MATADOR INSTRUCTION MANUAL 5
Gas cylinder safety
• Do not store gas cylinders below ground level. LP
gas is heavier than air so if a leak occurs the gas
will collect at a low level and could ignite in the
presence of a ame or spark.
• Do not store or use LP gas cylinders on their side
as this could allow liquid gas into the supply pipes
with serious results.
• Leak test your grill before each use. Leak test the
hose connections each time you reconnect the gas
cylinder (refer to page 7).
• Always turn off the gas at the cylinder when not in
use.
Hose and regulator safety
In the case of a problem arising with the hose and
regulator please contact your BBQ supplier for a
list of approved replacement parts .The hose and
regulator assembly parts must be an Australian Gas
Association approved part.
• GAC-001 2kg LPG Regulator AGA#6735.
• GAC Hose 8mm Class “A” MWP 2.8kPa.
Connecting and disconnecting the gas supply
/ cylinder connections
If you need to disconnect the gas supply for any
reason, always ensure that all gas controls on
the appliance and on the cylinder are off before
disconnecting or removing the gas cylinder. Do not
smoke or use a nakedame near the appliance or
gas cylinder while connecting or disconnecting the
gas line.
If installed in an enclosure, remove the gas cylinder
from the enclosure before disconnecting the gas line
from the appliance. Tighten all connections before
placing the gas cylinder back in its enclosure
Modifications
Any modication of the appliance may be dangerous
and void the warranty.
In case of fire
If you have a re you cannot extinguish, turn gas
cylinder off and call your re department. Do not call
near the LP gas tank because your telephone is an
electrical device and could create a spark resulting in
re and/or explosion.
Smell of gas
A strong gas smell or the hissing sound of gas
indicates a serious problem with your gas grill or the
LP gas tank. Failure to immediately follow the steps
listed below could cause serious bodily injury, death,
or property damage.
• Shut off gas supply to the gas grill.
• Turn the control knobs to OFF position.
• Put out any ame with a class B re extinguisher.
• Open grill lid.
• Get away from the LP gas tank.
• Do not try to x the problem yourself.
If odour continues or you have a re you cannot
extinguish, call your re department. Do not call
near the LP gas tank because your telephone is an
electrical device and could create a spark resulting in
re and/or explosion.
NOTE: The normal ow of gas through the Regulator
and Hose Assembly can create a humming sound. A
low volume of sound is perfectly normal and will not
interfere with operation of the grill.
WARNING!
DO NOT USE NAKED FLAME FOR LOCATING GAS LEAKS. IF
A LEAK PERSISTS, CALL AN AUTHORISED PERSON.
STORE CYLINDER IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA OUT OF
REACH OF CHILDREN.

connections. If there is a leak, bubbles should appear
within about 20 seconds. If you nd any leaks, tighten
the connection. If the leaks persist, contact your place
of purchase.
As an alternative, you may use the gas fuse, following
the manufacturer’s instructions, available at all major
barbeque retailers. This provides an easier way to
check for leaks.
SAFE OPERATION OF yOUR
bARbEqUE
Lighting – battery changes
Periodically check battery for power and acid leaks
to prevent malfunctioning and to ensure longevity of
electrical components.
After use
• Always ensure gas supply and all control knobs are
turned off.
• Always allow time for bbq to cool after use.
• Clean cooking surface, drip tray and burners to
prevent build up of excessive grease, oil and fat.
Protect children
• Always keep young children away from bbq during
use and after use.
• Do not allow young children to operate this bbq.
• Gas cylinders should be kept out of reach from
young children.
bARbEqUE CHECKS
Check your barbeque for any damage
Open the door of the frame to inspect the hose
before each use. If there is evidence of excessive
abrasion or wear, or the hose is cut it must be
replaced prior to the outdoor gas grill being put into
operation. Only use the hose and regulator supplied
from the manufacturer.
Burner operation and ignition system check
These barbeques are equipped with automatic
ignition, as indicated on the front face of the
barbeque frame. It works by throwing a ame to the
side of the burner to light. Push the knob in and turn
anticlockwise to the high position. You should hear
and feel a click from the knob. Hold the knob in until
the burner ignites.
If the burner doesn’t light on the rst attempt, return
the knob to the “OFF” position and try a couple more
times. If the burner still does not light, wait a few
minutes to allow the gas to disperse before trying
again.
