“Panasonic launches the UK's first HD
televisions with freesat HD built-in”
Panasonic are delighted to be supporting the launch of freesat which marks a
major landmark in the development of Digital Television broadcasting in the UK
Q. What is Freesat?
A. Freesat is a brand new digital satellite TV service brought to you by the
BBC and ITV. Freesat Launches in May 2008 and offers 80 + channels
(ramping up to over 200 channels) providing high definition programmes
and enhanced interactivity, completely free of charge. There is No contract,
No Subscription and No hidden charges. You pay for the equipment and
installation, that’s it, there are no further payments to make.
Q. How does it compare to Freeview?
A. Freeview is a digital terrestrial service (received via a TV aerial) with a
limited bandwidth. Unfortunately there is not enough channel space for
Freeview to broadcast in high definition. Freesat however includes full HD
programmes that are provided free of charge. Because of Freeview’s
limited bandwidth, plans to expand the number of channels are limited.
Freesat as the name suggests, uses satellite broadcasts which has far
more scope for expandability, to add new channels and grow the service in
the future
Many Consumers in the UK have invested in new HD Ready and Full HD
televisions but many of them are still not receiving and watching High Definition
programmes.

Q. How does Freesat compare to Sky or Virgin Media?
A. Freesat is not intended to compete with Sky TV. The concept of Freesat is
that the services are completely free with no contracts and no subscription
charges. Sky, Sky HD and Virgin Media services offer premium packaged
programmes on a subscription basis over a contracted period. Many
customers will want to continue their subscription to Sky or Virgin Media in
order to receive the movies and sports packages offered by these
providers.
Q. What channels will I receive on Freesat?
A. Freesat are planning to launch with over 80 TV and radio channels but
new channels are being added every month. Most Freesat products have
the ability to automatically update with the latest channels and services.

Q. I can’t receive Freeview. Will I be able to receive Freesat?
A. Freesat uses satellite technology so you can receive the signal from a
satellite dish in almost every home in the UK. There may be restrictions in
mounting a satellite dish in some circumstances such as rented properties,
listed buildings etc. Please consult the property owner/ the local authorities
if you have concerns.
Q. What equipment will I need to receive Freesat?
A. You will need to purchase either a set-top-box or a TV with a built in
freesat tuner. Panasonic are the first to launch a range of integrated flat
panel TVs with freesat built in. The first models to be released are TH-
46PZ81 and TH-42PZ81 with TH-50PZ81 to follow soon after. Further
models are expected later in 2008. For more information please see our

Q. What are the differences between using a set top box and an Integrated
Freesat TV?
A. The advantage of using a set-top-box receiver is that it can be added at
any time to an existing TV. The advantages of an integrated freesat TV
are that there is no additional box to find a space for, it’s all built in the TV
and only one remote control is necessary. You don’t need to provide
another mains socket for a box receiver. There are also no messy cables
to connect. Simple!

Q. How do I arrange installation and how much extra will it cost?
A. Installation is arranged at the time of purchase and the one off installation
fee is included in the price paid in the shop. Only freesat approved
installers are used to install and set-up the equipment. There are no
additional costs to pay the installer.
Q. What if I already have a satellite dish fitted at my home.
A. It may be possible to use an existing dish.
The installer will check the existing dish at the time of installation and
make any alignment adjustments that may be necessary

Q. Where can I buy an integrated Freesat TV?
A. Panasonic are launching our first models to the UK market in June 2008
They will be available through: xxxxxxxxxxxx, xxxxxxxxxxxxx,
xxxxxxxxxxxxx, xxxxxxxxxxxx, and many on our independent dealers.
Q. How will the Digital Switchover affect Freesat viewers?
A. Starting in 2008 and concluding in 2012, UK TV services will go
completely digital, region by region. This process is called digital
switchover. The UK’s old analogue TV broadcast signals are being
switched off and replaced by digital signals. TVs that have not been
adapted to receive digital broadcasts when the digital switchover takes
place will no longer be able to receive TV programmes. Freesat is an
ideal way to receive digital TV as the broadcast is digital right from the
launch.

Connect the recorder to the TV
using a fully wired SCART
connector for recording from the
TV tuner.
It is not possible to record from

The Ethernet cable is required for
future interactive services and
needs to be connected when using
these services. Ensure that the
cable is plugged into both the TV

The weak signal can be caused for
a number of reasons:
Check your postcode area is able to
receive Freeview broadcasts at
www.freeview.co.uk
You may need a new aerial to
successfully receive Freeview
broadcasts in your area. Please
consult your local Aerial Installation
engineer. Approved engineers can
be found on the CAI website
www.cai.org.uk
Freeview programmes are being
broadcast at a reduced power to
prevent interference with analogue
stations also being transmitted. The
signal strength is not likely to be
increased until the analogue
transmitters are switched off over
the next few years. The plan is for
the broadcasters to cease
transmitting analogue programmes
by 2012..
Weather conditions will affect signal
reception, in particular in poorer
reception areas. Even during good
weather the high pressure can
cause poor reception of some
programmes
The most likely cause for all or
some of these problems is a
weak signal.
Freezing Picture/Sound,
images disappear, mosaic
areas appear on the screen
when receiving digital
broadcast programmes

represent a malfunction.
The TV will switch to standby
after 30 minutes if no signal is
received.

and press OK. Please note that this
setting cannot be stored. The
language will reset if the TV is
switched off.

broadcasts because of the
way that they are being
transmitted, do not switch the
language to English even

Entering your Post Code
Why is it necessary to enter a Post Code when setting up a
Freesat TV?
When installing a freesat TV and running the Auto-Setup you will be
prompted to enter a post code.
The post code is used to indentify where in the UK you are located
and to select the correct “Local” TV programmes for your area. The
correct Local News and Local Weather programmes etc can then be
watched on the BBC and ITV.
If this step is skipped during the set-up process, the default location
of Central London will be set and Local News and Weather
broadcasts etc will be London based. The post code can be added
or changed later.
When entering your post code you must include the space in the
characters entered, for example: - the post code RG128FP should
be entered as RG12 8FP (with the space between the 12 and the 8).

How does the software update process differ from that of
Freeview?
The main difference is that Panasonic Freeview equipment uses the Over the
Air Download system (OAD) whereas the Freeview TV uses the newer System
Software Update (SSU) system.
The OAD system, once the software update has been approved by DTG, it is
sent to the BBC to download on the next available slot that the manufacturer
has allocated. This could be weeks after the software has been approved.
With SSU, a channel is permanently allocated for system updates, so once the
software has been approved for release, it can be sent to the required
equipment almost immediately, without queuing for weeks.
