Installation Checklist
Installation of the SuperLine 6040 Wall Jack Filter consists of the following steps:
-
Disconnect the customer premises wiring from the local loop.
-
Determine whether wall jacks are wired in series or individually.
-
Replace wall jacks with SuperLine 6040 Wall Jack Filters as required.
-
Install new wiring (2-wire system) or a 2-line splitter (4-wire system) for the
SuperLine IAD.
-
If the customer premises has four wires, join the two pairs at the NID.
-
Reconnect the customer premises wiring to the local loop.
Procedures for each step are on the following pages.

Installation
1. Disconnect the Line
At the NID (Network Interface Device) or first accessible entry point, disconnect the
customer premises wiring from the local loop.
!
WARNING:
Do not continue unless the line has been disconnected. Refer to
Important Safety Instructions,
page 13.
2. Determine Wiring Arrangement
Use a tone generator or continuity tester to determine whether wall jacks are wired in a
series or star configuration.
H If wall jacks are wired in series, trace the wiring and use the tone generator or
continuity tester to determine which is the first wall jack wired to the line’s
origination at the NID or other entry point. You must replace that wall jack with a
Wall Jack Filter.
H If some or all wall jacks are wired in a star configuration (that is, more than one wall
jack is wired directly to the NID or other entry point), you must replace every such
wall jack.
Use the following table to select the proper procedures for installation.

* Replace the wall jack nearest the NID with a Wall Jack Filter. If the SuperLine IAD
will not be used at that location, treat the Wall Jack Filter as a NID and run new
(unfiltered) wiring for the SuperLine IAD from the filter input connections.
6
3A. Replace the Wall Jack with a Filter – NID Accessible
If the NID is not accessible, or the customer premises configuration is a 2-wire star,
proceed to
Replace the Wall Jack with a Filter – NID Not Accessible, or 2-Wire
on
page 8.
Use the following procedure to install a SuperLine 6040 Wall Jack Filter when the NID is
accessible. When this procedure is complete, filtering is provided on Pins 3 and 4 and
SuperLine service is provided on Pins 2 and 5 of all wall jacks.
" Procedure
1. Remove the existing wall jack and disconnect the wires from it. Note which wire
bundle runs to the NID and which one runs to the next wall jack.
2. If the wire ends are damaged, clip off the damaged portion. Strip the wires to
expose 1/4I of bare copper.
3. Remove the four screws from the faceplate of the filter and set aside the faceplate.
4. Connect the wires to the screw terminals on the filter assembly:

4A. Prepare a Wall Jack for the SuperLine IAD – 2-Wire
Preparation for the SuperLine IAD depends on whether the customer premises is wired
with two wires or four.
Use the following procedure to prepare a wall jack for the SuperLine IAD in a 2-wire
configuration.
" Procedure
1. Determine where the customer wants the SuperLine IAD installed.
2. Run new wiring from the NID or other entry point to the point where the SuperLine
IAD will be located.
3. Install a standard wall jack and connect the new wiring to the Pin 3 and Pin 4
positions.
4. Use the phone cord supplied with the SuperLine IAD to connect the LINE jack of
the SuperLine IAD to the new wall jack. No 2-line splitter is required for this type of
installation.

Important Safety Instructions
1. Read and follow all warning notices and instructions marked on the product or
included in the manual.
2. This product is intended to be connected to Listed/Certified telephone wiring with a
minimum of 24 AWG (.5 mm) behind a Listed/Certified primary protector.
3. Do not attempt to install or service this product yourself, as opening or removing
covers may expose you to dangerous high-voltage points or other risks. Refer all
installation and servicing to qualified service personnel.
4. When installed in the final configuration, the product must comply with the
applicable Safety Standards and regulatory requirements of the country in which it
is installed. If necessary, consult with the appropriate regulatory agencies and
inspection authorities to ensure compliance.
5. In addition, since the equipment is to be used with telecommunications circuits,
take the following precautions:
Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.
Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the jack is specifically
designed for wet locations.
Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone
line has been disconnected at the network interface.
Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines.
Avoid using a telephone (other than a cordless type) during an electrical storm.
There may be a remote risk of electric shock from lightning.
Do not use the telephone to report a gas leak in the vicinity of the leak.
Notice to Users of the Telephone Network
This equipment complies with Part 68 of the FCC rules. On the inside of the wall plate is
a label that contains, among other information, the FCC registration number and ringer
equivalence number (REN) for this equipment. If requested, this information must be
provided to the telephone company.
This equipment is intended to be hard wired to the telephone line’s primary protector
and to the inside building wiring. The 6-position modular wall jack is designed to be
connected to compatible modular plugs which are Part 68 compliant.
The REN is used to determine the quantity of devices which may be connected to the
telephone line. Excessive RENs on the telephone line may result in the devices not
ringing in response to an incoming call. In most, but not all areas, the sum of RENs
should not exceed five (5.0). To be certain of the number of devices that may be
connected to a line, as determined by the total RENs, contact the local telephone
company.
14
If the Wall Jack Filter causes harm to the telephone network, the telephone company
will notify you in advance that temporary discontinuance of service may be required. But
if advance notice is not practical, the telephone company will notify the customer as
soon as possible. Also, you will be advised of your right to file a complaint with the FCC
if you believe it is necessary.
The telephone company may make changes in its facilities, equipment, operations or
procedures that could affect the operation of the equipment. If this happens, the
telephone company will provide advance notice in order for you to make necessary
modifications to maintain uninterrupted service.
If trouble is experienced with the Telephone Line Filter, for repair or warranty
information, please refer to
Warranty, Sales, Service, and Training Information
.
No repairs may be performed by the end user.
The equipment can not be used on public coin phone service provided by the
telephone company. Connection to party line service is subject to state tariffs. Contact
the state public utility commission, public service commission or corporation
commission for information.