Leak testing
This should be done the rst time you connect up
the barbeque, and again every time you disconnect
and reconnect any tting. Inspect the hose before
each use.
Turn the gas on at the cylinder, or make sure
gas is available to the barbeque, but do not turn
the burners on. This lls the gas lines with gas.
Now brush or pour some soapy water onto all

CONNECTING &
DISCONNECTING GAS
Make sure all barbeque control knobs are in the off
position. Connect the regulator to the gas cylinder
according to your regulator and cylinder dealer’s
instructions. The thread/tting used between the
regulator and the gas cylinder is 5/8” - 18 UNF for
the bbq end and 7/8” Type 21 left hand P.O.L.
Thread for the gas cylinder end. Secure all joints
spanner (wrench) tight but do not over-tighten.
First time seasoning the hotplate
During manufacturing, the cooking surfaces were
coated with a non-toxic paint. This paint will come
off completely over time. Its purpose is purely to
help protect your barbeque during transport and
storage.
Coat the hotplate with canola oil or something
similar. Light the barbeque as above. Leave the
barbeque with all burners on low for about 30
minutes. Paint may come off at this time. Now
clean the surface. The hotplate is now cured
and ready for use. This process only needs to
be done the rst time you use the barbeque. For
ongoing protection of the cooking surfaces, follow
the procedures in the Cleaning, Storage and
Maintenance sections.
Lighting procedure
• Lighting the barbeque is easy, but must be done
with due care.
• Make sure that gas is turned on at the cylinder,
or that gas is available to the barbeque.
• Make sure the LPG cylinder is lled.
• Check that the end of each burner tube is
properly located over each valve orice.
• Make sure all gas connections are securely
tightened.
• Open the grill lid.
• To light burner, push and turn the control knob
counter clockwise to high.
• Line the grease tray with crumpled aluminum foil.
If burner fails to light, turn control knob to off, wait
for 5 minutes and repeat the same procedures.
If burner still fails to light, turn control knob to off
again, wait for 5 minutes. Push and turn the next
control knob counter clockwise to high to light
burner, then turn the burner (failed to light burner)
to high and you should see the burner alight.
Manual lighting
Place a lighted match or gas lighter (not provided)
to the right or left hand side of the main burner.
Keep your hand below the bottom of the burner
while doing this. Now turn the burner on. You
should see the burner alight. Repeat to light the
other burners.

COOKING TIPS
FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES TO KEEP FOOD
MOIST AND SUCCULENT ON A BARBEQUE:
Before cooking, coat the hotplate with oil. This will
prevent food from sticking. Light the burners and
leave on high for about 3~5minutes to warm the
barbeque up.
Resist the temptation to keep turning meat over.
Juices tend to rise to the top of a piece of meat and
then settle. Each time you turn the meat over, the
juices are lost.
Baste the food with a light marinade or canola oil a
couple of times while cooking, though watch out for
excessive are-up.
As an alternative to simply grilling, try marinating
your meat, sh, poultry or vegetables rst. As you
leave food to stand in the marinade, the avors
soak through. It is best to leave food standing in the
refrigerator. To prevent meat from charring/burning,
slash the remaining fat at roughly 5 cm intervals.
Frozen meat and poultry should be defrosted in the
refrigerator before cooking. The same care should
be taken with any frozen food to ensure it is safe to
consume.
Avoid burning or charring food as this has been
shown to be unhealthy. Do not leave cooked food
standing for too long before eating.
DO NOT REPLACE THE GRILL WITH ALL
HOTPLATES AS THIS MAY CAUSE THE
BARBEQUE TO OVERHEAT. IT IS ALWAYS
NECESSARY TO HAVE AT LEAST ONE GRILL
PLATE TO ALLOW FOR PROPER VENTILATION.
MATADOR KC003 BBQ manual.indd 11 1/07/2011 10:37:49 AM
CARE &
MAINTENANCE
Apart from cleaning, your barbeque is a fairly low
maintenance item. A couple of things are worth
looking at though. Remember to turn off and
disconnect the gas before any maintenance is
carried out.
1. If your barbeque uses a exible hose to connect
to the gas, check the rubber O-ring on the
regulator end of the hose assembly at least once
a year. If it appears worn or cracked, have it
replaced.
