The Sawafuji Swing Motor is a true

reciprocating compressor; it has only one

moving part. It doesn’t get any simpler. The

piston is connected to an electro dynamic

device which is powered by the use of

magnetic fields. With this technology there

is no need for bearings, cranks or con-

rods, so less moving parts means less

chance of failure. With only one moving

part there is a very low friction loss which

means this is a highly efficient compressor.

It has no high start up current draw

because when it starts up it can simply

move down just a fraction then return.

Then it slowly increases the distance the

piston travels each stroke until it reaches a

full stroke. The Sawafuji Swing Motor does

not need to perform a full stroke on start up

unlike many rotary type compressors that

must perform a complete cycle and need

much more current to start.

The Sawafuji Swing Motor is located inside

the compressor casing with pins locating

in rubber bushes then suspended in

between shock absorbent springs. It

operates at 30 degrees angles and on

rough corrugated tracks without losing

efficiency.

For many of us who go fishing, the promise

of providing a meal or two of fresh seafood

for ourselves, our families and our friends

is a major attraction. Naturally, we need to

balance this with our responsibilities to the

law, the future of the resource and

prevailing public attitudes, but thankfully

there’s still room for both catch-and-release

and catch-and-kill angling in this country.

We owe it to ourselves and to the fish we

keep to look after our catch and maintain it

in the best possible condition between the

water and our plates. An Engel portable

fridge/freezer can be an invaluable tool in

this process.

CARING FOR THE CATCH

Bacteria begin to multiply in the internal

organs and flesh of a fish from the moment

of death. If they reach high enough

concentrations, these bacteria may begin

to seriously degrade the flavour and

nutritional value of the fish. Ultimately, they

can also pose a health risk to anyone

consuming the fish.

The greatest concentrations of bacteria

occur in the stomach cavity and intestines,

particularly if these organs contain partially

digested food. Removing the fish’s innards

and washing its stomach cavity then

wiping it dry with kitchen paper will

dramatically reduce the growth and spread

of bacteria.

Bacteria multiply much faster at higher

temperatures, and more slowly in colder

conditions. For these reasons, cleaning fish

promptly and keeping them cool is a vital

part of the process of preparing them for the

table.

Get into the habit of killing, bleeding and

cleaning fish as soon as possible after

capture, then lower their body temperature

by the use of ice, an ice slurry, or by

wrapping them in paper or clingwrap

plastic and placing them directly into your

Engel.

ICE SLURRY

The best option when caring for fish in the

field or out on the water, especially prior to

cleaning them, is to place them in an ice

slurry. This is a mixture of cube or chunk

ice and saltwater; ideally ordinary sea

water. If the ice itself has been made with

sea water to begin with, so much the better.

In the field, you can make ice in your Engel

by freezing water in plastic containers.

In an insulated cooler, add just enough sea

water to the ice to make a thick slurry.

Place the fish directly into this slurry after

killing and bleeding them. Push the fish

well beneath the surface of the slurry. An

ice slurry keeps fish very cold and

maintains their colour and eye clarity,

greatly enhancing both their appearance

and keeping qualities. However, avoid

leaving fish in a slurry for more than four to

six hours, and remove fish earlier from any

slurry that is heavily tainted with blood and

slime, or in which all the ice has melted.

Clean or fillet the fish as soon as they are

removed from the slurry, dry them and

wrap in plastic, aluminium foil or paper

before placing in the Engel.

FREEZING FISH

Fish can be frozen for consumption at a

later date, but almost all seafood benefits

from being eaten fresh; within 12 to 48

hours of capture. Treated this way, its

flavour and nutritional value are at their

very best.

Fish and other seafoods can be stored

unfrozen in your Engel for several days

without significant deterioration, so long as

they are maintained at temperatures below

5 or 6 degrees C and not allowed to lie in

melted water. Fish that’s to be kept for

longer periods should be frozen as soon as

possible after capture.

To freeze fish or fish pieces, wrap them

tightly in cling wrap or aluminium foil to

exclude all air and bring the temperature

down as rapidly as possible. The colder the

holding temperature, the longer frozen fish

will maintain its quality. Frozen fish should

not be kept for longer than three months,

and species with high oil or fat contents

(trout, salmon, tuna, mullet, herring and so

on) are best consumed within a month of

capture.

game to fishing writers and TV celebrities

new TV series ‘Hooked on Adventure’ they

made sure they were well equipped with the

most efficient and reliable gear. According

WITH YOUR ENGEL

For safety have your Engel secured to

your vehicle with an approved fixing

device (see accessories). Have an

auto electrician check that your

accessory plug is the correct

amperage and if your outlet is at the

rear of your vehicle ensure that at least

6mm cable has been installed.

Ensure your Engel has plenty of

ventilation. Place your Engel facing

one side of your vehicles so that other

equipment can’t block the ventilation.

Be aware that your vehicle battery

may not provide enough power to start

your vehicle after running your

fridge/freezer for extended periods (see

accessories).

TRIP PREPARATION

A quick getaway or the trip of a lifetime

with your Engel means you want to be

able to throw some food in the Engel

and head off at a moments notice.

For a short break the amount of

planning required is usually minimal -

just grab some gear and food and

you’re off! The spontaneity almost

says no planning required. If you have

forgotten something it doesn’t matter,

either grab it at the shop or go without

it. The reverse happens for the big trip

as you could be miles from anywhere

and the detail in the planning will

really pay off. The most important

thing is to make a list a few weeks

before you head off and pre pack as

much gear as possible and

compartmentalise everything in

storage bags or containers so you can

find everything easily - eg. kitchen

gear in one container, dry food in

another.

There are a number of options on how

to keep your food on a trip. Personal

preferences on food type, space in

your vehicle, whether you’re travelling

in a group, length of your trip and

availability to shops to name just a

few. The main choice with an Engel is

whether to use it as a fridge or a

freezer.

FRIDGE OR FREEZER

When travelling on a long trip you

may wish to keep your Engel as a

freezer and utilise an esky or ice box

to keep your days food. Use your

Engel to freeze ice bricks and then

transfer to the cooler. To maximise

freezing performance pack meat into

meal size containers and store,

ensuring adequate airflow around

each container.

TRAVELLING WITH FRIENDS

If you’re travelling with a friend, who

has an Engel, and you are cooking

meals together, you can plan menus

so that you can run one Engel as a

fridge and the other as a freezer - or

even better, one of the latest

technology combination

fridge/freezers, for those who have the

space to carry the MT60F-Combi or

the MT80F-Combi. Separate fridge

and freezer compartments make both

units a breeze to operate.

EXTENDED STAYS

If you’re planning to stay in one

location, store your Engel in cool

locations; preferably a shady spot

were there is a breeze. Having an

Engel transit bag also assists in the

efficiency of the unit in extreme

temperatures.

If you’re using a generator make sure

the leads are kept dry. You can turn off

the generator overnight safely without

damaging the food as long as you

don’t open the unit too often.

FOOD STORAGE

When packing your vehicle always

keep in mind things that you need

most frequently. Have a kitchen box

and your Engel conveniently placed so

you have ready access to food. Also

ensure that your Engel and other

storage items are secure in case of an
