Precautions
Temperature
Be sure the temperature inside the vehicle is
between +60˚C (+140˚F) and –10˚C (+14˚F)
before turning your unit on.
Fuse Replacement
When replacing the fuse(s), the replacement
must be of the same amperage as shown on
the fuse holder. If the fuse(s) blows more than
once, carefully check all electrical connections
for shorted circuitry. Also have your vehicle's
voltage regulator checked.
Maintenance
If you have problems, do not attempt to repair
the unit yourself. Return it to your Alpine dealer
or the nearest Alpine Service Station for
servicing.
Installation Location
Make sure the PXA-H600 will not be exposed
to:
Direct sun and heat
High humidity
Excessive dust
Excessive vibrations

Basic Operation
Initial System Start-Up
When operating the unit for the first time after
installation or after the vehicle's battery has
been disconnected and reconnected, set the
volume level to its minimum, then press the
Reset switch with a ball-point pen or any other
pointed object.

Power On or Off
The unit is turned OFF or ON from the head
unit's Power switch.
Operating procedures for
use with non-Ai-NET Head
Units
Setting Input Level
Before operating the PXA-H600, the input level
from the head unit needs to be properly
adjusted. If proper adjustment is not made,
optimum Signal-to-Noise ratio cannot be
obtained. Following the procedures below will
ensure that optimum sound quality will be
achieved.
Adjust the input level using the Volume
control on the head unit.
After setting the input level, use the
PXA-H600 to make any volume adjust-
ments. Whenever the input level becomes
excessive, the "OVER" (overrange) indicator
will flash in the display. To minimize
distortion and for the best possible sound,
adjust the input level so the "OVER"
indicator no longer flashes.
If the "OVER" indicator comes on when
using a different source, repeat the above
procedure for the new source.

With each press, Defeat is toggled between On
and Off. When the Defeat On mode is selected,
"DEFEAT" appears in the display for 5 seconds
then disappears. In the Defeat On mode, the
Parametric EQ and TCR indicators do not
appear.

What is Automatic Adjust-
ment Feature
Sound reflections are the cause of much of the
distortion that occurs in a vehicle. These
reflections are caused by sound from the
speakers bouncing off of surfaces like the
windows, door panels, headliner, etc. Because
these reflected sounds take a more indirect
path before reaching your ears, they arrive
slightly later than the direct sound. This delay
causes the reflected sounds to be out-of-phase
with the direct sound. Naturally, the amount and
intensity of these reflected sounds will depend
upon the type of vehicle, speakers, and other
installation variables. The speaker’s character-
istic varies depending upon its enclosure.
Now, for the first time in any product, Alpine has
developed unique circuitry for the PXA-H600
that can help cancel these reflections. These
problems are more audible at low frequencies,
therefore PXA-H600 will automatically compen-
sate for phase shifting as well as time correction
for the Subwoofer. The Front and Rear outputs
for full-range satellites can also be adjusted
automatically for listening position. When
properly adjusted, the music will sound clear
and natural.

Graphic and parametric equaliz-
ers can only correct for fre-
quency and level
Graphic and parametric equalizers are
designed to compensate for differences in
level at different frequencies. These devices
cannot do anything about the time differ-
ences and phase characteristics of the
vehicle. The PXA-H600 can make all these
adjustments.
DSP Surround processors add
reflections and delays
DSP surround processors add echoes (time
delays) to simulate the sound reflections of a
concert hall environment. On the other hand,
the PXA-H600 tries to eliminate any
reflections not found on the original record-
ing (produced by the vehicle). As a result,
the music is reproduced as close to the
original recording on the CD as possible.

Before Performing Automatic
Adjustments
The state-of-the-art DSP technology used in the
PXA-H600 enables it to correct many of the
anomalies found in today's vehicle installations.
In order to effectively take advantage of this
unique technology, please follow the operating
procedures as described below.
After making all the proper connections
according to the installation manual, set the
power amps and head unit per instructions
below. Confirm that all outputs (for front, rear
and subwoofer) are working properly. If the
subwoofer is not active, the automatic adjust-
ment feature will not work.
Front/Rear/Amp:
Gain = Nominal (Center)
Subwoofer Amp:
Gain = Nominal (Center)
Head Unit:
Balance Fader = Center
Notes: The PXA-H600 is designed to
obtain the best characteristics when
it is set at the positions shown.
When rear speakers are not
connected to the system, you make
connections as described in the
section "When rear speakers are
not connected" on the Owner's
Manual.