2. If you use a portable LPG gas cylinder, you will
need to have the cylinder serviced or replaced
every ten years. The date of the last service
should be stamped on the neck of the bottle.
3. Keep the outdoor gas grill area clear and free
from combustible materials, gasoline, and other
ammable vapours or liquids.
4. Make sure there is no obstruction surrounding the
grill, which may block the ow of combustion and
ventilation air.
Cleaning
Your barbeque will look better and last longer if you
keep it clean.
You should check the burners before lighting the
BBQ for any sort of blockage. To do this, remove
and inspect them. If any of the holes are clogged,
gently tap the burner onto a hard surface to remove
residue. Use a wire brush to unclog the holes. Once
this is done, lightly coat the burners with oil to help
protect them from rust.
Grease can build up on the frame itself. Most of it
can be cleaned off with hot water. Use a non-caustic
cleanser for more stubborn stains.
Burner Maintenance
To reduce chances of “ FLASH-BACK’ the
procedure below should be followed at least once a
month in late summer or early fall when spiders are
most active or when your grill has not been used for
a period of time.
1. Turn all burners’ valves to the full OFF position.
2. Turn the LPG cylinder valve (clockwise) to the full
OFF position.
3. Detach the regulator assembly from the LPG
cylinder by turning the Quick Coupling Nut
clockwise.
4. Remove the warming rack, cast iron grill, hotplate
and drip tray from your grill.
5. Remove all burners from the bottom of the grill
bowl by pulling the burner clip beneath burner.
Use a screwdriver or needle nose pliers.
6. Carefully lift each burner up and away from the gas
valve orice.
7. Refer to gure below and perform one of these
three cleaning methods.
i) Bend a stiff wire, (a lightweight coat hanger
works well) into a small hook as shown below. Run
the hook through the burner tube and inside the
burner several times to remove any debris.
ii) Use a bottle brush with a exible handle. Run
the brush through the burner tube and inside the
burner several times, removing any debris.
ii) Use an air hose to force air through each
burner tube. The forced air should pass debris or
obstructions through the burner and out the ports.
8. Regardless of which burner cleaning procedure
you use, we recommend you also complete the
following steps to help prolong burner life.
Use a wire brush to clean the entire outer
surface of each burner until free of food residue,
and dirt.
Clean with clogged ports wire, such as open
paper clip.
MATADOR KC003 BBQ manual.indd 12 1/07/2011 10:37:49 AM
MATADOR INSTRUCTION MANUAL 13
Inspect each burner after installation, check to
ensure that the gas valve orices are correctly
placed inside the end of the burner tubes. Also
check the position of your spark electrode.
Blowback
‘Blowback’ is a situation where the ame burns
inside the burner, towards the front, recognized by a
sharp roaring sound coming from the burner. It is not
dangerous unless allowed to persist. If this occurs,
simply turn the burner off, wait a few seconds, and
then relight.
Cleaning the drip tray
You should empty the fat tray after using the BBQ.
Warning: Never touch the grease tray until the
barbeque and fat have cooled down completely.
Keep a clearance for the removal of the grease tray.
The grease tray needs to be cleaned periodically.
Line the grease tray with foil (not kitty litter or any
combustible material). Regularly clean and replace
the foil.
Storage
1. Ensure the grill is properly cooled.
2. Storage of this gas grill indoors is permissible only
if the gas cylinder is disconnected and removed
from the grill.
3. Store the grill in a cool dry place.
4. Always disconnect the gas cylinder and store it in
a safe place, never store a gas cylinder on its side.
5. Never store a gas cylinder in a building, garage or
any other enclosed area.
6. If you intend to leave your grill outside make sure
it is protected from the elements by a heavy-duty
cover (not included).
7. Keep outdoor cooking gas grill area clear and free
form combustible materials, gasoline and other
ammable vapors and liquids.
Covers
A BBQ cover is also recommended to cover your
BBQ and maintain and protect from all weather
conditions.
Trolley and wheels
The BBQ are partly made from 201 Grade Stainless
Steel. To maintain the stainless steel surface of your
BBQ, place it under covered area when not in use.
Service
We recommend having your barbeque checked by
an authorised service agent every 5 years. This is to
ensure there are no leaks and that all components are
still functioning correctly.
