewfinder and slide the focusing ring
back and forth until the desired composition is framed on the focusing
screen.
As the ring is pushed forward for shorter focal lengths, a five-
position scale is uncovered on the lens barrel to show which focal length
the lens is set for. To preset the lens for a specific focal length, align the
edge of the focusing ring with the top edge of the digits.
D
DEPTH-OF-FIELD SCALE
A group of colored lines, curving out toward the front of the lens, are
engraved on the lens barrel. To find the depth of field at a particular focal
length and aperture, first compose and focus the lens on the subject. Then
check the numbers on the distance scale opposite the colored lines to find
the depth of field at that aperture. The colors of the pairs of lines
correspond to different lens apertures. The continuous curved lines of the
depth-of-field scale give the reading at any focal length. You can also
observe the depth of field through the viewfinder by pressing the
depth-of-field preview button on the camera.
INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY E
In infrared photography, the plane of sharpest focus is slightly more distant
than the one produced by visible light. As a rule of thumb, you can compen-
sate for shift in focus by referring to the curved red infrared line engraved
between the depth-of-field index lines on the lens barrel.
After sharply focusing the subject through the viewfinder, check the focused
distance and turn the focusing ring to the left until the prefocused distance
figure is aligned with the infrared compensation line. Then attach the filter
to the lens and take the picture.

LENS CARE
Although you should always keep the lens surfaces clean, rough cleaning must be
avoided.
Wipe with a soft, clean cotton cloth moistened with alcohol to remove
grease or fingerprints from the lens surfaces.
If you use ether in cleaning the lens, a smudge sometimes appears on the surface of a
multi-coated lens. If this happens, wipe it again with a cotton cloth moistened with
alcohol.
To protect the lens surface from dirt or damage, the use of an L37C filter is recom-
mended at all times. The lens hood also helps to protect the lens.
Keep the lens cap in place whenever the lens is not in use.
Attach both the front and rear caps when the lens is stored separately.
To ensure proper fit of the lens when stored in the leather lens case, set the lens'
focusing ring to the infinity (°°) setting.