When Step 1 has been performed, move the
vehicle to a quiet place and turn off its engine.
Place the ignition key in the ACC position and
perform the following automatic adjustment
procedure.

Automatic Adjustment Pro-
cedure
Place the supplied microphone in your vehicle to
approximate your ideal listening position. When
the PXA-H600 makes the adjustment, it will
optimize the sound for the microphone's position.
For example, placing the microphone on the
driver's seat headrest will optimize the sound
for the driver. Placing it on the front passenger's
headrest will optimize the sound for the
passenger.

You can now store the results in one of the 6
memory locations. If desired, move the
microphone to another location and repeat the
above procedure. By storing your results for
each position in memory, you can make
settings for each passenger in the vehicle to be
recalled at any time.
Notes: The values obtained in the automatic
adjustment procedure may differ from
the actual measurements because of
the sound reflections and speaker
placement.
The PXA-H600 is designed so that
only direct sound waves reach your
ears from the speakers by cancelling
undesirable sound reflections, do not
place any obstacles between you and
the speakers (except vehicle's seats).

Position the Control Unit (RUA-4260) in a spot
visible from outside the vehicle. Press and hold
the TCR button for 2 seconds. The display will
show "NOW ADJ." for 5 seconds. During this
period, get out of the vehicle and close the door
before the display changes.
If the automatic procedure starts properly, the
unit will adjust the gain, time correction and
phase by generating white noise through the
system. The entire procedure will take about 4
minutes. Upon completion, the display will show
"COMPLETE."

The output for the subwoofer is
monaural signal.
When the automatic adjustments
have been carried out, the settings
are:
Parametric/EQ: Flat (level 0)
Subwoofer Fc: 200Hz
Time Correction: Measured value
If the subwoofer is installed in the
vehicle's trunk, the compensation
function of the unit cannot be
performed properly. In order to have
the compensation function work
effectively, try the followings.
If your vehicle is a sedan with
the trunk-through construction,
pull down the rear seat. Install
a 6-1/2" or larger size speaker
onto the rear deck to use it as
a subwoofer, or install the
subwoofer enclosure inside the
vehicle room.
If an acrylic resin board is
attached to the front of the
speaker enclosure, remove the
acrylic resin board.

Press and hold the TCR button for more than 2
seconds to activate the Auto Adjustment mode.
1. "NOW ADJ." appears in the display.
2. The unit automatically performs adjustments
of the Gain Characteristic.
3. The unit automatically performs adjustments
of the Time Correction.
4. The unit automatically performs adjustments
of the Phase Characteristic.
5. "COMPLETE" appears in the display and the
automatic adjustment mode ends.

canceled in the middle of its opera-
tion, the original settings cannot be
restored. For this reason, be sure to
store your settings in memory before
starting the Auto Adjustment
procedure.

Adjusting Time Correction
Time Correction:
The distance between the listener and the
speakers in a car varies widely due to the
special conditions of the mobile environment.
This difference in the distances from the
speakers to the listener creates a shift in the
sound image and frequency characteristics.
This is caused by the time delay between the
sound reaching the listener's right ear versus
left ear.
To correct this, the PXA-H600 is able to delay
the audio signal to the speakers closest to the
listener. This effectively creates a perception of
increased distance for those speakers. The
listener can be placed at an equal distance
between the left and right speakers for optimum
staging.
The adjustment will be made for each speaker
in a step of 0.1ms.

Adjust the time correction level of the front left
speaker to a high value and the rear right to
zero or a low value. (See the Illustration.)
Example 2. Listening Position: All Seats
Adjust the time correction level of each speaker
to almost the same level. (See the Illustration.)

Storing in Memory
You can store your personally adjusted settings
for Parametric-EQ, Time Correction and the
settings obtained with Auto Adjustment in
memory.
When you have adjusted the settings for your
preference and you wish to store them in
memory, press and hold the MEMO button for
at least 2 seconds.
The Memory indicators blink for 5 seconds
showing the unit is ready for storing.
Press the or button to select one of the
MEMO location numbers (MEMO 1 to MEMO 6)
into which you want to store your settings.
