SpeakerSelectionandPlacement
Theplacementofspeakersina multichannelhome
theatersystemcanhaveanoticeableimpactonthe
qualityofsoundreproduced.
Nomatterwhichtypeor brandof speakersisused,
thesamemodelor brandof speakershouldbeused
fortheleftfront,centerandrightfrontspeakers.This
createsa seamlessfrontseundstageandeliminates
thepossibilityofdistractingsonicdisturbancesthat
occurwhenasoundmovesacrossmismatched
frontchannelspeakers.
Speaker Placement
Dependingonthetypeofcenterchannelspeakerin
useandyourviewingdevice,placethecenterspeaker
eitherdirectlyaboveorbelowyourTV,or inthecenter
behindapetioratedfrontprojectionscreen.
Oncethecenterchannelspeakerisinstalled,position
thel_ontleftandfrontrightspeakersso thattheyare
astar awayfromoneanotherasthecenterchannel
speakerisfromthepreferredlisteningposit_on,ideally,
the%ntchannelspeakersshouldbeplacedsothat

Dependingonthespecificsofyourroomacoustics
andthetypeofspeakersinuse,youmayfindthat
imagingisimprovedbymovingtheleftfrontandright
frontspeakersslightlyforwardofthecenterchannel
speaker,Ifpossible,adjustallfrontloudspeakers
sothattheyareaimedatearheightwhenyouare
seatedin thelisteningposition.
Usingtheseguidelines,you'llfindthatittakessome
experimentationtofindthecorrectlocationforthefront
speakersinyourparticularinstallation.Don'tbealmidto
movethingsarounduntilthesystemsoundscorrect.
Optimizeyourspeakerssothataudiotransitionsacross
thefrontoftheroomsoundsmooth,andsoundsfrom
allspeakersappeartoarriveatthelisteningpositionat
thesametime(withoutdelayfromthecenterspeaker
comparedtotheleftandrightspeakers).
WhentheAVR335 isusedin5.1 channeloperation,
thepreferredlocationforsurroundspeakeraisonthe
sidewailsofthe room,atorslightlybehindthelisten
ingposition,ina 7.1 channelsystem,bothsidesur

undesirablestrainonthesurroundbackamplifiercir
cursandpowersupplies.
Subwoefersproducenondirectionalsound,sothey
maybe placedalmostanywhereina room.Actual
placementshouldbebasedonroomsizeandshape
andthetypeofsubweoferused.Onemethodoffind-
ingtheoptimallocationfora subweoferistobeginby
placingit inthefrontoftheroom,aboutsixinches
fromawall,or nearthefrontcorneroftheroom.
Anothermethodisto temporarilyplacethesubweofer
atyournormallisteningposition,andthenwalk
aroundthe roomuntilyoufinda spotwherethesub
woofersoundsbest.Placethesubweoferinthatspot.
Youshouldalsofollowtheinstructionsofthesub
woofer'smanufacturer,or youmaywishto experi

Oncethespeakershavebeenplacedinthe roomand

levelsforeachinputsource.Thisflexibilityenablesyou
tocustomizethewayinwhichyoulistentoeach
sourceandhavetheAVR335 memorizethoseset
tings.Thismeans,forexample,thatyoumayusedif-
ferentoutputlevelsortrimsfordifferentsources,or
setdifferentspeakerconfigurationswiththeresultant
changestothebassmanagementsystem.Oncethese
settingsammade.theywillautomaficaflyberecalled
wheneveryouselectthatinput.
However.we recommendthatthefirsttimeyouuse
theA\/R335.youtakeadvantageofthesimplicityof
configuringthesystemusingtheEzSet+process.

Beforeusingtheunit.youwillprobablywantto
changethesetl]ngsformostinputssothattheyare

TheAVR335 isoneof thefirstreceiversinitsclassto
offerautomatedspeakersetupandsystemcalibration.
Thisprocessgreatlysimplifiestheinstallationofyour
newreceiverby usingaseriesoftestsignalsand
thepowerofanadvanceddigitalsignalprocessing
systemtoeliminatetheneedformanualadjustment
ofspeaker"size".crossover,delayandoutputlevel
settings.WithEzSet÷yournewreceiverevenalerts
youtoerrorsin speakerconnectionsthatpreventa
speakertromfunctioning.
WithEzSet÷youareabletocalibrateyoursystemina
flactionofthetimeitwouldtaketoenterthesettings
manually,andwithresultsthatrivalthoseachievedwith
expensivetestequipmentandtimeconsumingproce
dures.Theendresultisasystemcalibrationprofile
thatenablesyournewreceivertodeliverthebestpos
siblesound,nomatterwhattypeofspeakersyouhave
orwhatthedimensionsofyourlisteningroomare.
Werecommendthatyoutakeadvantageofthepreci
sionof EzSet÷tocalibrateyoursystem,butif desired
youmayalsomakeanyoftheconfigurafionsettings
manually,ortrimthesettingsprovidedby EzSet÷by
followingtheinstructionsonpages22 through26.
IfyouwishtoconfigureyourAVRmanually,or iffor
somereasonyourEzSet÷microphoneisunavailable,
youmaystilldoso byfollowingtheinstructionson
pages22through26.
Step1: EzSet÷requiresthatyourlisteningroomhave
aslittlebackgroundnoiseas possibletoavoidinte_ier-
ingwiththemeasurementoftonesproducedbyyour
AVRduringthesetupprocedure.Turnoffallloudfans,
airconditionersandotherequipment,andtrytoavoid
makinganynoiseduringtheprocess.
Step2: TheEzSet÷microphoneshouldbeplacedin
eitheryourusuallisteningpositionoT,if thereisalarge
seatingarea,thecenteroftheroom,atthelisteners'
earlevel.Youmayfindit convenienttousea camera
tripodforstableplacementoftheEzSet÷microphone
atthecorrectheight.Themicrophoneincludesa
threadedinsertonthebottomfor tripodmounfi%.
Step3: PlugtheEzSet+microphoneintothe
AVR335'sHeadphoneJack I_J,makingcertain
thatthemini-plugto1/4" phoneplugadaptorsup
pliedwiththemicrophoneisfirmlyconnected.The
microphonecableisapproximately20 feetlong.
whichshouldaccommodatemostlisteningroomsitua
tions.Ifrequired,youmayuseanoplonalextension
cable,availableatmostelectronicsstores,for usein
largerrooms.However,werecommendthatyouavoid
usingextensioncordsforthemicrophonecable,as

Step4: Oncethemicrophoneisproperlypositioned
andpluggedin.proceedtotheEzSet+menusby
firstpressingtheOSDButton_ to bringthe
MAST ER MENU tothescreen.Next.pressthe
A/V NavigationButtons_ tomovetheon-
screencursortothe Ez Se t + menuline.Press
theSetButton_ to moveto thenextscreen
